class of 26 captain mercur calls his men out to prepare for a difficult schedule 35 men on squad good talks feature the new president in brief address emphasizes the importance of excellence in scholarship faculty appointments announced sixteen additions to the teaching staff were enumerated by doctor richards at close of exercises clouds of doubt are driven away as a large number of oldtimers turn out after college formally opens some good new men are out backfield of last year is almost intact but new men are fighting hard several new faces will be in the line prospects for a winning football combination are extraordinarily bright this year although for a time after the opening ot practice on september 6th it looked as though the new mentor jim bald win would have to rely on an un usually small squad to choose a team it is true that some prepara tory school stars had their paths di verted from the south mountain institution to other seats of learn ing ; it is true that two experienced men failed to come up to entrance requirements ; bnt even these dis appointments were forgotten when the squad of fifty-five were witness ed being put through their paces on friday the many fans who made daily pilgrimages to taylor field to look over baldwin's proteges were prone to be sceptical as to his chan ces of putting a winning team on the field this year but all these pet ty disappointments have been dis pelled by the glare of the stars who now daily are warming up for le high's first game on saturday next fifty-five men twenty-one veter ans of last year's team responded to the call of baldwin on friday this is the largest number to don moleskins since practice was first called of the new men some ex cellent material has been uncovered and it is more than likely that as the practices go on more promising material will reveal itself baldwin although reticent when chances of the season are discussed is highly optimistic and is sure that he will bring lehigh back to a winning level jim baldwin takes the place of frank glick who served but one year as head coach at lehigh not since the time of tom keady has a coach been received with as much fervor and it is surprising how oon/rakhviri^'n the hearts 1 his men each one giving him his last ounce of support continued on page three baldwin as was expected came to lehigh with a coaching system foreign to the veterans of last year's team two weeks of fundamental drills including passing falling on the ball hurdling tackling the dum my and punting served to harden the candidates two innovations new to the rail birds have been made by baldwin — a short drill in calisthenics and charging machines the latter have not been seen for many a day on taylor field and have served excellently in develop ing the line material scrimmage was not indulged in until the 18th and since that time it has been the i have been honored by my se lection to the position of leadership in this organization and i am look ing forward with enthusiasm to the opportunities for service which my new position affords and with hope that i may be able to assist in the further development of the splen did institution which has done so much for education and the ad vancement of the social spiritual and industrial life of america i have become a member of the le high family and i trust that in our relations with each other there will fee developed a mutual respect con fidence and esteem which will en able us to work together for the ad vancement of the ideals for which the university stands ; and that with thorough cordial co-operation we may maintain old ideals and tradi tions and develop new ones which will add still further to the prestige of the university continued on page five to a large degree the success and standing of an educational institu tion is gauged by the character and ability of its graduates lehigh university has been peculiarly for tunate in the character of the men it has turned out i have been as tonished and delighted to find that an unusually large number of the leaders in the industrial and busi lehigh university opened its doors for the beginning of its 57th academic year at the formal open ing exercises on wednesday after noon in packer memorial chapel the building was taxed to its ca pacity to accommodate the student body and their friends and relatives following short chapel exercises conducted by the rev d wilmot gateson chaplain of the universi ty an address was made by dr i charles russ richards the new president of the university the address of dr richard's fol lows | t last june i attended the meet ings of the alumni association and met some four or five hundred of the older members of the family of lehigh university this however is the first opportuniey i have had to meet and greet the younger mem bers of the family you with the faculty constitute the visible uni versity which is organized to serve in a large way the interests of its undergraduate students when you cast in your fortunes with lehigh university you become members of a great organization which will be helpful to you during the years of your preparation for life and which will serve you in various ways and hold your affectionate regard dur ing all of the years thereafter new college head has unusual record freshmen class meets on opening day list of the men who lead lehigh nine games on football schedule the annual y m c a recep tion was tendered to the freshman class last friday evening when the 1926 men were the guests of the occasion this event has always stood out as being one of the most enjoyable as well as successful af fairs of the entire college year and friday night's entertainment was no exception to the rule the frosh were the real guests of the evening and were extended a most cordial welcome by the fac ulty and upper classmen the large upper ball of drown hall was pack ed whether as dr richards men tioned in his talk the large attend ance was due to the excellent re freshments served by the women's faculty club or to a desire on the part of the student body to hear the various addresses and greet the freshmen is a standing question j l lees 23 introduced doc tor richards as the first speaker of the eyeninsf doctor richards cave a fine talk in which he emphasized the point that the freshmen as well as upper classmen should endeavor to make the most out of their op portunity of being at lehigh to ac quire an education he said that he sincerely hoped every man was interested in some phase of the va rious college activities and would take a share in one or more of them doctor richards at this point in his address read a very funny letter from a father who evidently did not have the right conception of a col lege education