purchase by lehigh university of the lehigh valley cold storage property at 4th and adams sts for 48,000 was announced by presi dent whitaker after settlement for the two adjoining buildings was completed tuesday morning in announcing the acqui sition of this property locat ed one block from the cam pus president whitaker re vealed that another 100,000 will be spent in renovating the structure improvements will include the installation of a new freight elevator and of new heating and lighting systems acquisition of the property will provide a central location for workshops and storage will pro vide more economical and more efficient operation will permit removing temporary and unsight ly quonset huts on the campus will release certain space in cam pus buildings for other purposes and in removing much of the storage will considerably reduce fire hazards said dr whitaker commenting on the needs for additional space for library fa cilities dr whitaker said the library with no additional facili ties provided in more than 20 years is starting to find itself hard pressed for space as an al ternative to expensive addition to the building the storage of cer tain books which can be placed on 24 to 48 hour availability is be ing considered to illustrate another of many instances of inadequate storage facilities the presi dent pointed out that at the present trunk rooms in drink er and richards houses are utilized for storage but will be released for their original purposes once the new prop erty is ready for use the property runs 80 feet on 4th st and 160 feet on adams st tix sales up requests for football game tick ets outnumbering those received in any previous year have been pouring into the athletic office and the alumni office due to the outstanding record compiled by the big brown team noticeable among these letters are many from alumni who have been out of contact for as long as 15 years some 50 to 100 students will be enrolled as freshmen in enable the mid-year students to catch up with their classes by the beginning of their junior year the move made in re sponse to a large number of requests from february sec ondary school graduates will enable these students to make good use of their time prior to call by the armed forces dean congdon said it should also increase their value to the armed services and will establish them in an educa tional program to which they can return when military service has been completed if these students go into military service before entering college they labor under uncertainties as to whether they can get into college when they return he added with the united states enter ing a period of increased mobili zation we feel an obligation to accommodate young men in our program at a time when it will be most valuable to them we are not returning to an accelerated program but rather providing an opportunity for high school se niors who would be at loose ends until called to armed service dean
