aimed at assisting college students to adjust more readily to college work a special reading and study clinic summer program for college students will be conducted at lehigh aug 15 to 30 designed primarily to help bethlehem area freshmen succeed at the college of their choice the program will be sreared to the needs of the students participating a thor ough appraisal of each student's interest aptitudes abilities per sonality and reading and study practices will be conducted prior to the start of the program announcement has been made by harry t hahn of the university counseling center pro gram director that enrollment for the clinic will be limited and pri ority will be given first applicants women students will be admitted for the first time josef gtikunst guidance direc tor at jefferson junior high school allentown will assist hahn with the clinic for college students the first of its kind to be offered in this area individual and group coun seling will be provided to assist students in making a satisfactory adjustment to college life and in tensive instruction in the develop ment of efficient reading and study skills will be included instruction will be daily except weekends between 9 a.m and 3:30 p.m registration may be made at the reading and study clinic in the administration building june grads boast new all time high for class gifts representing the largest gift in the history of class memor ials at lehigh insurance policies taken out by the class of 1950 which will have a total value of 132,600 in 20 years were turned over to the university wednesday by eric erikson president of this year's graduating class the contribution represents the 20-year endowment insurance po licies to be supported by 442 mem bers of the class graduated last month prior to the 20th reunion of the class in 1970 the class will de signate the nature and use of its memorial gift fund in announcing the gift erikson said that students who plan to be graduated at founder's day exercises following the com pletion of summer session courses will be contacted this month first adopted by the class of 29 the class insurance program was discontinued for nine years until 1938 following 1958 there will be an uninterrupted flow of class gifts as the result of class insur ance programs adopted since 1938 the gift will be made through individual endowment policies to be carried by each man at a cost of 14.00 per year in the event of death of the insured at any time during the 20 years the 300 val us of the policy is paid at once and such proceeds will be held london philharmonic at lehigh volume 60 — number 2 class-cutting stymied by 79 attendance regulations for the summer session will be gov erned by rule 79 dean wray h congdon chairman of the commit tee on standing of students an nounced this week rule 79 states that when a stu ent shows neglect of his work by too many absences tardiness or other means the instructor may submit his name through the head of the department to the dean of students recommending that the student be warned if approved by the department head the warning is forwarded to the dean who in turn sends a letter to the student should a student persist in his negligence the instructor may sub mit a second report which could result in the student being dropped from the class for negligence of his scholastic responsibilities losing all credit in the course sir thomas beecham the royal philharmonic or chestra of london with sir thom as beecham conducting will high light the concert program of the coming academic year with the presentation of a concert in grace hall dec 15 handling arrangements for the performance here is the student concerts-lectures committee which booked the orchestra fol lowing the cancellation of an american tour by the amsterdam concergebouw musicians from holland to schedule beecham and his noted performers the committee made a shift in its date for the majorca singers they will now appear dec 7 in grace hall producer of 120 operas in england beecham is known throughout the world of music as one of the most colorful conductors in concert halls he made his american debut as guest conduc tor of the new york philharmonic in 1928 and on that trip he also conducted the boston and phila delphia symphony orchestras in announcing the change in schedule charles j moravec uni versity news are outnumbered on cam pus this summer by graduate stu dents and men and women taking adult education courses according to enrollment statistics released monday by james h wagner act ing registrar breaking down the total of 715 stduents comprising the summer enrollment discloses that 346 are undergraduates 173 are graduate students and 196 are persons tak ing adult education courses the undergrads are en the short end of the count 369 to 346 business administration is the most popular curriculum for un dergraduates with 77 enrolled mechanical engineering is runner up with 56 students and electrical engineering follows closely with 51 besides the 346 undergrads on campus there are a number of students taking special courses of fered by the university attending a three week surveying course held by the civil engineering depart ment at camp weygadt columbia n.j are 52 mining and geology students while 38 men are attend ing a four week course at the same camp from the mining engineering department 16 men recently com pleted a field course at bellefonte of the 173 graduate students 105 are working toward the master of arts degree 35 toward the mas ter of science degree and 18 toward the doctor of philosophy ninety of these are majoring in education 19 in history and eight in english while other fields in which gradu ate students are working include mathematics psychology physics metallurgy mechanical engineer ing electrical engineering chemi cal engineering and civil engineer ing there are 31 teachers enrolled in the curriculum workshop being conducted in packard lab and 40 teachers nurses and health educa tion workers in the health work shop who cleared themselves of proba tion besides restricting the activities of another 107 students in compli ance with the university regula tion which specifies that a student who does not pass 12 hours will be placed on scholastic probation 13 students will have their status de termined pending the results of make-up examinations ten students were suspended from the university for the fall se mester because of excessive absen ces and 51 received penalties of additional hours for the same rea son the total number of addition al hours of penalty accumulated by these students was 132 107 go on pro for fall term 34 given boot one hundred seven stu dents were placed on probation for the fall semester by the committee on standing of students at its metting june 16 according to wray h congdon dean of stu dents and chairman of the commit tee on standing of students taking action affecting 336 un dergraduates on the basis of aca demic records for the spring sem ester the committee dropped 31 for poor scholarship when they failed to meet university require ments to restore themselves to good scholastic standing of 155 students who were on probation during the spring semes ter two were continued on scho lastic probation for the fall sem ester because of extenuating cir cumstances and two were contin ued on probation for the summer session seven students withdrew from lehigh during the spring and six failed to complete all their work for the semester and will have their status he had made among directors of public re lations at engineering and techni cal schools robert f herrick di rector of public relations spoke at a seminar on public relations or ganization and administration at last week's meetings of the amer ican college public relations as sociation at the university of michigan ann arbor mich herrick said that engineering and technical college public rela tions officers as the voice of re search science in the united states are in a unique almost frighten ing position of stewardship to a world public he pointed out that the variants in size scope budget and objec tive of even our technical institu tions render meaningless any at tempts to set up ideals of staff size expenditures or programs i believe that we will agree however that public
