The collection contains four notebooks dating from 1838 until 1843. The notebooks are school notebooks that discuss mathematics, measuring, and some financial calculations.


Josiah Transue was born October 15th, 1825, in Northampton Township in Bucks County. His parents were John and Susannah Transue. Growing up Josiah attended school in Northampton, and also learned the trade of cabinet making. Josiah Transue was baptized and confirmed in the Reformed Church, later when Josiah moved to Bethlehem he was received into the Moravian Church. On October 17th, 1850, Josiah was married to Sarah Lizetta Criss, born near Emmaus. From 1864 to 1884 they were janitors of the (Central) Moravian Church at Bethlehem. In 1884 they moved to First Avenue at which point Josiah retired from an active life. In 1896 he suffered from poor health, and then in January of 1897 he was faced with a severe illness which lead to his passing on February 1, 1897. He was survived by his daughter Emma, and wife Sarah.
