bucknell eleven proves powerful price five cents dr c r richards talks to chemical society fall house party is huge success vol xxx no 15 brown and white harriers gain experience in triangular con fair visitors enjoy two day program of festivities over bucknell game swarthmore is victor in rough contest lehigh squad shows excellent teamwork lewisburg collegians defeat brown and white in game featured by penalties a happy frolic score 14-0 score 2-1 results are good fourteen fraternities entertain at sophomore cotillion inter fraternity and college dances coach baldwin's proteges hand icapped by injuries are un able to score the y m c a membership campaign came to a climax thurs day evening at the first presbyteri an church on fourth street when fifty students representing the fra ternities living groups and the stu dents in the various streets of the city ate a sumptuous supper pre pared by the ladies of the church as the meal drew to a close j l lees president of the y m c a introduced professors howard eck feldt b l miller and h r rei ter each of whom gave short spicy talks on the need of student co operation here at lehigh to back up the y m c a then charles a voss 23 the chairman of the cam paign explained the details of the drive and gave to each team of two certain portions of the student body to be canvassed that evening as a result of the meeting the men went out with great enthusiasm on their mission of gathering in new members the result of this effort has been the awakening of the student body to the fact that there is a fine or ganization here on the campus for their especial aid at the close of the week about three hundred stu dents had signed up as members of the lehigh y m c a the cam paign will be continued for several days and no doubt there will be five hundred students enrolled before it is over varsity club elects officers for year last saturday afternoon playing under decided disadvantages the lehigh soccer team lost a league game to swarthmore at swarth more by a score of 2 goals to 1 from the start the brown and white team worked at a disadvan tage the field being rather poor and having a decided slope up which le high had to kick having lost the toss throughout the first half swarthmore pressed this advantage and scored indirectly from a cor ner while lehigh seemed to be un able to bring into play the same type of teamwork that they have heretofore manifested during the second half however the advantage changed sides and although the scoring was even the swarthmore team was slightly outplayed and gradually started a kind of system atic rough-house the score in the first half was somewhat of a break for swarth more michelina gave away a cor ncr and the trial for goal was well blocked by brewer whose kick went directly to the swarthmore center landis scored by a seem ingly unintentional kick continued on page four upon changing goals for the sec ond half lehigh got the down-hill slope and proceeded to show better teamwork fritz mercur passed to fernandez who kicked for lehigh's one tally immediately succeeding this goal the swarthmore team started their plunging tactics near ly 40 fouls were called upon swarth more walters the lehigh outside right was continually knocked off sunday was a gloomy day for those sons of lehigh who enter tained guests at the house parties as they saw the fair ones departing the memory of that week-end will linger with us for some time to come for though the time was short everyone enjoyed themselves to the utmost and nothing was left undone which might afford more pleasure to our charming guests friday afternoon all roads led to bethlehem and every train left a goodly number of happy and ex pectant girls that night drown hall was the scene of the sopho more cotillion and the floor was filled to capacity the hall was at tractively decorated in brown and white streamers and put up a very pretty appearance louis cohen's orchestra of new york furnished the music and their splendid play ing was more than enough to cap the climax and make the party the wonderful success that it was the dance was scheduled to close at 3 o'clock but a collection was taken up and the necessary amount of money was raised to keep the mu sic going until 4 o'clock the freshmen not to be outdone held their dance on friday night at the phi gamma delta house music being furnished by the delta upsi lon orchestra of lafayette the dance was well attended and the music was well above par all of which helped to make the program continued on page three rifle team opens with a victory work of y m.c.a topic of meeting in the triangular meet on satur day with the strong rutgers and lafayette cross-country teams the brown and white harriers finished third with a score of 60 rutgers winning with the low score of 21 and lafayette with a score of 39 and although defeated the lehigh runners were in the race from the start rutgers's course about 5j5 j / 2 miles in length which is an ideal one but both lehigh and lafay ette were caught at a disadvantage when they had no long-spiked shoes since they expected at least half the distance to be road work the course was seven-eighths meadows pasture and park where smooth soled shoes soon became slippery underfoot the fast rutgers team took the lead