unexpected strength and a stonewall line strong canadian soccer team to appear on taylor field next thursday afternoon hokendauqua field club is de feated as lehigh shows strong ' offensive score 2-1 other sports monday score 0-0 has fine record hendershott features with a 55 yard run as football season opens fernandez franko and f mer cur played well for the brown and white the mining engineering society held their first meeting of the year in the geology lecture room of williams hall on thursday even ing president thomas called the meeting to order at 7:45 o'clock after a short talk on the tentative plans for the coming year he called upon professor skipper eckfeldt to introduce doctor c r richards our new president doctor richards's talk contained many points which were truly food for thought he pointed out the engineer's need for the ability of self-expression and the helpful part which the engineering society could play in the development of this characteristic the advantages of papers and speeches being pre sented to the society by student members was emphasized very strongly doctor richards also spoke of the increasing need of technical training to cope with the situation caused by the decreasing or the exhausting of our natural re sources the importance of eco nomic thought in the handling of men and the knowledge of finance occupied i prominent place in the address in closing doctor richards urged all members present to affiliate themselves with the mother society the american institute of mining and metallurgical engineers following this admirable address prof eckfeldt viewed the history and aims of the mining society in its life at lehigh the meeting was then adjourned and the usual re freshments served the first important game of the soccer season will be played thurs day afternoon at 4 o'clock on tay lor field when the brown and white team meets the powerful university of toronto eleven the visiting team is just commencing an extended tour of the united states in which time they will play many of the leading soccer teams of the country princeton lehigh and perm state are among the teams appearing on their schedule coach carpenter will put his squad in rigorous training this week and will strengthen the weakest points as a final precaution for the game with toronto on thursday the practice game with hokendau qua afforded the lehigh mentor an excellent opportunity to see his charges in action the brown and white offensive attack showed flashes of real teamwork against the local organization and the coach expects to have his men in nne fettle to meet the canadians continued on page four it is hoped that the student body will turn out in large numbers for thursday's game lehigh's soccer team has brilliant prospects for this season and it should have the sup port of every man in college cheer leaders will be out and the band will probably be there to help liven things up gridiron results of future opponents engineers club meets in drown hall the soccer team opened the sea son auspiciously on saturday by de feating the hokendauqua field club by a 2 to 1 score the two teams were very evenly matched throughout the struggle with the brown and white players having a slight advantage as the score in dicates the visitors scored their first and only goal about the middle of the first half it was the result of an offensive by their forward line which carried the ball down to the goal brewer the lehigh goal tender stopped the first shot for the net but in the ensuing scrimmage in front of the goal a shot went home this off-side so the score did not count the new men in the lehigh line up notably fritz mercur and fran ko played an excellent brand of soc cer fernandez lehigh's flashy center forward exhibited his usual good game and sieman played well in defending the brown and white goal continued on page four at the start of the second half lehigh carried the ball deep into the enemy territory but could not the freshman and sophomore classes split the honors in the an nual tying-up and pants-tearing contests held last saturday and each gained one point of the possi ble five that mark the traditional founder's day sports fifty rep resentatives of each class arrayed in scrapping togs consisting for the greater part of pants jerseys and shirts of yesteryear took to the gridiron at the end of the initial half of the lehigh-gettysburg game and after struggling for ten minutes on the dust-laden field nine sopho mores and four freshmen were left helplessly bound the sophomores retaliated in the pants-tearing tilt held after the game and had twen ty-one frosh pantsless in a twink ling while there were but eleven of the sophomores devoid of the cus tomary from the waist down cov ering although many noses were rub bed in the dust and both sophs and frosh held helpless by the body scissors while being tied up the best of spirit prevailed throughout j the fracas few were the trousers • that remained intact and there were j laughs galore as the besmirched but ! happy hundred contestants left the pants-strewn field both classes have football base ball and relay teams practicing daily for the athletic contests yet to be staged the first-year men are put ting their hopes in their football and relay teams to win them the coveted honor of casting aside the ink spot for sunday wear owing to the ne cessity of using several of the relay men for cross-country work the freshman-sophomore relay race will probably be run off between the halves of the lehigh-toronto soc cer game this thursday the foot ball and baseball teams will clash next monday on the lower field at 3 o'clock junior class holds initial meeting several fraternities hold house dances the first college meeting of the year was held at noon saturday at the flag pole the meeting was called to order by a wi hicks 23 president of the arcadia after a brief talk on college affairs in gen eral he introduced w r okeson 96 okey okey who is head of the student self aid bureau told of the work of that organiza tion and urged the student body to patronize the different merchants who were connected with it president hicks told about the number of unfounded rumors that have been circulating about the campus and asked the student body to co-operate in stopping these ru mors at their source dave petty chairman of the steering committee of the alumni then had a few words to say about that committee he also urged the students to patronize the self-aid bureau the steering committee has obtained many athletes and wants the student body to furnish any information they have about athletes for the future h r bosey reiter snoke about the spirit that the students should show at the games in order that our team can have a successful sea son and beat lafayette he also heartily agreed with the work of the self-aid bureau and the steer ing committee nominations for the athletic as sociation representative