the moral of the letter was as doctor richards put it to get father here at college to see you the buildings and the facul ty he suggested that a custom of observing dads day be started this occasion would be a time when the fathers who are sending their sons to college could obtain a good idea of their surroundings and the just about the time that the foot ball candidates were called out the first aspirants for the soccer team began practice on the upper field since then the squad has received daily additions until now a large and rapidly-learning group is prac ticing daily the athletic committee has again secured the services of h j car penter the coach who made such a brilliant success last season and un der his able tutelage lehigh should have no difficulty in developing a star aggregation coach carpenter is known throughout this vicinity as a player of note and devotee of the sport he is a registered ref eree and secretary of the bethle hem district soccer association the players returning from last season are warren brewer goal keeper and ex-captain trumbore who was being coached for a right fullback position until he developed leg trouble bob mercur captain hctj fernandez the flashy center iorwara ; waiters iaiside left f and sieman an outside left sieman was displaced last season on the for ward line by saunders but with the latter out of college he should make a strong bid for the berth this year grace and coleman members of last year's squad look promising for the halfback line the former played at fullback in a few games and coleman was coming along nicely at right halfback newlin a left fullback who was in a few games last season being forced to relinquish to devote his time to studies will probably be able to give more time to the sport the coming year not much is known of the new talent certain to arrive with the in coming students with the exception of fritz mercur a brother of bob mercur the latter it is un derstood played a star soccer game year these leaders will have charge lehigh's football mentor is man of experience the first gathering of the class of 1926 was held in the chapel im mediately following the opening ex ercises on wednesday afternoon president a w hicks 23 of the arcadia spoke to the new men and explained the freshman regula tions and the various college cus toms a full explanation of the honor system was given and the necessity for strict compliance im pressed on the entering men president j h lees of the stu dent y m c a spoke on the ac tivities of this organization and asked for the hearty support of all students the head cheer-leader w g thompson 23 urged that the various cheers be learned as soon as possible and announced when cheering practices would be held the captains of the athletic teams were introduced a new departure and after the meeting men with any athletic ability in a sport met the captain of that sport in this way much athletic material in the new class was uncovered on friday morning the class of continued on page six the new football and baseball mentor at lehigh is fast becoming acquainted with the members of the student body ' jim baldwin has already established himself as one of the gang by his ready smile and cordiality mr baldwin's career as an ath lete dates from 1906 when he en tered dartmouth college while there he played two years at the guard and tackle positions since the season of 1909 - 1910 mr baldwin has had a very pleas ant and successful career as an ath letic director and coach during this period mr baldwin coached football at sumerville high school turning out a team which won the inter-scholastic championship from sumerville mr baldwin went to brockton high school where he acted as mentor in base ball and football and as physical director here he again turned out inter-scholastic championship teams in 1913 mr baldwin was appoint ed director of education of all the continued on page three upon looking over this year's football schedule the first thing that will be noticed is the number of home games of the nine sched uled seven are on the lehigh grid iron while two will take place on foreign soil of these two however one is the lafayette game at eastern which is within easy reach of all while the other is with colgate at binghamton the opening engage ment on saturday with gettysburg promises to be a spirited battle it is the first game for both teams and although fumbles and a lack of smoothness of team play will be ev ident it will do much to shed some light on the brown and white pros pects this season gettysburg has been practicing since september the 11th and at the present time their outlook is very bright they have five complete teams on the field each day and this abundance of material has resulted in a spirited fight for positions the team will probably be built up around five veteran line men and captain wood in the back field the other five positions to schools of paterson n j where he remained until 1915 in 1915 he entered the ranks of college mentors by going to rhode island state college as director of physical education and coach of football basketball and baseball during seasons of 1919 to 1921 mr baldwin served a like capacity at the university of maine under his tutelage maine won the new england states championship in football last season after a very success ful year at trinity college durham n c mr baldwin accepted the appointment to the position of as sociate professor in the department of physical education at lehigh during the war mr baldwin served overseas with the third di vision for which organization he acted as director of athletics mr baldwin is a graduate of the harvard summer school of physi cal education and of the illinois summer school for coaches according to custom the brown and white is appending the list of prominent students of the universi ty who will be at the head of the various college athletic teams and other activities about the president since the selection of dr charles russ richards was announced everyone has felt that a new period of ac complishment and expansion will follow under his leadership dr richards is a graduate of purdue university of the class of 1890 receiving the degree of bach elor of science in mechanical engi neering the following year he re ceived the degree of mechanical engineer from the same universi ty in 1895 he won the master's degree in mechanical engineering from cornell in 1920 he was a warded the degree of doctor of science continued on page six since 1891 he has been very act ive in the teaching profession be ginning as an instructor in the de partment of mechanical engineer ing in the colorado agricultural college from 1892 to 1911 he held the following positions at the
