sponsor a speech on socialism and world peace by norman thomas former socialist presiden tial candidate at 8 15 o'clock fri day evening in broughal high school auditorium controversy over the freedom of speech has frequently figured in the career of mr thomas in april of last year he was forcibly ejected from jersey city because of his failure to obtain a permit to speak and upon later application he was denied such a permit in june he attempted to speak at a meeting in newark where missiles were thrown at him and his attempts to speak were stopped by yells and band music tours europe in 1938 in april and may of 1938 mr thomas made a trip to europe in england he spoke before several labor gatherings upon his return to the united states he commented upon the increase in military and industrial organization of russia and upon its dictatorial form of government at the present time mr thomas is chairman of the board of direc tors of the league for industrial democracy of new york city and has been the co-editor of various publications for this organization in a speech at yale university in november mr thomas decried the nazi brutality against the jews and said that an affirmative stand must be taken by the united states since no defensive attitude will win he later favored the liberal ization of american immigration laws as a partial solution of the geman refugee problem favors suppression of bunds he also favored the prevention of allowing the nazi bund camps in this country to form armed groups in addition to his political acti vities as presidential instructor in english and director of dramatics the decision to pre sent this play was made by the club at its meeting thursday af ternoon rights further announced that tryouts for the production janitor in packer hall was injured seri ously yesterday afternoon as he fell from a third floor window on the south side of the building according to late reports from st luke's hospital where the vic tim was taken in an ambulance his condition was reported as cri tical with possible fracture or dislocation of the spinal vertebrae at the time of the accident londer was cleaning the windows in room 307 according to wit nesses he evidently lost his footing plunged three floors and landed on the damp packed earth about eight feet from the side of the building according to charles anderko a university employee who was working on the west side of drown hall and who was the first to reach londer after he had fallen the jan itor regained consciousness by the time a st luke's ambulance arriv ed 15 minutes after the fall in the mean time anderko fearing internal injuries saw that the pa tient was not moved and that he was well covered with overcoats no witnesses to accident the first two plante arts 41 was chosen secretary to section a and walton m henry bus 39 is sec retary of section b the presidents will also serve as representatives on the town council which will hold its first meeting thursday march 9 in drown hall section a which is comprised of non-fraternity men living on wy andotte street dakotah street and the region to the southwest of the bent line formed by the two streets met in the lehigh review room section b including men living on carlton avenue broadway be tween wyandotte street and brod head avenue brodhead avenue be tween broadway and third street west third street from brodhead avenue to delaware avenue and the region inclosed by these streets and wyandotte and dakotah streets met in the arcadia office there were 14 men at each of the two meetings
