alumnus visits with professors professor heichi kamura a lec turer in the department of mining and metallurgy or the medji col lege of technology tobato-shi japan visited several members of the lehigh faculty monday after noon professor kamura earned his metallurgical engineering degree at medji college and came to le high to do graduate work he was awarded his m.s degree at lehigh in 1921 this trip to america is his first visit in the 17 years since he was a student here while in this country he plans to present a pa per to a meetiig of the american institute of metals o luce attends carnegie investigations as well as other observations indi cate that lehigh is attracting in tellectually vigorous students the president said in his report that prospective employers are recognizing faculty of the university and stated conditions in other phases of endeavor reports on activities included were reports on the graduate school summer session library r o t c band athlet ics and physical education health service supply bureau placement bureau publicity buildings and grounds admissions and enroll ment among significant facts in the report were these the 1938 summer session showed an increase in enrollment of 8 per cent while graduate en rollment in the session gained 5 per cent the placement bureau helped 157 students to earn about 3,000 by aiding them to find odd jobs the bureau also directed 171 stu dents in n y a jobs which earned for them 16,029.40 graduating seniors were 77 per cent placed by founder's day this means that 214 members of a class of 278 men had secured em ployment or were pursuing grad uate study the students health service handled 16,414 visits and gave 19,364 treatments during the year the committee on student act ivities supervised 141 social act ivities as follows 40 dances 55 house parties 27 banquets and 19 miscellaneous events only 14 students were repri manded or suspended from the university for misconduct in ex aminations colloquiums will be held at 4 p.m every other thursday at each meeting a member of the faculty and a graduate student will pre ient topics of technical interest arcadia benefits if board accepts plan to change activities shares may get union portion class organizations face cuts by committee's recommendation arcadia's share in the student activities fee will jump from five to twenty-three per cent if the board of trustees approves action taken tuesday by the committee on studen activities the board met late this afternoon the committee's decision to sub mit this plan to the board was prompted by the merging of le high union and arcadia the union received 19 percent of the total but arcadia now performs the functions which both bodies formerly carried on separately the recommendation carried five other reapportionment items the mustard and cheese appor tionment will be increased from 10 to 11 per cent auditorium rent als new scenery required on a larger stage and trucking costs m.s degree at lehigh in 1921 this trip to america is his first visit in the 17 years since he was a student here while in this country he plans to present a pa per to a meetiig of the american institute of metals o luce attends conference alexander w luce associate professor of machine design re turned last wednesday from sky top lodge where he had been at tending the twenty-first semi-an nual meeting of the american gear manufacturers association lehigh's standards have advanced during year trustees are told 248 of 38 grads hired steady progress educationally as evidenced by improvement in the quality of students admitted and in the character of education afforded is reported for lehigh during the past academic year by president clement c williams in his annual educational report to the board of trustees the carnegie investigations as well as other observations indi cate that lehigh is attracting in tellectually vigorous students the president said in his report that prospective employers are recognizing the superiority of graduates from lehigh and similar institutions is being evidenced by comparative employment records 11 are present the president's statement was submitted at the annual fall meet ing of the board this afternoon in the alumni memorial building the meeting presided over by eu gene g grace president of the board was attended by samuel d warriner philadelphia william carter dickerman new york wil liam jay turner philadelphia earle f johnson detroit alex ander potter new york robert farnham philadelphia morton sultzer new york andrew e bu chanan bridgeport conn presi dent williams and walter r oke son treasurer of the university and secretary of the board president williams summarized in his report the work of various administrative departments the achievements of the faculty of the university and stated conditions in other phases of endeavor reports on activities included were reports on the graduate school summer session library r o t c band athlet ics and physical education health service supply bureau placement bureau publicity buildings and grounds admissions and enroll ment among significant facts in the report were these the 1938 summer session showed an increase in enrollment of 8 per cent while graduate en rollment in the session gained 5 per cent the placement bureau helped 157 students to earn about 3,000 by aiding them to find odd jobs the bureau also directed 171 stu dents in n y a jobs which earned for them 16,029.40 graduating seniors were 77 per cent placed by founder's day this means that 214 members of a class of 278 men had secured em ployment or were pursuing grad uate study the students health service handled 16,414 visits and gave 19,364 treatments during the year the committee on student act ivities supervised 141 social act ivities as follows 40 dances 55 house parties 27 banquets and 19 miscellaneous events only 14 students were repri manded or suspended from the university for misconduct in ex aminations laboratory work or for other reasons • o frosh entertained civil engineering society meets in fritz lab twelve freshmen were guests of the civil engineering society at its first meeting of the year wednes day night in fritz laboratory harry g payrow assistant pro fessor of sanitary engineering w j erney instructor in civil engineering a t inaugurate colloquiums in chemistry building a series of chemical colloqui ums was inaugurated yesterday afternoon in the new chemistry building dr harry a neville head of the chemistry department and f p hochgesang research fellow were the speakers according to present plans the colloquiums will be held at 4 p.m every other thursday at each meeting a member of the faculty and a graduate student will pre ient topics of technical interest arcadia benefits if board accepts plan to change activities shares may get union portion class organizations face cuts by committee's recommendation arcadia's share in the student activities fee will jump from five to twenty-three per cent if the board of trustees approves action taken tuesday by the committee on studen activities the board met late this afternoon the committee's decision to sub mit this plan to the board was prompted by the merging of le high union and arcadia the union received 19 percent of the total but arcadia now performs the functions which both bodies formerly carried on separately the recommendation carried five other reapportionment items the mustard and cheese appor tionment will be increased from 10 to 11 per cent auditorium rent als new scenery required on a larger stage and trucking costs necessitated by moving the pro ductions to broughal auditorium have seriously increased the cost of maintaining the present produc tions music clubs get more the combined musical clubs will be granted an increase from 6 to 7 per cent for a four year period the continuance of this grant to be reconsidered in the spring of 1942 the reason for this is that they are still paying off 100 a year on a 400 balance due on the piano which they have given to packer memorial chapel and are at present lacking funds for essential instruments for their symphony orchestra the debating society's appor tionment will be increased from 4 to 4.5 per cent this increase is recommended since the growing popularity of intermural debating and the needs of intercollegiate debating teams require more ade quate support there has also been a 50 loss in the current in come of the society due to the ex haustion of the 100 surplus which has barely carried this society for the past two years reduce class funds the class funds will be reduced from 14 per cent to 10 per cent in order to release funds to of honor to be the freshman class of 50 years ago a record alumni turnout is ex pected for this homecoming week end according to william cor nelius executive secretary of the alumni association the guests of honor are to be the class of 92 who entered lehigh as freshmen fifty years ago a varied program has been planned by cornelius in addition to elaborate plans for the alumni interfraternity council has announced that a cup will be awarded to the fraternity which in the opinion of the judges displays the best house decoration in honor of the returning alumni the deans of the three
