inter-mural race on friday afternoon brown smoker characterized by spicy talks and lively entertainment fernandez showed a brilliant and clever attack scoring three times stonewall line of rhode island collegians three times pre vents a touchdown bethlehem pastor takes as his subject personal habits that help prospects for a championship team are bright with last year's five intact score 6-2 frosh in pajamas score 3-2 eighteen games planned coach baldwin's proteges show ed excellent teamwork but lacked the final punch lehigh's strong defense proved valuable brewer and michelina featured preventing scores the regular sunday evening meet ing of the y m c a was held in drown hall at 6:15 o'clock the meeting which was very interesting came up to the interest of the past ones this was due to the efforts of ' mr harris who secured the serv ice of an old friend rev robin son of this city mr j w taylor who presided at the meeting gave a short address of introduction rev robinson's talk was short but to the minute on the topic personal habits that help he enumerated several hab its which would lessen and help us fear the knocks in life among some of these habits are cleanliness thoroughness promptness and god liness he pointed out that good could be the only outcome of going to church and praying mr harris gave a short talk an nouncing that dr estes president of the bethlehem rotary club would be the speaker next week this meeting will be unusually in teresting and it is hoped a good number will be in attendance af ter a fine musical program rev robinson the meeting to a close with a prayer st paul's society has good plan the prospects for basketball at lehigh this year appear to be very bright up to the present time there has beeni no call for candidates but the basketball fans are beginning to measure up lehigh's chance for a championship team this season special attention is attracted by the fact that manager f s mitman 23 has arranged a game with the university of toronto along with his regular schedule the univer sity of toronto has in the past had crack teams and it will be quite an achievement to beat them and in so doing even up the defeat the soccer team suffered at their hands a few weeks ago the main reason for the hopeful outlook lies in the fact that the en tire squad as it appeared on the floor at the end of last season will be back for the coming season this will give the team quite an ad vantage and should prove a great factor in producing a champion ship team the schedule as announced by manager f s mitman 23 in cludes eighteen games among which are four new teams heretofore games have never been played with the university of toronto syracuse university gettysburg college and new york university the other teams which will present the stiff est opposition and prove the mettle of the veteran team are lafayette rutgers and washington and jef ferson the veteran members of last year's squad include captain lingle harper snyder springsteen hen schen hartung and ex-captain lees captain lingle without a doubt will hold down the position of forward and will direct the team from that position it will be re membered that lingle in the early part of the present football season broke his collar-bone and has been continued on page four after four weeks of hard train ing the cross-country team experi enced its first real competition in the interrmural race held friday over the st luke's course this race was in reality the tryouts as the first seven men will represent the brown and white in our first meet with johns hopkins to be held here next saturday coach kanaly offered gold silver and bronze med als for the first three men to finish the course and with these as an extra incentive the race was hard fought for the first two miles the runners began to string out and af ter the three-mile mark the runners were running exactly in the order that they finished the winner j e erb 23 set the pace after the first two miles and was never again headed finish ing in the exceptionally fast time of 33 2o 3 which is the best time ev er turned in by a lehigh man how ever the course is shortened by about three-eighths of a mile this year the other men finished in the following order : second por ter 33 57 2 ; third siegmund 34.29 fourth raine 35.38 1 ; fifth max well 36.18 sixth levin 36.26 sev enth fancher 36.29 2 ; eighth groff 36.31 ninth egolf 37.58 2 ; tenth robinson 38.49 2 ; eleventh groff 40.49 2 ; twelfth king 41.39 the times were much better than those of the same race of last year which was won by underwood in 35.45 1 . siegmund and porter finished 4th and sth respectively last year the previous best time was 34.08 3 turn ed in by former captain bray in 1920 coach kanaly was very much pleased with the showing of his proteges and our chances for a suc cessful season are extremely bright there are only three meets sched uled for this year besides meeting johns hopkins at home the team will travel to new brunswick on november 11th for a triangular meet with rutgers and lafayette on november 17th the team will go to easton for the middle-states cross-country championships which are to be held over the la fayette course sophomore cotillion club holds election business staff opens new competition the first dance of the season of the st paul's society of the church of the nativity third and wyan dotte streets will be held next fri day evening october 27th in the parish house of the church the guests of the occasion will be forty girls from bishopthorpe manor who will be present for the open ing dance the dance will be exclusively for the members of the st paul's so ciety only men who are members