arts and science club meets monday dramatics will hold sway soon price five cents vol xxx no 4 lehigh eleven meets st francis forty candidates out for lacrosse society plans big get-to^ther in initial meet of season dr richards to speak annual fall practice starts with five veterans from last year on hand large number of candidates report for annual founders day class contsts loretto collegians will invade bethlehem with a light but fast team rehearsals start this week for old members new men urgently wanted the mustard and cheese will start the winter campaign this wednesday evening line changes made good new material club has history teams nearly even coach baldwin will use spring steen and merrill same backfield will start founded in 1885 by richard harding davis it is one of lehigh's oldest societies on monday evening at 7:45 in drown hall the arts and science club will hold its initial meeting of the year the committee in charge has arranged a program which will be of interest to all men of the de partment included among the speakers will be our new president dr richards who will have some thing of interest to say to the club and prof palmer head of the arts department prof palmer was granted a year's leave of absence from the university last year and spent the entire time abroad prin cipally in switzerland germany and france this year he has re turned to us greatly enriched by his stay abroad and will give the club first-hand information on conditions over there as he saw them the musical clubs are getting un der way and weekly practices are to be held these practices will be under the direction of some mem ber of the bethlehem conservatory of music the clubs have some very good music on hand and numerous trips are being planned among these are trips to harrisburg and york pennsylvania and to asbury park some time in january there will also be a trip of a week's duration some time during the christmas va cation any candidates for the club should come to the weekly practices which will be posted on the various bulletini-boards the first rehearsal was held last evening in drown hall wednesday ends rushing season grid opponents in crucial games lehigh's football opposition swings into action to-n-jcrrow in interesting tints large number of pledges an nounced by the fraternities at rushing season's end forty candidates the largest num ber in recent years reported last monday afternoon for lehigh's la crosse team at which time sticks were issued and plans discussed for the fall practice charlie lattig 03 an ex-captain of lacrosse has volunteered to supervise the work outs during the preliminary train ing although hindered because of lack of space for practice the squad expects to use the ends of the up per field and the roadway below and devote the greater part of the time to stickwork and passing this department of the game was notice ably poor last season and the en tire squad should benefit greatly by the drills which will be held every monday wednesday and friday afternoons as long as the weather permits continued on page four among the men reporting were four of the five lacrosse l men in college j muzdakis k kutz lcl c n bradley and j h dar sie the latter being the only lehigh man to be given a place on the mythical all-american lacrosse team cy morgan the veteran defense man will be unable to re port because of football with the above five named men as a nucleus the outlook for a strong aggrega tion next spring is bright for there are several members of last year's squad available who set a fast pace for the varsity last year the most promising of these are : voss buck brown and white starts competition the annual contests between the sophomores and frosh which are scheduled to be played off on mon day afternoon promise to be very exciting a larger number of sophomores than usual have been turning out for practice on the football and baseball teams how ever they are at a considerable dis advantage due to the fact that many of their good men are ineligible be cause of being letter men russ lee coach for the sopho more football team reports about twenty men out for practice regu larly some of his best prospects for the line positions are : harmon jones olwine rolley and jim childs among his backfield can didates are astarita chuck tay lor wardell craig cheel orr and davis how r ever the indications are that the frosh will walk away with the football for milt roth reports an exrellent squad practically the en tire scrub team that played against stroudsburg last saturday will be in the line-up in monday's game some of the linemen will be ro gers harry cru bush and martin the backfield men will be chosen from the following men prior davis lucker clyde davis ev ans pysom and brown coach roth predicts an easy game for the frosh if they perform anything like they did last saturday continued on page four baseball prospects look better for the sophs than for the frosh while dußois who is coaching the sophomores says very little it is more than likely that he is develop ing a nine that will come through on the long end of the score the frosh squad boasts mostly of good outfielders and a good short-stop hartke a rockhill high school the inkwell club plans a buffet luncheon the football team representing the saint francis college and ec clesiastical seminary of loretto pa will open its season next sat urday when lehigh is met at three o'clock on taylor field although st francis college was in existence twenty-three years be fore asa packer conceived the idea of founding lehigh university the school does not attract as many stu dents as lehigh for this year there are but 165 students enrolled at the jesuit school the lack of a large student body does not necessarily mean that the jesuit collegians will place a weak team on the field training was be gun on september 21 and the squad numbering thirty-one and has been well drilled in the fundamentals the team is coached by john j speedo laughran who last year starred at the university of pitts burgh laughran was a halfback on the pitt football team of last year besides this he is one of the few collegians who are four-letter men speedo won his p"s in football baseball basketball and track st francis has the reputation of putting out champion basketball and baseball teams but this is the first gridiron clan to represent the school since 1915 however laughran even though handicapped by a small squad will place a team on the field the line averaging 170 pounds the backfield 160 pounds lacking weight the team is bound to be speedy coach jim baldwin is driving his charges every day until dark ness descends on taylor field cor recting the faults which cropped up in the game on saturday the student body has nothing but praise for jim and is of the opin ion that the team showed wonder ful possibilities the gettysburg clan was a formidable one they lacked offense but their splendid defense on four different occasions robbed lehigh of winning the game among the faults