at - large were held those nominated were e coxe 23 g heikes 23 e o keefe 23 h gihon 23 h h dv bois 23 and c r wire 23 a plea was made by r s webb 23 business manager for the stu dents to back the brown and white by everyone subscribing to date subscriptions have lagged behind the corresponding period of a year ago and the business staff is anxious to get the circulation rolls in order as soon as possible • anyone desiring to subscribe at the present time should give his name to one of the competitors for the business staff or to the circula tion manager j c swartley 24 at the sigma phi a glaring sun lehigh and gettysburg battled for an hour without either team being able to shove across a score the game ending in a score less tie the orange and black clan com ing out of the west from the place made famous by pickett's charge lived up to expectations and were as strong if not stronger than ac counts from the battlefield school indicated before the game their line was like a stone wall and only on a few occasions was it weaken ed by the battering-ram plunges of the lehigh backs the brown and white squad ex hibited a consistently well-played game but lacked the power to shove the ball across the line when in po sition to score it is true that the brown and white outplayed the gettysburg team making nine first downs to two for the orange and black but this inability to shove the ball across and two attempted goals from the field which went wild robbed lehigh of the oppor tunity to inaugurate the season with an entry in the win column in the first period lehigh came within striking distance of the get tysburg goal-line emanuel kicked off and bessemer ran the ball back to the thirty-yard line after two rushes with a gain of but four yards mellinger kicked to smith who was downed in his tracks by sanford on the thirty-yard line two rushes by the orange and black netted but a few inches when mensch got away with an end run but when tackled on the fifty-yard line fumbled and reed dropped on the ball on gettysburg's forty-five yard line gettysburg was penal ized five yards for being off-side a beautiful forward pass melling er to bessemer brought the ball ten yards nearer a touchdown besse mer added six yards through left tackle and storer made a first down on the next play after bessemer failed to gain storer carried the ball to the ten-yard line bessemer advanced the ball a yard but on the next play lehigh was penalized fif teen yards and after two unsuccess ful plays gettysburg took the ball never was gettysburg dangerous the fighting was always in her ter ritory only in the department of punting did they excel the brown on saturday evening several of the fraternities held house dances primarily for the purpose of enter taining freshmen but also to usher in the social activities of the new year at the sigma phi epsilon house over twenty couples greatly enjoy ed one of the best dances given this year music was furnished by several members of one of the col lege orchestras among the houses which enter tained alpha tau omega held a dance in their chapter house and delta tau delta also gave a very enjoyable affair many of the guests witnessed the gettysburg football game earlier in the day freshman wrestlers will meet soon what strides are being made in experiments to bring about the con struction of an auto gasoline engine to conserve the fast-disappearing supply of gasoline were explained in an interesting manner by thomas a boyd assistant to the chief en gineer of the fuel section of the general motors research corpora tion before a joint meeting of the lehigh valley section of the amer ican chemical society and the en gineers club of the lehigh valley at drown hall lehigh university recently members of the two bodies were in attendance from w r estern new jersey and throughout the lehigh valley preceding the meeting about forty-five members were serv ed with a dinner at the hotel beth lehem the meeting at drown hall which was attended by about 150 men opened at eight o'clock w o hearsey of the bethlehem steel company who is president of the engineers club opened the meeting with announcements of the forthcoming annual inspection trip and meeting of that club to be held next friday after a luncheon at the nazareth inn at noon a trip of inspection will be made by automo continued on page four friday morning the junior class held a very spirited meeting in cop pee hall at the opening of the meeting h h dußois represent ing the arcadia gave a short talk in explanation of the recently-dis tributed arcadia pamphlets and again asked for the support of the class in the upholding of the col lege customs the policy and plans of the class for this year were discussed and a thorough explanation of the finan cial status of the class was given due to an error in the printing of ballots last year the result of the election for the position of his torian was stricken off nomina tions for the position of treasurer vacant because of the absence of l tremaine who did not return to college this fall were made at this meeting the men nominated for this position were r j buck austin sayre j j shigo and h r greer it is the plan of the junior class to hold if possible one or two dances this year a committee was appointed to investigate the possi bilities as to dates and faculty ap proval the next meeting of the class will be held in coppee hall at 1 1 o'clock on friday in case of a college meeting it will be held in packer hall immediately following last saturday's football games were mainly marked by slow play ing due to hot weather and by nu merous fumbles practically all of lehigh's future opponents were listed in the winning column al though few of the games were of a kind which would test the real ability of a team st joseph's college next satur day's opponents played a 7 to 7 deadlock with the university of delaware rutgers defeated penn sylvania military college 13 to 0 brown had little difficulty in dis posing of rhode island state to the tune of 27 to 0 muhlenberg did not come through as well as was expected against syracuse and was trounced 47 to 0 colgate romped away on the long end of a 50 to 6 score with clarkson college buck nell found alfred university a tough nut to crack and was only able to chalk up a 14 to 0 score lebanon valley was forced to de feat in the second game of a double header with the army losing by the score of 12 to 0 although out weighed they held the cadets back continually and it was with great difficulty that the army made her scores lafayette plunged through richmond's line and registered a 34 to 0 victory other important games were : — perm 14 franklin and marshall 0 ; princeton 30 johns hopkins 0 yale fill the offices of president and sergeant-at-arms which offices were left vacant when j h hardie and a g harms did not return to college this fall the following men were nomi nated president o p