with the firing of the gun and with the exception of two lafayette men were never headed although the maroon and brown and white teams were close on their heels un til the halfway mark was passed after this they steadily increased their lead 1 , finishing second third fourth fifth and seventh farn ham the lafayette freshman was the first man to finish but he was ahead of powell of rutgers only by inches ; their times being only a fifth of a second apart both pow ell and farnham entered the foot ball field which marked the finish of the race together and it was on ly after one of the hardest-fought sprints ever seen at the finish of a race that he was able to defeat the rutgers captain porter who fin ished 11th was the first lehigh man to cross the line he being about a minute and a half behind the win ner the men finished in the fol lowing charles h miller 23 the president first spoke a few words urging the men pres ent to join the y m c a and then introduced professor john l stewart the first speaker of the evening professor stewart spoke on the change in public attitude towards engineering that has taken place in this country during the last twenty years the money given to found the massachusetts institute of tech nology was first offered to harvard but was refused because science was not thought a fit subject for gentle men to study neither would ox ford and cambridge in england have anything to do with develop ment in chemistry and metallurgy it is up to the engineers of le high and other colleges to make sci ence appreciated in america and have it paid as it should be men of science should sit on board's of directors instead of being merely hired men as a final word of advice pro fessor stev/art urge 1 r er r student to fall in love with scene great man in his field to think what he would have done when things went against him and the joy of work will be ample satisfaction for a life of service at the close of professor stew art's talk mr miller extended the thanks of the society and then in troduced tuminous coal in one-third the time then thought necessary another phase of chemistry which appealed to dr richards is liquid fuel there are few things more neces sary to civilization than the liquid develop pre-medical society to hear prominent dentist highway engineer at next civil meeting the meeting of the newly-organ ized varsity club of lehigh uni versity was held last thursday ev ening in drown hall the main puirpose of the meeting was the election of officers after nomina tions and some discussion the fol lowing men were elected : presi dent l j bray vice-president r m beck 23 secretary e b beale 23 ; treasurer p h hart ung 23 sergeant-at-arms s j bessemer 23 the proposed constitution was read and after considerable discus sion approved the charter mem bership of the club as set forth in the constitution consists of all l letter men whose letter has no sub script this includes all men who have won a letter in the following sports football baseball basket ball lacrosse track and wrestling and all men who have been awarded letters in other sports this mem bership may be added to from time to time at the discretion of the char ter members r m beck 23 and e b beale 23 have been awarded the straight l because of their fine work on the tennis team last year and are therefore members of the varsity club this is an unusual honor and is only given for exceptional work in a minor sport the varsity club is now fully organized and will take a place as one of the leaders of the college ac tivities its membership is made up of many of the most prominent men in lehigh and should exert a powerful influence on all the activi ties of the student body those present at the y m c a meeting last sunday evening had the pleasure of hearing an address by dr richards on the work of the y m c a at lehigh miss gangwere well known in bethle hem as a pianist and vocalist ren dered several selections which met with the approval of those present dr richards opened his address by stating that it is the purpose of every educational institution to de velop the student morally and spirit ually as well as physically and men tally this is the particular field of the v it is impossible for professors and instructors to exer cise the supervision over the men which they received at home or in a preparatory school and some or ganization is needed to in some de giree take the place of this neces sary advice the v also affords a centre of social gathering and pro vides interesting and instructive speakers of unquestionable repute dr richards closed his speech by an earnest appeal for student sup port of the y m c a and ex pressed the hope that the present members would do all in their pow er to improve the moral and spirit ual condition of the student body s g harris general secretary of the v here announced that at the next regular meeting in drown hall a social hour would be held from five until six and a light lunch of chocolate and sandwiches would be served the civil engineering society will hold a meeting on thursday evening in the physics building at 8 o'clock the principal speaker of the evening will be dr w k hatt director of highway research in the national research council dr hatt will take as his subject the