wagner releases exam schedule james wagner acting re gistrar has announced the date and time of the summer school examinations the ex amination finals will com mence monday august 7 at 9 a.m and continue to wed nesday august 9 the exam inations as per custom will be three hours the date and time of the various courses are listed on page 4 continued on page 4 col 4 dead line set for state jobs commission says today will be the last day to submit state civil service com mission applications for more than 150 accounting jobs applications may be obtained at the state civil service commission at harrisburg and these places pennsylvania state employment service local offices state office and state stores of the pennsyl vania liquor control board state and district offices of the bureau of employment and unemploy ment compensation state and county offices of the department of public assistance state county and district medical directors of ices of the department of health selective service discussion . . . teague talk ends seminar i have great faith in public taste was the emphatic statement of walter dorwin tea gue dean of american industrial designers speaking last week to delegates of the product design seminar which ended last friday on the lehigh campus teague is one of the founders of the society of industrial designers and was its first president as one of the leading design consultants in this country he has worked with ford motor co east man kodak co national cash re gister co and other large indus trial firms ' the new york designer stressed the necessity of giving a free hand to designers he said when you go to a surgeon for a serious op eration you don't tell him which side you want the incision made on — you trust him completely this sort of trust should be given by industry to its designers he continued teague explained the procedures of his organization which whenever possible presents only one final idea to a client in model form he emphasized that minor design changes at this final stage should be guarded against carefully because of the danger of losing the feel of the whole unit through arbitrary alterations preceding teague tralia after diligently learning the cw or code joe used it up un til last fall when he converted to broadcasting his messages vocally during the winter he arranged to talk with other amateurs in home towns of lehigh students thus permitting the students to talk to their family over the radio at the home of their mutual friend the ham operator a resident of jamestown n.y joe is president of the lehigh amateur radio club brown and white lehigh university friday july 28 1950 volume 60 — number 5 lehigh mil department awaits possible emergency revisions bethlehem pa ment a student must have signi fied his intention of planning to take the advanced course at le high at present there are about 125 men enrolled for the advanc ed subjects this fall and capt schreiner raid there has been a definite trend in the past weeks toward more students taking them should students be called for military service while they are not in school such as during summer vacation there is every indication that they will prob ably have to forget their college career for duty in the services however the bethlehem re cruiting office said that if a stu dent is registered at the time of his calling the defense depart ment would probably allow him to continue his education when president truman granted authority for the armed forces to summon reserves to ac tive duty at their own discretion another problem was created for the innumerable reserves now planning to further their college education so far a uniform poli cy of deferment applying to men in all branches of the reserves has not been decided but there is no doubt that an already serious situation is be coming more serious by the day maj gen lewis b hershey se lective service director said last week that it might become ne cessary to promote a plan of stiffer exemptions for draft age men at present the law exempts veterans with 90 days military service or more married men or persons with children or other dependents also are not being called at the same time the army also announced it was lowering the minimum passing grade on intelligence tests for men seek ing to volunteer for service henceforth the passing mark will be the same for volunteers as for men called up in the draft no official word regard ing revision of the military de partment at lehigh has yet been received capt schreiner said this week in discussing the sta tus of 1300 students who will be enrolled in the courses during the fall semester however as the nation moves in swift strides towards large scale mobilization there is plenty of cause for speculation on the future of the mil setup at lehigh during world war 11 capt schreiner said the advanced military course at the university was discontinued . and students taking the courses were sent di rectly to officers candidates chool after three months there they received their commissions last spring a certain percen tage of basic mil students were allotted deferments which will exempt them from military ser vice until there is a call for gen eral mobilization if they plan to take the advanced course to be eligible to receive such a defer malesky says 18-year-olds must register with the selective service sys tem extended for another year men between the ages of 18 and 25 are still required to register for the draft e s malesky veterans af fairs directors at lehigh reminded draft eligibles wednesday upon reaching the age of 18 a student must register within five days after his birthday however he will not receive a selective ser vice classification until he reaches his 19th birthday when a question naire will be mailed to him and his status determined *" persons becoming 18 may regis ter with malesky in the va office in the administration building men who have registered and have since had a change of status such as becoming married having children or even changing their address must immediately notify their local draft board ma lesky said in the past few weeks draft board officials in bethlehem have been running into undue difficulty because of incorrect outdated in formation of men registered ma lesky warned that it might be too late for a person to change his draft status once he has been call ed for service grades reveal alpha town top scholars alpha town house a living group of less than 20 students lo cated on bethlehems west side once again outranked 60 other in dividual living groups to garner top position in the scholastic rank of living groups for the spring se mester released this week by * james h wagner acting registrar despite a sensational drop of 008 points alpha town house still compiled a highly respectable av erage of 3.007 and led the field by the proverbial mile as a whole the university aver age took its customary upward ' spring sweep to 2.258 against 2.223 for the fall semester tau delta phi again placed second in competition with 2.668 and completed a two year reign as the academic fraternity at le high taylor hall a dislodged tempo 1 from the top spot in dorm competition with an average of 2.647 good enough for third spot in the cumulative ranking as was expected the graduating class was by far the best among the individual classes with 2.452 and town men as a collective group retained their title with 2.3299 perhaps the most outstanding scholastic achievement of any liv . ing group was that of sigma alpha mu have gone to the east end of lon don to work in boys clubs parish es and settlement houses both f kenneth spoor of bir mingham mich class of 49 and lee richards of philadelphia are candidates for holy orders in the episcopal church and are among 40 winant volunteers working in england spoor is working in the parish of st matthews and st john's east london where he assists with parochial calls in
