stickmen show championship form winning 3 to 1 strong team to be attraction on taylor field tomorrow afternoon at four galsworthy's the pigeon well acted by excellent student cast penn outplayed score 5-3 red and blue aggregation un able to penetrate strong local defense loose fielding and inconsistent hitting cause brown and white defeat since the game with lafayette last saturday coach keady has been placing special emphasis on practice in pegging to bases and on bunting with the exception of a very small number of bad throws and a lot of hard luck in the bat ting end of the game the game on saturday was a good exhibition of baseball ability the next game of the schedule is with catholic university on tay lor field at 4 o'clock on wednes day catholic university's sched ule so far has been very successful saturday in a close fast game with mount st mary's the univer sity was on the long side of an 8 to 7 score hard hitting and ex cellent fielding featured on both teams throughout the game sev eral weeks ago in a game on their home grounds catholic university defeated lafayette by a score of 4 to 1 it is expected that this aggrega tion will furnish stiff opposition to the brown and white batsmen it is probable that the lehigh line-up will be the same as started the la fayette game on saturday on saturday evening the mus tard and cheese dramatic associa tion added one more successful pro duction to their long line of success es when john galsworthy's the pigeon was presented in drown hall the play deals with modern eng lish life christopher wellwyn the pigeon is a well-to-do artist who is very over-charitable this failing is taken advantage of by several people much to his daugh ter's disgust how these unwel come visitors came to the pigeon and how he finally rid himself of them make up the story of the play the part of the pigeon play ed by b e rhoads 23 was ex tremely well done and showed real ability w c klein 24 as ann timson a drunken cabman ; fer rand a frenchman and mrs me gan a flower-seller come to well wyn's house on christmas eve and as the night is stormy he permits them to remain three months pass before matters come to a head and playing tie tournaments the tie match play ed with swarthmore on saturday but adds another to the increasing number of tied matches played this season to date four matches have resulted in a tie those which were played with carnegie tech perm navy and swarthmore captain beck started off in his usual manner by winning in straight sets mattson who is going excep tionally strong was the only other man to come through in the singles beale and koegler losing their matches in the doubles honors were again divided beck and koeg ler winning while beale and cluthe lost the summary : — singles beck lehigh defeated selzer of swarthmore 6-2 6-3 baker of swarthmore defeated beale lehigh 6 - 4 6 - 3 linton of swarthmore defeated koegler lehigh 6-2 6-4 mattson lehigh defeated pratt swarthmore 10 8 6 4 doubles beck and koegler lehigh de feated selzer and baker swarth more 6-3 9-7 linton and pratt swarthmore defeated beale and cluthe lehigh 6-1 5-7 6-3 the match with the university of michigan on friday afternoon had to be called off on account of rain a heavy shower broke in the mid dle of the contest and the match was called off at the time it start ed to rain michigan was leading 2 to 1 sword and crescent taps new members rutgers won in the first annual triangular field and track meet on saturday when they took nine out of the possible fourteen first places giving them 62*4 points over 46 for swarthmore and 17*4 for le high the meet was split into dual scores for the brown and white men in order to allow their indi vidual points to be credited toward their letters this action was de cided upon by the lehigh officials so that the men could score as if the brown and white aggregation had had a dual meet against sepa rate teams the dual score reads : rutgers 79 lehigh 33 swarth more 73y 3 , lehigh 38 the individual points scored by the brown and white men in their respective events is as follows : — carol 14 ; captain bray and van nort 8 points each ; buechley 6^3 ; burgess siegmund beggs roth 6 points each ; cook 5 ; meyers and harms 3 points each with perfect weather conditions and a fast track many dual records were broken rutgers broke nine dual records against lehigh and equalled one other swarthmore made six new lehigh swarthmore records and equalled one the brown and white team also came in for its share of honors practi cally all of the track and four combined musical clubs give final concert philip l mcgrath track troph the winning streak of the la crosse team of the university of pennsylvania was broken last sat urday afternoon by lehigh when the latter registered three goals to their opponents one in one of the best lacrosse games witnessed on taylor field this season the red and blue aggregation presented strong opposition throughout the game deadlocking at the end of the first session but the local col legians outplayed the visitors in the second period and took certainty out of pennsylvania's chances for the championship crown pennsylvania husky and in prime condition started things with a rush at the opening whistle and it was evident that they would prove wor thy of their heralded ability ob taining the ball on the initial face off they made strenuous efforts to send a counter into the net in the opening minutes but the dependa ble lehigh defense tied up the at tack and the attempts of the visit ors proved futile lehigh s shots for the goal invariably went wild until in about the middle of the session hocker getting open in front of the perm goal shot passed macfarland scoring the initial tal ly great