sen mundt old clothing drive starts next week ing and shipping of the clothing to the warehouse of the united breth en church in windsor md will be in chaige of alpha phi omega the national service fra ternity dorm bars impossible congdon efforts to improve lehigh's social program for residence halls were announced recently by the office of the dean of students in a letter to brown and white in answer to the editorial stop the exodus of april 25 dean wray h congdon promised as sistance to idc in ameliorating what b&w called the university's greatest social problem however the placing of bars in dormitories will not be one of the solutions according to the dean there are to be no bars in resi dence halls he wrote he cited the legal personal and social considerations which would make any such movement impossible and unwise moreover he added the tempta see full text page 7 j photos of the unidentified threatening letter and envelope sent to brown and white friday concerning the poster thefts let ter and envelope have been placed in hands of a fingerprint expert for possible tracing note fingerprints alumnus leaves most of estate to sigma phi's > nathan hale 97 an alum nus of sigma phi died two weeks ago and left the sigma phi house the bulk of his 20,000 estate hale worked wlh several rail roads after he graduated from le high but he always found enough time to remain an integral part of his chapter house he i spent a great deal of time touring ! the country before the building of the new sigma phi house and in | that way was responsible for a major part of the fund raising for the new home lehigh songs on sale now the records of lehigh songs have finally arrived on campus recorded during february and march in packer chapel they are 12 inch 33 1/3 long-playing mi crogrooves priced at 4.50 on campus or 5 postpaid to any place in the u.s they may be obtained at the ar cadia office the music dept of fice or at the booth outside the library with arcadia close to solving the mystery o the snatched posters on ihe basis of two lips by informants seeking ihe 50 reward a sensational development took place friday when the brown and white received the threatening letter reproduced opposite the letter addressed merely to the brown and white by means of a clipped flag scotch-taped to a plain business envelope is believed by the editors of the b&w to be a threat designed to intimidate an editor who himself had been approached by a tipsier offering to bargain with the b&w this informer agreed to reveal the names of the vandals exclusively to the b&w in exchange for a guar i antee of a maximum punishment of merely reposting the signs since the b&w was in no po sition to make such a bargain the offer was declined and the in formant advised to disclose his information through the proper channels the student who said he was not interested in the re ward declared that he felt the punishment meted out by the ar cadia discipline committee would be too severe and declined the advice the sender of the threatening letter apparently believed that the names of the culprits had been revealed to the b&w brown and white editors at first believed the letter to be a practi cal joke but after receiving two anonymous phone oalls of an abusive and profane nature re trieved the missive from the cir cular file upon inspection it was noted that many clear fairly dis tinguishable fingerprints could be discerned on the scotch tape used to affix the clipped letters and phrases to the paper accordingly the b&w has placed the letter in the hands of fingerprint experts and the infor mation thus obtained will be checked against all available fin gerprint files subsequent to this develop ment the b&w was told by an arcadia member who prefers that his identity remain a secret that two informers had come forward these men are supposed to have disclosed the following 1 that the vandals were dormitory men from taylor 2 that as many as four may have been involved scl bonus to offer mundt-sparkman fray plans are now being formu lated for conducting a campus old clothing drive as a part of the service accorded by the cam pus chest program to get under way the beginning of next week mark kaufman n campus chest co-chairman announced satur day old clothes of all varieties and types are being sought for ship ment to students in need over seas through the world student service fund tuesday and wed nesday may 20 and 21 have been scheduled as the collection dates on the campus the clothes should be deposited in the dorm sections and fraternity houses on these days boxes will be set up for collec tion of clothing from town men and faculty members in the top floor of drown hall and the first floor of christmas-saucon hall all clothing should be clean since soiled or dirty clothing will mold during overseas shipment and thereby be rendered useless a pick-up motorcade will make the rounds of the fraternities and dormitory sections on thursday may 22 sponsored by the inter fraternity council as a phase of its public service work packag sen sparkman a debate o:i 1952 presidential campaign issues between sen karl mundt republican south dakota and sen john sparkman democrat alabama will close the lehigh concerts-lectures ser ies for the academic year at 8 p.m friday in grace hall this program has been added to the series as a bonus attrac tion for season ticket holders all undergraduates will be admitted without charge upon presentation of their id cards at the door tick ets for faculty members and stu dents guests are now on sale at the registrar's office at 50 cents each the subject of the debate will be resolved that there should be a change in our national ad 1 see debate page 8 brown and white tuesday may 13 1952 volume 63 — number 48 solons hot on vandals crank threatens b & w lehigh university bethlehem pa