of this club will be admitted this society is composed of the episco pal students of lehigh university although students of other denomi nations may join by paying the dues to the club the rule for members attending the dance will be strictly enforced the music for the dance will be furnished by bahnsen's five piece orchestra and dancing will be from 8 until 1 1 o'clock a short business meeting of the society will be held at 7:30 o'clock at which time all old members will pay the dues for the coming year and any new mem bers may join by applying to either the president j w gardy 23 or the secretary-treasurer f s as tarita 25 exhibiting a sensational attack which literally rushed their oppo nents off their feet the lehigh soc cer artists defeated the university of pennsylvania junior varsity by a score of 3 to 2 on saturday af ternoon the feature of the game was the clever teamwork and pass ing of the lehigh forward line which time after time broke com pletely through the red and blue defense the brown and white flashy cen ter forward fernandez was easily the individual star of the encounter not only was he responsible for le high's three tallies but he several times broke through the opposing fullback line and only fast work on the part of anderson prevented ad ditional scores the day was almost ideal for soc cer and the play was fast and furi ous the halfback defense of nei ther team prevented the passing of the ball and the play alternated from one end of the field to the other notwithstanding the early hour at which the contest was play one o'clock a fairly large crowd was present to cheer the lehigh team on to victory the game was played at this hour in order to per mit the players and spectators to witness the brown-lehigh football game later in the afternoon lehigh was first to score when after carrying the ball through the perm defense fernandez shot the ball in the net on a pass from franko five minutes later fernandez got possession of the sphere in midfield and without any aid passed the red and blue backs and scored again the last score seemed to awaken the perm team and they began a spirited attack which ended in their scoring their first tally mclaugh lin driving the ball into the net af ter brewer had made several sen sational stops the half ended soon after with the score 2 to 1 in le high's favor in the second half the play was very even each team counting once lehigh on a wednesday the smoker held friday evening october 20th was characterized by short spicy talks and lively enter tainment the lehigh six featur ing f c o'keefe 23 at the traps gave several selections and then ac companied the inimitable j h up dyke 23 who gave an excellent im itation of al jolson in the several selections which he sang one of these was mammy and johnnie sang it as no one else can all the frosh appeared in pajamas lend ing a different aspect to the affair prof f c bartlett gave a strik ingly original and a genuinely wholesome talk urging the students to at all times show good sports manship a fencing bout was staged be tween glenn and pease of the soph omore and freshman classes res pectively it was probably the first fencing bout ever witnessed by some of the spectators and was full of action • no decision was ren dered austie taite 16 gave a short and inspiring talk on the serious ness of football and emphasized the importance of the scrub team in making a regular team play good football taite said that just as manners maketh the man so fight maketh the football player and everyone agreed that he was right . after the touchdown song had been sung by the gang a novelty in entertainment was staged by a family of professional tumblers the actions of the young acrobats received great applause dr estes 05 was then called upon and he gave a brief talk on the importance of training held in the making of a good football play er dr estes encouraged the men in the living groups to make every thing favorable for the proper train ing of our athletes a rehearsal of the new short fight yell was held followed by a no-decision bout between wash burn and brinser of the sophomore and freshman classes the con testants were blindfolded and got down upon their knees and swatted at each other with clubs made of newspapers this form of contest was highly enjoyed by those pres ent and drew shouts of laughter and bursts of applause from the spec tators assistant coach leach gave a talk on the condition of the team and prophesied that great things would be accomplished before the close of the season almost everyone joined in the p rade after the close of the smoker and cheered the brown team at the hotel bethlehem as well as serena ded the girls at fern sem the p-rade disbanded at the colosseum the whole evening was enjoyed by all and everyone agreed that it was the best smoker held thus far this year there will be a meeting of the pi delta epsilon in the burr room drown hall at 7:15 o'clock on wednesday evening the pi delta epsilon is an honorary journalistic fraternity that is considered very valuable to lehigh's literary men it should be naturally for it takes up all journalistic matters and set tles all disputes this fraternity was founded in the spring of 1920 by j a gardy 20 the reason for its establishment was to give the literary men recognition and show those connected with the uni versity who was doing all the work continued on page two last thursday evening at 7:30 o'clock the second mandolin club rehearsal of the year was held at drown hall about twenty five men turned out this number being very promising for the time of the season twelve firsts and eight sec onds were out but very few basses the