to be corrected by baldwin this week in prepara tion for the game saturday is the lack of driving force of the back field men the line showed prom ise of being in the near future well nigh invulnerable red hender schott especially showed up well his auburn locks being conspicuous in every scrimmage johnson mil ler and hoffman made every at tempt at center rushing futile while carlisle and cusick broke up many a play that promised a gain it is likely that there will be little continued on page four notice while all the other college activi ties are getting under way and mak ing their plans for the year there is one from which as yet nothing has been heard this is not sur prising as the mustard and cheese the dramatic association of the uni versity is not really heard from un til the winter months set in but this does not indicate that in the mean time the club is stagnant and doing nothing ; on the contrary they are very busy planning and rehears ing for their winter production this year it is the plan of the club to give two productions during the college year a drama or revue in the late fall or early winter and a musical comedy in the spring it is hoped that both these plays may be written by undergraduates as it is one of the purposes of the club to foster and promote play-writing it is the duty and the privilege of every man in college who has a tal ent for dramatics to enter the com petition conducted by the club the first meeting will be held on wednesday is the outgrowth of meetings held by a small group of kindred spirits in the back room of charlie ren nig's during the year of 1884—1885 richard harding davis was one of the leading spirits of this little so ciety which met whenever occasion demanded to satisfy their thirst with charlie's beer and eke their hunger with cheese and mustard it is quite easy to see why when a dramatic society took actual form that the name chosen was mustard and cheese besides the renowned dicky davis there were other men in the original organization who have made their mark in liter ature or in arts charles elmont davis his brother is a w r ell known author and kenneth frazier who drew the first picture to appear as a cut for the society in the epitome of 85 is now a celebrated artist the first production was staged continued on page four burr notice lehigh's football schedule for this fall is by no means easy prac tically the entire group of colleges which will oppose the brown and white mem on the gridiron this year have built their teams around pre vious years material the more prominent games on our schedule are with bucknell brown colgate and muhlenberg these colleges in particular have practically all of their old men back and consequent ly have not only strong teams but at the same time experienced ones which makes lehigh's schedule doubly hard to follow through the game set for this saturday with catholic university has been cancelled and in its stead lehigh will go up against the st francis team st francis college is loca ted at loretto pa this game is not expected to be a very difficult one for the lehigh men as this year marks the first time since 1915 that st francis has had a football team to represent her the aver age weight of their line is 170 pounds while their backfield is said to make about 160 pounds per man the st francis men are however well drilled and though the team does come from a relatively small college and is at the same time more or less in the nature of an unknown quantity lehigh will have to be on the lookout for most any kind of attack the following week the lehigh gridmen will entertain the rutgers collegians on taylor field the big red team started the season rather inauspiciously last week with a 13 to 0 decision over p m c the p m c hopefuls held foster san ford's eleven during three periods and threatened several times to score the new brunswick aggre gation is especially heavy this year and will put up a good game reports come that brown who will oppose lehigh on october 21st at bethlehem has the best team in years brown can well be looked upon as an aggressive and danger ous opponent as she has a squad built around sixteen letter men muhlenberg which is scheduled continued on page four there will be an important meet ing of the burr board in drown hall to-night at 7:15 all mem bers are urgently requested to be present there will be a competition for places on the editorial staff of the brown and white which will be opened next tuesday afternoon october 10th at 4 o'clock all men desiring a place on the board will report at that time to the brown and white room in drown hall there are five vacancies in the freshman class and one vacancy in the sophomore class the work handed in will be gra ded under three classifications : — first the space which the article oc cupies in print second the quality of the article and third extra credit will be given to men getting scoops that is unassigned work which has not been gotten by any one else and which can be used in the paper the grading of the qual ity is as follows : 3 points will be given for the quality of the materi al 1 point for the english used 1 point for punctuality in getting the assignments in on time 1 point for interest taken in the work and the mental attitude of the competitor and 2 points will be given for the method of handling the article each competitor will be given a number which will be known only by the managing editor and which number will be used when the work of the man is considered by the board only men who have done satisfactory work on the competi tion will be considered for mem bership the competition will last from six to eight weeks depending upon the work done by the com petitors all students whose college ad dress has been changed since regis tering please notify the registrar's office in order that the correct ad dress may be put in the directory of students this applies also to those students who failed to record any address at registration the inkwell club of lehigh will hold its first social in the form of a buffet luncheon on tuesday even ing october 10th at 8 o'clock in st peter's parish house at vine street and packer avenue the club consists of all lutheran and other interested students the socials are of a most inviting na ture at these meetings many games are played after which re freshments are served ; or the so cial may consist of a marshmallow and frankfort roast the next so cial however will be a six-o'clock dinner at salem's lutheran church the purpose of these socials is to acquaint the students with the churches and also the girls of the best bethlehem families aside from the socials there will be con ducted a voluntary student bible class at which time there will be discussed methods for facing life's questions able instructors will conduct these meetings the club therefore deals with the moral as well as the social life of the stu dent the club invites particularly the freshmen to attend the first social together with all other
