itor of harper's weekly for seven years he has written two books — the passing legions a narrative chronicle of the american red cross work during the world war and the lone eagle a biogra phy of colonel charles a lind bergh amid settings depicting in strik ing motif the architecture of the future george b fife 91 works with the publicity department of the 1939 new york world's fair in writing features and news stories which appear in newspa pers and magazines all over the world for more than a year fife has worked with the fair's publicity department of seven writers and three photographers under the di rection of perley boone more than a million clippings of articles dis tributed by this department have been received from various parts of the globe and among this num ber are included articles in about 50 different foreign languages a number of fife's stories have been translated into german french spanish italian portu ceremony in colloquim led by dr shields tone honorary musical society pledged 12 men wednesday morn ing at colloquium dr t edgar shields head of the department of music and faculty adviser of the society conducted the exercises and welcomed the the symphony orches tra traveled to blair academy where they presented a program of six vocal and two instrumental selections the affair was under the direction of dr t edgar shields director of music the trip was arranged by fred johnson lehigh alumnus and instructor of mathematics and football coach at blair moravian glee club sings the combined musical clubs and the glee club of moravian college for women presented the home spring concert saturday ev ening in packer memorial chapel the program opened with selec tions by the glee club a sym phonic ensemble and male soloists the second part was presented by the moravian glee club included in the program was a 16th century chorale sung by the combined glee clubs accompanied by the sym phony orchestra and miss gretchen newhard at the organ the orchestra of the combined musical clubs furnished music for dancing in drown hall following the concert 250 hear group in n y fifty-five members of the com bined musical clubs presented a concert friday evening sponsored by the semper society at the chapel of the intercession new york city the affair attended by 250 persons preceded a dance in the parish house gymnasium music was provided by lions on elizabethan history seniors vote tomorrow on outdoor commence ment question the final decision as to whether graduation th's year will be held in doors or out will be made to morrow afternoon who have suc cessfully completed certain courses in journalism addi tional courses will be institut ed for this purpose 2 certain honorary student societies be invited to elect an advisory board for the pur pose of making the review more generally representative of student interests 3 the present constitution of the review be revised to in corporate the foregoing and to bring it as far as possible up to the standards of the brown and white group makes recommendation the recommendation was made by a special committee on methods of improving the relations of fac ulty members and student will pre sent character sketches of some of the 1,700 prominent persons whom he has interviewed on subjects they know best dr harvey a neville newly elected head of the department of chemistry and chemical engineer ing will speak at the opening ses sion of the conference on a chemist looks at advertising he w'll expose some frauds and hoax es used in advertising claims of drugs a special edition of the brown and white will be published on the afternoon of the press confer ence it will contain a complete list of contest awards as well as a full account of the day's events cameramen to shoot delegates staff photographers of the brown and white will take a number of candid shots for reproduction in the special issue which will be available to delegates after the awards have been made at the closing session twenty-seven journalism stu dents four faculty members and a representative of a mimeograph machine company are scheduled to discuss problems of secondary school journalism at the seven round table discussion groups on the afternoon of the conference a total of 514 delegates from 93 high and preparatory schools in pennsylvania and new jersey will attend the sessions an mag azines and mimeograph publica tions from schools in the two states to be judged in ten classes of the contest being conducted in con nection with the conference the student voice and school news newspapers of the fleming ton n j high school are planning to send 44 delegates to the sessions this is the largest delegation from new jersey group to hear professors c e.'s to hear lecture the lehigh chapter of the am erican society of civil engineers will hold a meeting at 7:30 p m tomorrow in packard laboratory dr thaddeus merriman a jour neying lecturer will present a talk a student paper entitled maintenance of the pennsylvania railroad will be given by ray mond h snyder c e 38 first extempore speeches to be given thursday sixteen men qualified yesterday for the preliminary eliminations of the williams extempore speaking contests which will be held at 7 30 p m thursday in packard audi torium each contestant will give a six minute speech topics and speak ing positions will be assigned at 2 p m thursday in room 211 christmas-saucon hall the men will then have approximately four hours to develop their talks for extempore presentation there are two contests one for freshmen and another for juniors and seniors five finalists will be selected from each group at the preliminaries the finals will be held on thursday may 12 the six freshmen who have en tered the
