hall some fifty or more of the one hundred and twenty arts men in college gathered in the arcadia room in the west wing of drown hall filling the room to capacity the meeting was called to order by president e vankeuren 23 who spoke briefly of the hopes and aspirations of the officers of this year's club and what the club hopes to accomplish during the ensuing year the president emphasized the fact that only by the co-operation and individual interest of every member of the club could the offi cers of the club hope to direct them through a successful season the regular routine business of the club was dispensed with as speedily as possible in order to turn the meeting over to the speakers of the evening the first speaker on the program was the new president dr richards he chose no partic ular theme upon which to discourse but gave a general talk upon the value of a liberal education of a technical or more specialized educa tion and of the inter-relation and the dependence of one on the other he said that he thought that the honorable asa packer in founding the institution had been very wise in making it a university rather than an institute of technology lehigh in its three colleges the college of engineering of arts and science and of business administration represents a comparative large field of human endeavor the students in the various colleges by contact in and without the classroom and by exchanging views upon that field of endeavor in which they are par ticularly interested each get a bet ter and broader view upon life and are mutually helpful to one another dr richards further pointed out that one of the real benefits which an arts and science club should bestow upon its members more so than the clubs of the technical so cieties is the ability at any time for a person to get on his feet in pub lic to say what he has to say and to say it with such clearness of thought and tone of voice as to car iry the particular point which he wishes to make clear continued on page four the next speaker on the program was prof palmer head of the col lege of arts and science profes sor palmer spent last year abroad the freshmen won the series of
