bethlehem pa lu's conference on religion opens volume 63 — number 33 sion dr samuel shoemaker pres ident of the standing committee of the episcopal church of the diocese of new york and two catholic clergymen from the mary immaculate seminary in northampton since protestant students comprise the largest single group of lehigh men the most far-reach ing program has been planned by the christian council twelve ma jor events have been scheduled by this group including platform addresses informal panel discus sions a program of interdenomi see faiths page 8 plan to ban frosh cars voted by idc tonight the most ambitious religious program in lehigh's his tory opens the second confer ence on religion will be sponsor ed again by the three major reli gious organizations on the cam pus the hillel society the new man club and the christian coun cil these groups representing jewish catholic and protestant students respectively have plan ned separate programs but all three will culminate in a service featuring religious music wed nesday night for the student who is interest ed in finding out more about his own religion or the religions of others the sponsoring groups have outlined a widely varied schedule which includes many kinds of services there will be very solemn religious gatherings but there will also be such activities as in formal bull sessions in dorms and fraternities allowance is made for all degrees of religious convic tion — from the most convinced believer to the strongest doubt er the speakers too will be men of high capability among them will be such people as rabbi am ram prero national director of the american zionist youth commis members of the interdormi tory council took a definite ac tion on the matter of freshman cars on campus at their monthly meeting last tuesday evening at this time idc recommended to the administration that fresh man cars should be banned from the campus during the fall semes ter with the stipulation that freshmen may bring their cars during the spring semester if they attain at least a 2.00 average this decision has been reach ed after a careful consideration of all the facts commented idc sec retary sam johnson 53 we have talked with many freshmen and a large majority of them agree with our views idc has considered all possible solutions to the dormitory parking problem and we believe this is the only solution which would solve our problem johnson added speaking to the contrary arcadia representative art gold enberg 53 commented i don't think the banning of freshman see ifc page 3 lehigh students will be given a chance to register their opin ions on the national presidential asphants during the campus-wide elections on april 1 and 2 voters will be able to choose from the leaders of both major par ties since a maximum list of the names of 10 prominent contenders will be presented the election will be sponsored and conducted by the political science assembly campus government club arcadia gave its appro val to the project on wednesday evening the major reason for the voting besides serving the general campus interest is to provide psa with definite information regarding the presidential preference of lehigh undergraduates these choices will serve to instruct the lehigh delegation to the intercollegiate conference on government which will hold a model presidential nominating convention in harrisburg april 24 to 26 the icg is a state-wide orgaization of college and university stu dents who each year conduct some model form of political assembly similar ballots will be sent to faculty members during the election period faculty members will thus be able to participate or not as they choose the returns of the facuty ballots will be tallied separ ately and will not affect the student selections candidates are nominated by petition only persons who arc constitutionally eligible will be entered on the ballot persons wish ing to circulate petitions on behalf of their favorite candidates can obtain these petitions from miss shirley whalen department of his tory and government coppee hall any duly enrolled student may sign a nominating petition already some students have begun activity on behalf of their candidates announcement of the various campaign clubs will be made from time to time persons interested in forming new campaign clubs or joining existing clubs should contact william p thompson 52 chairman of psa's presidential election project leo j rooney r 52 is president of psa and george howatt is faculty advisor the preferential type ballot employed in lehigh class elec tions will be used to conduct the voting when notification of this development was made bruce hill 52 withdrew his support of ad lai stevens as a candidate and joined with many other men support ing candidates who weie out of favor with the plan the basis for their disagreement stems from the fact that it will produce results unlikely to reflect a true spirit since the national elections aie not held in this manner called the alternative vote system of majority preferential voting this system holds the special advantage of assuring a majority choice regardless of the number of nominees thus the voting will simulate on a written ballot the process of successive re-balloting which is carried on at the national party nominating conventions without this preferential ballot the elec tion results would be indecisive that is although various candi dates would receive differing percentages of the votes cast there would be little likelihood of a clear-cut majority winner a definite majority winner will be inevitable with the preferential ballot to be used ballot boxes will be placed at convenient campus locations and will be manned by psa members from 9 to 4 voters will need to register as in other campus elections in order to receive a ballot arcadia meeting discusses health 51 campus chest a suggestion from a member of the student body at the first joint meeting of the new and old arcadia wednesday night got the student council off to a good start in their endeavors to repre sent the lehigh man boyd goldwyn 54 recom mended a four point plan to be considered by arcadia as an ini tial basis to improve the health service commenting that he does not want to be a one man com mittee for the betterment of the lehigh health service goldwyn threw his plan to the council ex plaining that he feels arcadia is the logical body to handle the matter his plan called for 1 examina j tion of each student who enters the health service by the doctor in charge and not as he claims has happened merely by the nurse 2 a special room for cold sufferers instead of exposing those students suffering from other ail ments to the cold infections 3 attempt to be made to pur chase a car for the express use of the doctor in charge to answer emergency calls in the dormitory as in the case of a student being in no condition to walk down for treatment 4 a 24 hour health 1 service i the council approved gold wyn's suggestion and appointed a three man committee to investi gate the problem in another action taken after the welcome by dean wray h cong don and the taking of the oath administered by chaplain george ißean arcadia granted the old president the power to break a tie should the occasion arise un til a new president is