attention of all is called to the fact that the time of rehearsals has been changed from thursday to wednesday night at 7:15 o'clock in drown hall this change is necessary because the mustard and cheese dramatic association will require the stage on thursday night for their coming show unable to seize opportunities when presented the brown and white went down to defeat to brown university last saturday in what proved to be the most bitterly fought contest on taylor field this season not until the final whistle were the bruins sure of their mea ger victory 6to 2 three times in the final period lehigh had the ball within striking distance but the im pregnable defense of the visitors proved too strong for the lehigh plungers and brown always took the ball on downs on one occa sion after storer recovered a fum ble on brown's 6-yard line greer on four rushes was unable to plunge the distance for a score lehigh had a distinct advantage in the opening period each team's punting to size up the other it was in this period that storer pulled an on-side kick with henschen receiv ing the plucky little quarterback carrying the ball to brown's 15-yard line but a double pass was attempt ed which proved too slow and stor er was thrown for a 10-yard loss this coupled with a bad pass by springsteen robbed lehigh of the first chance to score the honors of the second period went to the providence collegians it was in this period that the bruin onians put over the only touchdown of the game storer punted to ei senberg who carried the ball to le high's 30-yard line freddy sweet the mainstay of the brown team who has starred in every game this season was rushed into the game and taking the ball squirmed through the line for a 13-yard gain eisenberg on the next play on a fake-pass play frequently used by harvard carried the ball the re maining distance for a score gu lian missed the goal the whole of the second half was all in favor of lehigh the period was opened by an aerial attack by lehigh and after walker had blocked a punt the ball was carried to brown's 17-yard line things pointed to a sure score when sweet messed up hopes by intercepting a forward pass on his 1-yard line and immediately punted out into the safety zone again in the fourth period a forward pass carried the ball to brown's 18-yard line but the ball went to brown on downs it was at this point that eisenberg fumbled on his 6-yard line but suc cessive plunges by greer failed to carry the ball across a bad pass to sweet on the next play caused him to fall on the ball behind his goal-line being immediately held by burke for lehigh s 2-point score the game was hard-fought and clean so clean in fact that not a single penalty was imposed on ei ther team football relations with brown after being severed for more than twenty years should be re-assumed in the light of the clean sportsmanlike contest which the 1421 the brown and white has deci ded to inaugurate a second compe tition for places on the business staff there are vacancies for one junior and two sophomores and men from these classes are urged to report this competition will be entirely separate from the competition which commenced with the opening of college two sophomores will be elected from this early competi tion which is still in progress and two more sophomores and one ju nior will be elected upon the conclu sion of this new competition if the required amount of work is done all competitors will report to the business manager r s webb 23 in the brown and white room drown hall this afternoon at 5 o'clock no definite time limit for the du ration of this competition has been set but it will probably continue for about six weeks it will be an ex cellent opportunity for men inter ested in newspaper work the cotillion club had a meeting on friday morning october 20th in coppee hall for the purpose of electing members for the 1922-1923 season the cotillion club is an honorary social club composed of sopho mores of lehigh the present club is planning a dance at drown hall the evening of the bucknell game which will also be during house party week in the spring possi bly some time around easter the cotillion club will run another dance at drown hall there will also be other social functions which will be announced at 1421 the brown and white has deci ded to inaugurate a second compe tition for places on the business staff there are vacancies for one junior and two sophomores and men from these classes are urged to report this competition will be entirely separate from the competition which commenced with the opening of college two sophomores will be elected from this early competi tion which is still in progress and two more sophomores and one ju nior will be elected upon the conclu sion of this new competition if the required amount of work is done all competitors will report to the business manager r s webb 23 in the brown and white room drown hall this afternoon at 5 o'clock no definite time limit for the du ration of this competition has been set but it will probably continue for about six weeks it will be an ex cellent opportunity for men inter ested in newspaper work the cotillion club had a meeting on friday morning october 20th in coppee hall for the purpose of electing members for the 1922-1923 season the cotillion club is an honorary social club composed of sopho mores of lehigh the present club is planning a dance at drown hall the evening of the bucknell game which will also be during house party week in the spring possi bly some time around easter the cotillion club will run another dance at drown hall there will also be other social functions which will be announced at
