Ernest Smyser Hagen was born in New Dorp, Staten Island, New York. His father was the well-known Moravian minister and composer Francis Florentine Hagen (1815-1907) and his mother was Ellen Smyser. E. S. Hagen had two brothers: Harry R., and William T., and six half-siblings: Susan F., Miriam, Felix F., Samuel E., Francis B., and John C. Ernest Hagen was educated at the Nazareth Hall Military Academy and then at Moravian College and Theological Seminary. He was ordained a deacon on December 29, 1889, and consecrated as a presbyter on May 28, 1893. Hagen served as a teacher at the Nazareth Hall Military Academy for one year and then became pastor at Stapleton, New York. Following that post, he served successively as pastor in Lebanon, York, Lititz, Pennsylvania; and New Dorp, Staten Island, New York. On October 9, 1924, he was elected President of the Eastern District and not long after became a member in the Provincial Elders Conference. He retired in 1930 because of health problems and lived in Bethlehem before later moving to Lititz where he lived until his death in 1956. During his career Hagen also served as a delegate to the General Synod of 1909 held in Herrnhut, Germany. He was also one of the leaders in establishing the Larger Life Foundation and served as “Advocate” for thirty-one years. Hagen also served as secretary of the Pennsylvania Chatauqua in 1895. E.S. Hagen was married to J. Louise (Copper) who died in 1937. They had four children: two sons and two daughters.