field play was exhibited by strauch wilson and hocker who kept working back and forth from one territory to the other and never were lattimer's pupils able to get an extra man into lehigh territory improved stickwork and passing in the second period marked the play of the local collegians dar sie was substituted for whitney who had been moved up on the at tack to replace wilson the latter being unable to continue due to an injury determined to break the tie lehigh forced the issue and in a few minutes red strauch tal lied keeping the play in pennsyl vania territory most of the cessful season last friday evening with their home concert given at the high school building the con cert was rather well attended af ter the programme was completed a dance was held on the gymnasi um floor the program was very good and included several excellent solos by johnny opdyke a r little f w lewis and h b miller op dyke had a very good selection of pieces including old fashioned girl cuckoo and mammy all of which were sung in opdyke's best style little surog homing so well that he gave my am folks as an encore lewis ren dered love's garden of roses very well and gave gray days as issued four passes johnny lees did the twirling for the brown and white and although he was found for eleven safeties was given poor sup port by his team-mates costing him the game lees fanned five and walked four the maroon got a total of sixteen bases on their elev en hits berry clouting the ball for a homer and willever getting a triple adams and lees secured doubles bringing the brown and white's total number of bases to eight the game was played before one of the largest and most picturesque crowds that ever packed taylor field to the brown and white supporters the game meant groans and cries of glee for although an early lead was secured the game was given away in the ninth the maroon stands seemed to take the result as a matter of course as if the result was decreed beforehand lehigh had many chances to win the game but with men on second and third and with one or two out seemed unable to do anything but fan or put up easy pop flies it was in the ninth inning that lafay ette won sending two runs across the plate the game was begun by willever smashing out a single along the third-base foul-line bieber flied to larkin and willever stole sec ond gazella flied to donovan willever going to third only to die there when cbilson was out don ovan to rowley the lehigh team had as good a chance to score in the first frame when after rote flied out to chilsoni adams got a double to center but donovan flied to gazella and rogers swung thrice the second frame was unevent ful for the maroon brunner struck out and ernst flied to donovan starcher singled to left and stole second berry completed the in ning rote to rowley lehigh here drew first blood lees drew a pass and lark in was hit by tierney rowley forced lees at third and larkin and rowley moved a base when society announced the names of those se lected men and requested them to come down on the field the old members then advanced and each removed a brown and white ribbon from his arm and placed it on that of the newly elected member after which followed a period of mutual congratulations the new men were carefully chosen from the whole junior class for their attainments and the work they had done mcgrath a graduate in the arts and science course of lehigh university in the class of 1919 and a very prominent member of the lehigh track team for several years has been honored by a recent action of his former team-mates on the track team by the awarding of a track trophy to the university in his memory in honor of his excellent work on the track while at lehigh these men have named this trophy the philip l mcgrath track trophy on december 19th 1917 he en listed as a private in the coast ar tillery corps and was stationed at forts standish boston mass monroe va where he was com missioned 1 a second lieutenant coast artillery corps june 25th similar trophies have been held in other sports and there has been a need of one in track just as the trophies are awarded in other sports to the best man during that school year so will the philip l mcgrath track trophy be awarded to the member of track and field squad who has shown the best ability dur ing each season the man will be chosen each year by a committee composed of professor h r rei ter physical director the track coach and the track manager and his name will be engraved on the trophy on alumni day the win ner shall be presented with a small suitably engraved model of the trophy a few words about mcgrath will recall him to the mind's of the older students and also serve to show how well this loyal lehigh man de serves this honor mcgrath grad uated from boston english high school and entered lehigh in 1914 he went out for the track team in his freshman year and was a con sistent winner in his first two awarded in other sports to the best man during that school year so will the philip l mcgrath track trophy be awarded to the member of track and field squad who has shown the best ability dur ing each season the man will be chosen each year by a committee composed of professor h r rei ter physical director the track coach and the track manager and his name will be engraved on the trophy on alumni day the win ner shall be presented with a small suitably engraved model of the trophy a few words about mcgrath will recall him to the mind's of the older students and also serve to show how well this loyal lehigh man de serves this honor mcgrath grad uated from boston english high school and entered lehigh in 1914 he went out for the track team in his freshman year and was a con sistent winner in
