after friday's debating ses sion everything looked rosy for tiny wilkes college of wilkes barre its teams had won six out i of six and were a cinch to go into j the semi-finals no matter what ! happened in the two remaining battles the next day then came the three-inch snow fall and the commuting wilkes debaters couldn't get back to bethlehem saturday morning they were disqualified scran ton's commuting team not in the running made it easily from about the same distance quo vadis by hal kelly yellow jack — the dra matic saga of man's search for medical knowledge was m&c's excellent production last friday and saturday in broughal high school sidney howard's version of the real-life drama of drs walter reed carlos finlay jesse lazear and james carroll and their work against yellow fever in cuba dur ing the year 1900 was played to | a moderately-sized but apprecia tive audience as well as being a story of sci entific discovery and conquest the play also revealed the unsci entific method and poor work manship often found in the work j of men of science it revealed the ! lack of precision and machine like thoroughness sometimes found — in short it revealed the human element yellow jack told of the work of carlos finlay the cuban doctor who 19 years before wal see yellow jack page 3 there are some things we em pirically know with certainty dr calvin d rollins assistant profes sor of philosophy at wesleyan university told the blake society thursday night speaking on the foundations of knowledge rollins attacked the theory that we can be certain of the reality of none of our sen sory experiences since all such experiences are of the same na tuie and it has been demonstrat < ed in some cases that our senses deceive us can you doubt that this is a i hand he asked showing his hand to the audience he claimed that the common usage of the word reality has definite limita tions and that within these limita tions we can know things with certainty the philosophers have changed the definition of reality in attempting to show that we cannot know it he said objecting to the claim that all sensory experiences are of the same nature rollins said the terms certain and uncertain refer to man's common sense em pirical knowledge lehigh's second conference on religion will open friday eve ning at 8 p.m at the b'rith sholom community center this first pro gram will be sponsored by the hillel society the undergraduate organization of jewish students speakers at the meeting will be chaplain bean and louis sand president of the interfaith coun cil the subject under discussion will be why a conference on religion four other major activities will be sponsored by the hillel society during the conference saturday morning there will be regular sabbath services at the commu nity center led by rabbi tzvi h poiath rabbi porath will be j available throughout the confer ence for personal consultation at the community center sunday afternoon there will be an informal discussion at the community center about the problems of jewish youth to day carl zimmerman 53 mon roe korn 54 and harris fuller 55 will participate purim services will be held monday evening at 7 p.m at the community center the purpose of the meeting will be the read ing of the megillah rabbi amram prero national director of the american zionist youth commission will speak tuesday night at the community center the topic of his talk will be what religion can mean in the lives of young people commenting on the purpose of the conference as a whole maik kaufmann 53 president of the hillel society said we hope that the conference on religion will not be merely another tradi tion but that it will become an outgrowth of a spontaneous de sire of the student body to delve further into the objects of religi ous thought which are not found in everyday academic life rapt in concentration four freshmen everett vanhoe^an james streeter don williams and bill martin earnestly discuss the important question of which bid to accept as they sit in the drown hall lounge friday afternoon rehearsals and construction are well under way in all sections of the 1952 music festival accord ing to coordinating director will wilbern 52 some units of the show have been in rehearsal more than a month construction of this year's stage which utilizes both conven tional and projected scenery is following a prefabrication plan all the component parts are being fabricated now with much of the work going on in drown hall during the spring vacation the stage crew under the direction of bob gill 53 jim weber 52 and the supervision of prof a a rights will assemble the parts into one massive set on the grace hall bleachers meanwhile the musical and dramatic sections of the festival are rehearsing two and three times a week grace hall has been playing host to the many girls and lehigh men dancing in the show while prof william schempf works with the orchestra glee club and the cast of brigadoon tickets for the festival go on campus sale march 24 the price scale and places of sale have not yet been announced tickets are being offered to lehigh students a full week ahead of the town sale date because according to bill davis 52 ticket manager good seats will be at a premium this year due to the size and situation of the festival stage tuesday march 4 1952 494 pints in 52 drive doubles lu's 51 total lehigh university bethlehem pa volume 63 — number 32 up debaters win tournament prize 52 affirmative team dropped their first to bucknell and then went on to defeat temple alle gheny and st vincent lehigh negative debateis mai gross 54 and elliott barnett 54 won their third round debate over dickinson but dropped the rest to perm state men univ of pittsburgh men carnegie tech allegheny college became a double winner in the oratory and see prize page 6 m & c play superbly performed university of pennsylvania debaters talked their way to top honors in the fifth annual penn sylvania intercollegiate forensic tournament held at lehigh this past weekend perm gained possession of the talon trophy by virtue of a split decision win over st joseph's philadelphia in the final round the other two teams to survive the preliminary rounds were perm state men and university of pittsburgh in each debate in the semi-final and final rounds affir mative teams won thus necessi tating the use of point scores to determine winning schools lehigh's debaters came through with a 500 average win ning four of eight debates bill stafford 52 and paul handwerk hillel to hold religion talks lehigh's second campus blood drive netted the red cross blood program for defense 494 pints thursday and friday — moie than twice the 210 pints do i nated last spring in addition there are still about 100 pledges to be collected an oversubscribed quota creat ed scheduling difficulties and the backlog will be collected march ! 20 on the bloodmobile's next visit j to bethlehem only 36 of the 530 student and [ faculty donors who reported to grace hall where two bloodmo bile units and complete staffs were set up were refused one was rejected because of age and the rest for medical
