15 students cast in play with a near-record attendance estimated for the series of coming weekend affairs guests began pouring in today from all sections of the country and at all hours of the day above houseparty date gloria bendix waves a cheerful hello to brown and white photographer who on a roving tour to day discovered many novel ways and means that 770 girls had devised to accomplish their objective — to arrive at lehigh in time for the annual spring houseparty which opened this afternoon junior prom heads list of houseparty events recovery is near says carothers new date is set for peace forum 30 living group dances athletic events included among activities rutgers is baseball foe king of swing to retard music tempo at request of prom committee the barrenness of a cool damp spring was lifted today with le high's salutation to 770 girls houseparty dates of the student body who began participation in a weekend program featuring the junior prom at dorney park this evening benny goodman's baton will start the affair swinging as stu dents and their guests make the initial stop on a two-day program of formal and tea dancing athletic events and love affairs tomorrow's schedule includes a variety of events among them a varsity baseball game between le high and rutgers at taylor sta dium formal dances sponsored by 29 fraternities dormitory and town groups tea dances in the afternoon at the maennerchor and the saucon valley country club and special living group programs accommodations improved the junior prom committee in charge of tonight's affair has com pleted special arrangements for amplification lighting parking and checking goodman's musical program,too has undergone rec ommendations by the committee with the result that the king of swing will slow down the tempo of his music during much of the evening a balanced program is planned one which will please both those who revel in swing and those who bask in sweet music disregarding the law of aver ages the committee has taken out 300 rain insurance chaperones for the promenade are president and mrs c c will iams mr and mrs george b cur tis and dr and mrs claude g beardslee thirty formal dances will be held on and off the campus tomor row evening fraternities will hold affairs in their respective chapter houses the dormitory sections will combine to hold a dance in the armory and the town group is sponsoring a dance in drown hall o 248 sophomores take examination impromptu english quizz given 48 juniors engineering comprehensive ex aminations were given to 248 soph omores yesterday while 48 arts juniors took an impromptu exam ination in english the engineering comprehensives are given to determine the stu dents ability in engineering if the exam mark and previous scholas tic grades are too low the student will be advised to drop engineer ing the examinations were six hours long and contained 88 ques tions charles w simmons associ ate professor of engineering an nounced that they will be graded within several days the arts juniors were given an hour in which to write an im promptu theme failure will mean that the men will be required to take a course in composition with out credit during the senior year edgar h riley associate professor of english was in charge of the examination o munoz gives talk on chile paul munoz arts 40 was the guest speaker at the semi-monthly meeting april 14 of the liberty high school spanish club mu noz a resident of chile spoke about the geographical conditions historical background sports and people of chile after his talk he answered the club members ques tions on the subject 9 men will be tapped on monday evening for membership initiation ls thursday david j walsh sports editor of the philadelphia record has been selected as the annual spring initi ation banquet speaker of pi delta epsilon national honorary collegi ate journalism fraternity it was announced by eric weiss e e 39 president of the society following its meeting on tuesday afternoon the banquet to be held thurs day evening at the alpha chi rho fraternity house will be attended by the nine students elected to membership tapping of the men who submitted points and were el ected on tuesday afternoon will take place on monday evening those who submitted points are requested to remain in their living groups between 5:30 p m and 7 p m monday walsh served on ins staff walsh who will relate his exper iences as a sports editor in various parts of the country was sports editor of the international news service before he joined the staff of the philadelphia record in july 1938 he has covered the majority of the championship boxing mat ches during the past ten years in addition he has witnessed many important football baseball and track events guests who previous experience in mustard and cheese productions harry gunnison has appeared in brother rat knights in armor ceil ing zero and men in white malcolm carrington president of the club has been involved in practically all of the club's presen tations in the last several years robert dech and william davey made their first appearance before a lehigh audience in brother rat last semester joseph heller was in the cast of ceiling zero while lester rosenfeld was in the recent dramatic workshop presen tation of winterset the petrified forest was first produced by gilbert miller and leslie howard the latter playing the role of alan squier in 1934 the play is in two acts the scene is the black mesa bar-b-q a gas station and lunch room at a lonely crossroads in the eastern arizona desert
