building president c c williams was au thorized by the board of trustees at its meeting last friday to pro ceed with a more detailed study of plans and cost of a combined sports arena and armory no definite ac tion has been taken however to insure its being built this year the board also elected alan craig dodson 00 president of weston dodson co a member at its meting mr dodson will fill the vacancy caused by the death of howard h mcclinitic of pitts burgh in his list of reason why such a building is needed president will iams said that the building will provide a suitable hall for varsity dances for which now adequate space is not available in bethlehem or vicinity to provide for sports he also said the it will provide accomodation for the principal in door intercollegiate sports such as basketball and wrestling which are growing in popularity to such an extent that the present seating capacity is wholly inadequate and certain other minor sports the building is also intended to fill the present need of a hall large enough to hold r o t c drills it is to consist of a stadium capable of seating 3600 people a large room for dances and drills a rifle range squash and handball courts and band and orchestra rooms the stadium wil be useful for univer sity convocations commencements and symphony concerts may reclaim armory if the building is constructed it will be possible to reclaim the armory as a university commons for which it was originally design ed and for what it is now greatly needed the proposed building is intend ed to supplement rather than re place taylor gymnasium the probable location will be south of taylor gymnasium between the upper field and grant street which will provide an pvrrme of approach for automobiles actual construc tion depends elegible for active membership until he has been in residence in lehigh university at least one year and if a student has completed not more than five semesters has junior stand ing and has a scholastic average equal or better than the undergraduate average in lehigh university in the collegiate year pre vious to his application the university average for the collegiate year was 1.92 all applicants must submit their five semester average along with their points 2 the membership in the circle shall in clude 12 men or more two of whom are to be elected in february of each year from the all candidates for class officers submit a list of their qualifications to be printed in the brown and white and provision for the election of an arcadia representative at large the regulations announced are 1 there shall be a general election in which the class officers cheer leaders ar cadia member at large and town council president shall be elected 2 there shall be a period extending from april 25 until 0 p in monday may 1 for nominations and registration of candidates printed forms lor nominations and registra tions of candidates will be available in drown hall 3 all elected men address anthracite conference at hotel bethlehem friday john b kennedy columnist editor and radio commentator will speak at a banquet of the second annual anthracite conference fri day evening in the hotel bethle hem announced president c c williams yesterday dr williams also stated that the meeting will be presided over by frank w earnest jr president of anthracite industries inc and that the conferees will also be addressed by ralph e weeks president of the interna tional correspondence schools and newly elected president of the pennsylvania chamber of com merce and alan c dodson presi dent of weston-dodson and com pany and an alumnus and member of the board of trustees of lehigh university the conference will be held for two days friday and sat urday was editor of colliers a former editor of collier's mag azine mr kennedy has had wide experience in newspaper and mag azine work he-has done newspa per work in london montreal toronto st louis chicago and new york besides being a world war correspondent in europe an assistant to herbert hoover in his post-war relief work ken nedy has been declared the star of morroco by france and is a knight of leopold of belgium as well as a decorated officer of the french academy he came to the united states in 1909 after a preparatory education in canada and england and he graduated from the univer sity of st louis in 1919 majoring in philosophy professor howard eckfeldt head of the department of mining who is chairman on arrangements for the conference predicted that the papers presented at this meeting will mark a new high in the tech nological advances in the study of hard coal mining alan c dodson is president of one of the best known hard coal producing companies and is widely known for his progressive mer chandizing methods ralph e weeks in addition to being the president of the largest university in the world has found time to devote himself to many progressive business and civic en terprizes in the eastern pennsyl vania area he is president of the ralph e weeks company of scran ton and it was largely through his active interest and effort that the recent successful anthracite boos ters drive was completed o observatory open for all students tomorrow a series of open nights in sayre observatory will be sponsored by the e w brown astronomy club these meetings will begin tomor row evening at 9 investigate costs of construction for new building president c c williams was au thorized by the board of trustees at its meeting last friday to pro ceed with a more detailed study of plans and cost of a combined sports arena and armory no definite ac tion has been taken however to insure its being built this year the board also elected alan craig dodson 00 president of weston dodson co a member at its meting mr dodson will fill the vacancy caused by the death of howard h mcclinitic of pitts burgh in his list of reason why such a building is needed president will iams said that the building will provide a suitable hall for varsity dances for which now adequate space is not available in bethlehem or vicinity to provide for sports he also said the it will provide accomodation for the principal in door intercollegiate sports such as basketball and wrestling which are growing in popularity to such an extent that the present seating capacity is wholly inadequate and certain other minor sports the building is also intended to fill the present need of a hall large enough to hold r o t c drills it is to consist of a stadium capable of seating 3600 people a large room for dances and drills a rifle range squash and handball courts and band and orchestra rooms the stadium wil be useful for univer sity convocations commencements and symphony concerts may reclaim armory if the building is constructed it will be possible to reclaim the armory as a university commons for which it was originally design ed and for what it is now greatly needed the proposed building is intend ed to supplement rather than re place taylor gymnasium the probable location will be south of taylor gymnasium between the upper field and grant street which will provide an pvrrme of approach for automobiles actual construc tion depends on the future actions of the board of trustees and the alumni association scott promoted at the board meeting dr fred erick a scott instructor in phy sics was promoted to assistant professor of physics and william jay turner member of the board of trustees was appointed a mem ber of the executive committee of the board other building recommendations of the points to hurst at the phi delta theta house not later than friday evening april 28 the point list is as follows a general rules 1 character shall be the primary re quirement for membership in this frater nity but no person shall be elegible for active membership until he has been in residence in lehigh university at least one year and if a student has completed not more than five semesters has junior stand ing and has a scholastic average equal or better than the undergraduate average in lehigh university in the collegiate year pre vious to his application the university average for the collegiate year was 1.92 all applicants must submit their five semester average along with their points 2 the membership in the circle shall in clude 12 men or more two of whom are to be elected in february of each year from the junior class the remainder to be elect ed in may from the junior class this num ber does not include any men who were active members during the previous year and are eral election of student officers to be held may 3 were announced last night by the arcadia elections committee changes in the regulations in clude the probihition of the use of placards a requirement that all candidates for class officers submit a list of their qualifications to be printed in the brown and white and provision for the election of an arcadia representative at large the regulations announced are 1 there shall be a general election in which the class officers cheer leaders ar cadia member at large and town council president shall be elected 2 there shall be a period extending from april 25 until 0 p in monday may 1 for nominations and registration of candidates printed forms lor nominations and registra tions of candidates will be available in drown hall 3 all elected men shall be chosen by a majority vote according to the ware pre ferential system 4 all men nominated in class elections will be competing for office of class pres ident the nominee receiving the majority of votes shall be the class president the office of secretary-treasurer shall be filled by the runner-up candidate chosen from among those remaining after president is elected 5 each nominee for class tion he will not be allowed to attend the special meeting the entire student body with the exception of seniors will vote pre ferentially for each candidate 15 there will be no campaigning in drown
