george h cook alumnus of perm state was elected president and dr harry b osborn instruc tor in chemical engineering was elected secretary-treasurer of the new organization dean wray h congdon and theodore a distler dean of lafayette college were guest speakers epitome competition will be opened to freshmen for the first time thursday evening when com petitors for the business staff as semble at 7:30 o'clock in room 104 christmas-saucon hall the competition which will be open to all freshmen who are not on permanent probation will last for the balance of the semester work will include the sale of both advertising and books points se cured will be added to those secur ed by the men next year the total number of points for the two years competition will determine the election of the junior business offi cers though this is a departure from the established custom of limiting business competition to the sopho more year a george ueberroth business manager of the 1939 epi tome said wednesday it is a step forward in keeping with the new idea of a progressive and better epitome other publications have been using freshmen for years and the result is that the better trained sophomores are found on the staffs of the review and the brown and white o williams speaks to group on christianity in industry president c c williams spoke on christian industry recently before a policy norman thomas socialist lec turer author and former presi dential candidate declared that america should attempt to save the world through its peace efforts and set an example of the sup remacy of democracy over total itarianism in his speech to a large audience friday evening in brou ghal high school auditorium mr thomas said that we have done nothing to show the world that democracy can be made to work much of the unrest has been caused by the poor example in the so-called american democracies which are in reality dictatorships he said discusses assassination cautioning newsmen not to quote him as saying that he fav ored assassination he said assas sination is better than indiscri minate war if world peace could be secured by getting rid of hitler as many think it would be better to send a group of professional assassins to do the job since in war you hardly ever get the right man he went on to say mr thomas declared that we are conditioned by habit to go to war when we wish to do some thing and said that instinct is not always the best path to follow he stated that to secure a sure and glorious peace in a world like ours requires an active federation of nations to provide abundance instead enriching a group of peo ple in power while individuals may fight for democracy social ism or other social institution na tions will go to war to secure or defend economical advantages ridicules alarmists mr thomas ridiculed the stories of alarmists who picture hitler as advancing to africa then to south america and finally attacking the united states he humorously re marked a german army would get lost in brooklyn while saying he didn't believe america would be attacked as an act of aggression in the near future he stated we may be attacked in fifty years he repeatedly emphasized that if the united states gets into a european war our task will not be the easy one of supplying the fighting armies of europe if the next war in europe lasts more than three or four months and the united states is drawn in it will be the break-up of civilization europe will break and unfortun ately it will not be confined to the totalitarian states if we do make peace we will make the same mis takes we made in the treaty of versailles calling the united states indis criminate in her good neighbor pol icy he decried our catering to little dictators of south america who are worse than the european dic tators he said we need more than ever a foreign policy and the en forcing of our policy as expressed by president roosevelt mr thomas is against any ex tensive in teaching programs con ducted during the summer months in massachusetts he was selected for the company by shawn when the latter taught at springfield college where mccormack was rat ed as one of the outstanding wres tlers and where he earned letters as a member of gym and track teams outstanding athletes in group youngest members in the troupe are the delmar twins frank and john this season marks their third year as members of the com pany they joined the troupe as understudies three years ago after completing theatrical engagements for a chicago company dennis landers who still holds the pole vault record for okla homa and kansas which he made in 1930 also joined the group when it was being formed he is now making his sixth tour with the company two outstanding swimmers in the company are frank overlees and fred hearn the first was in vited to join the troupe when it was being organized while the lat ter became a member of the comp any when it was on its first nation wide as lehigh and lafayette wrestlers meet for the 14th time since the beginning of wrestling relations honor will be paid members of the 1914 wrestling teams from le high and lafayette who partici pated