outstanding problems of highway research and will illustrate his lecture with slides and motion pic tures two student papers will al so be read f h leister 23 will speak on concrete roads and c r bush will speak on testing of sub-grade soils the subject of highway construc tion is of such great importance at present that every engineer should avail himself of the opportunity to hear such an eminent authority as dr hatt the largest crowd of the season witnessed lehigh go down to de feat at the hands of the bucknell team to the tune of 14 to 0 the clever line work of the lewisburg collegians and the versatile attack of their backs kept lehigh on the defensive the greater part of the afternoon jenkins's long end-runs and dietrich's center-plunges com bined with dayhoff's forward pass ing had lehigh working hard to defend her goal the game was featured by the many off-side pen alties inflicted on lehigh and by nu merous fumbles especially on buck nell's part bucknell's first score came short ly after the play began as a result of a series of off-side penalties which carried the ball to within striking distance of lehigh's goal jenkins carried the ball to the 4 yard line in a long end-run but fumbled dietrich scooped the ball up immediately and carried it over for a tally the point after touch down came as a result of lehigh's being off-side on the play in the second period the power ful bucknell offense started march ing down the field several times but each time a fumble or an inter cepted forward pass gave lehigh the ball and cusick punted out of danger an aerial attack instituted by lehigh also failed to gain much ground the third period was a good deal the same the ball changing hands very often and neither side being able to effect material gains but in the final period lehigh opened up a strong attack which brought the team to bucknell's 20-yard line with a first down lehigh was pen alized 15 yards but this was amply made up for by a beautiful forward pass greer to burke which gained 30 yards this gave lehigh a first down on bucknell's 10-yard line with every chance to score but while morgan was about to throw a forward he was tackled so hard that he lost the ball and julian bucknell's left end raced 85 yards down the field for his team's second score lehigh came back strong for a time but finally lost the ball on downs bucknell then opened up a bewildering overhead attack and was only 6 yards from another touchdown when the final whistle blew first quarter continued on page four bucknell won the toss and mor gan kicked off to walker who was forced out of bounds on the 30 yard ilne cusick punted to die trich who fumbled and recovered on the 28-yard line dietrich made 3 yards through center dayhoff went through center for 2 a for ward pass dayhoff to kopp gain ed 20 yards hoffman was off-side and lehigh was penalized 5 yards kopp got through but the ball was out of bounds lehigh was off-side on the next play and penalized 5 yards making it bucknell's first down kopp went through left the rifle team defeated the strong virginia polytechnic institute team last friday by a score of 494 to 492 this was the first match of the season for our team and augurs well for the future in the first match last year a gainst drexel lehigh made a score of 495 but all of the men on the team had just returned from the national rifle matches at camp perry ohio and were in top form this year however the team was quite evenly divided between the four classes the team is out to beat its best score of last year a 498 against yale the lehigh team shot as fol lows : — regad capt 23 100 robinson e l 24 99 stazinski 25 99 hubbard 25 98 hales 23 98 stauffer 25 98 laux l a 24 98 vanßilliard 23 97 thompson w a 26 .... 97 dancy 26 96 the five high scores on each team counted five places on the team for the vermont match next week will be competed for every after noon of this week on the range in packer hall all old material and new men who can shoot come out and . contribute to making this le high's biggest year in rifle shooting dr walls a graduate of the u of p dental college and at present oral surgeon at st luke's hospi tal will be the speaker at the first regular meeting of the pre-medical society in drown hall on thurs day evening november 16th at 8 o'clock dr walls will speak on the di agnostic end of dentistry or the re lation of dentistry to medicine and will show x-ray pictures of infect ed teeth to illustrate his talk his subject is of great interest to pre medics because as dr mayo of the rochester foundation has said the next step in preventative med icine is dentistry an informal discussion period will follow dr walls's talk and re freshments will be served all pre meds who are genuinely interested in their future profession can not afford to miss this and the meet ings which are to follow brown and white bethlehem pa tuesday friday by a score of 494 to 492 this was the first match of the season for our team and augurs well for the future in the first match last year a gainst drexel lehigh made a score of 495 but all of the men on the team had just returned from the national rifle matches at camp perry ohio and were in top form this year however the team was quite evenly divided between the four classes the team is
