commercial planes test blind landing aid two alumni frank g kear jr 26 and harry diamond 25 have been instrumental in perfect ing a type of blind landing sys tem for airplanes that has been used successfully on the first blind landing of a commercial plane the system called air-track consists of three radio transmit ters one sends a radio course beam another a glide beam and the third a radio marker beacon in practice as the pilot passes the boundary of the airport at a known altitude the marker bea con signals his position what ever the weather the pilot eyes only on his instruments theoret ically lands his ship surely and safely on the runway system tested at pittsburgh the system tested recently at a pittsburgh airport with a penn sylvania-central airlines plane was developed commercial planes test blind landing aid two alumni frank g kear jr 26 and harry diamond 25 have been instrumental in perfect ing a type of blind landing sys tem for airplanes that has been used successfully on the first blind landing of a commercial plane the system called air-track consists of three radio transmit ters one sends a radio course beam another a glide beam and the third a radio marker beacon in practice as the pilot passes the boundary of the airport at a known altitude the marker bea con signals his position what ever the weather the pilot eyes only on his instruments theoret ically lands his ship surely and safely on the runway system tested at pittsburgh the system tested recently at a pittsburgh airport with a penn sylvania-central airlines plane was developed
