thursday july 24 1952 bethlehem pennsylvania give blood on time asks arc promptness in keeping red cross blood program appoint ments next wednesday is urged for the 250 pledged donors from the bethlehem area by miss eliza beth wharen executive secretary of the bethlehem chapter of the american red cross included among the pledges are eight members of the lehigh staff and seven student donations have been schedul ed from 11 a.m to 4:30 p.m at nativity church fourth and wy andotte sts a philadelphia blood mobile unit will be on hand to examine volunteers and accept donations the complete time for 1 each donor will be approximate ly one hour miss wharen also urges that donors remember the special in although fall practice doesn't start until august 22 at steel field head coach built afrotc summer camp sees fire power demo lehich university's annual alumni fund will probably be among the top fifteen in the coun try this year stewart j cort chairman of the fund committee said today in announcing that lehigh had set a new record for annual giving with 2,198 contri butors giving 151,348 to the 1951-52 alumni fund mr cort a vice president of the bethlehem steel co and a member of the board of trustees also predicted that the lehigh alumni fund may be among the first five in the size of average gift this year in addition to top ping its objective of 150,000 this year's fund increased the total amount given last year by tiff per cent and the number of gfv ers 54 per cent over last year when the 1950-51 fund realised 1,426 gifts totaling 73,059 proceeds of the campaign are being used for the complete modernization of taylor dormi tory which was built in 1906 through a gift from andrew car negie the fund is the medium through which alumni may make annual contributions to the uni versity and is part of the general fund raising efforts of lehigh other committees are promoting bequests and seeking gifts from business and industry and next fall a committee of parents will be organized to help raise addi tional funds other gifis and bequests to le high during the year totaled 291,720 making a grand total of 443,0668 received by the uni versity most of the additional funds are for scholarships and en alums set record with 151,348 clinic to open for summer like a rock ... see camp page 3 by bill decamp the four weeks afrotc summer camp at robins air force base consisted of a glorified tour of the base said jerry hanks 53 a student in the advanced course who returned last week known as the warner robins air material area the base is lo cated 18 miles south of macon ga hanks said 14,000 civilians and about 4,000 air fore person nel are employed in the area which covers 35 square miles and makes up the largest single busi ness in georgia the purpose of the camp train ing was to acquaint advanced students with air force life show ihem how a base functions and show them what is done hanks said students were shown how planes brought in for repair are competely dismantled leaving just the barest shell every con ceivable piece is taken out re built and then replaced hanks observed he said ihey toured many of the industrial shops in the huge supply and mainte nance area to watch how the jobs were done most of the planes were b^29's and f-84's he said highlight of the four weeks was a trip by plane the only one we had to eglin field fla where we saw an aerial fire power de monstration hanks said live ammunition was used in all the weapons including machine guns rockets and bombs they drop ped almost everything they had except the atom bomb see clinic page 2 we were approximately 1500 yards away when they bombed and shot at mock targets consist ing of trains buildings truck convoys and three old world war ii airplanes hanks noted the climax of the show dame when a b-17 dropped its capacity load of twelve 500-pound bombs follow ed by a b-36 that also dropped its capacity load — 132 500-pound bombs the demonstration cost several millions of dollars they were told including transportation of observers of the 200 cadets 20 were le high men recreation at the base was swimming and basketball of which they enjoyed about six to eight hours a week hanks point ed out that the only time the men weren't confined to the basi twenty college men and women from five states will be gin work in the first of two sum mer sessions of the reading and study clinic at lehigh next mon day both programs will run through august 29 with the sec ond program opening august 11 in addition to lehigh students the classes will include men and women from such schools as skid more wellesley franklin and marshall princeton yale and cornell the five week course which opens monday offers intensive training in language skill im provement for students weak in the language arts this course in fundamental reading and writing skills will provide remedial in struction in spelling language usage word perception vocabu lary growth and comprehension the three week reading and study program which will be given for the third year starting aug 11 offers training in faster and more efficient reading a sound system of study greater word power and techniques of skimming outlining summariz ing notetaking remembering concentration listening and scheduling of study time during the course students may become acquainted with their own interests personality skills and aptitudes through an intensive testing and counseling weatherman in a but if anybody has any perspir ation left it will continue to flow freely this weekend as the weath er man predicts hot humid air with only a slight possibility of thunder showers to cool us off the high and low temperatures for the past week follow john cox ch.e 56
