rutgers batsmen next opponents unbeaten tennis men conquer pitt squad n y u downed in fast game price five cents assistant managers elected at meeting lacrosse twelve defeats stevens vol xxix no 51 heavy hitting marks interesting contest lees pitches fine ball brown and white overwhelms panthers score 6-0 in interesting match prof h r reiter addresses students on conduct at games and sportsmanship hoboken engineers bow to su perior attack of the lehigh squad captain bray cook carol and siegmund star final score 70-42 lehigh tossers meet strong scarlet squad tomorrow at new brunswick score 7-3 score 5-2 gothamites looked dangerous at start rogers features with home run strauch whitney gonzales and wilson played stellar la crosse for lehigh to-morrow afternoon the brown and white batsmen engage the rut gers nine at new brunswick this will be the first of the two games for this week both of which will be played away the second game to be played on saturday against lafayette on march field will be lehigh's first clash of the season against her ancient opponents these two games should be very interesting for they will complete a triangular circuit between the three teams within a week last saturday lafayette swamp ed the scarlet team with a 13 to 6 score on the new brunswick field forcing two pitchers from the mound and hitting a third liberally press reports say that the game was loosely played and marked through out with hard hitting the rutgers batsmen seemed to hit longacre without much trouble throughout the early part of the game but when seaman relieved the eastonians pitcher the hits be came few and far between what compairison can be made between seaman and the lehigh hurlers is hard to say but the team should have little difficulty in overcoming the scarlet tossers y.m.c.a elects officers at final meeting the lehigh track team on sat urday with perfect weather and track conditions won the dual track meet with haverford on the latter's field having all the better of the argument in the sprints and middle distance runs as well as taking a majority of the field events the final score was : lehigh 70 haver ford 42 of the events lehigh captured eight firsts and ten second places against six firsts and four second places for haverford probably one of the strongest ra ces of the day was the mile-run in which captain bray of lehigh put up a splendid fight and managed to breast the tape l}i seconds ahead of captain grigg of haverford grigg is an especially fast man in this event and was put down for a sure win by the haverford root ens but the final sprint made by bray completely upset all previous dope the lehigh captain came within 6y seconds of the lehigh haverford mark set by tatnall of haverford the quarter-mile event was hot ly contested springsteen was forc ed out by seeds of haverford who was not disqualified by the haverford referee the half-mile event was a fine race cook of lehigh struck a fast stride and hit the tape exactly of a second ahead of mcpher son of lehigh cook sprang away at the start and managed to keep the lead throughout the entire run at times however he was closely pushed by mcpherson who tried in vain to overtake the faster man both men bettered the mark of continued on page four arcadia discusses new vacation calendar at a college meeting which was held friday morning in packer hall the students voted for as sistant managers in the following sports : basketball swimming and wrestling the results of the ballot are as follows basketball a b sayre and e f scheetz swimming m k penwell and w w york ; and wrestling w s davis and a j hottinger after the ballot was taken prof h r bosey reiter spoke to the college on athletics he said that lehigh among many other colleges was under fire due to the lack of sportsmanship shown in the college he mentioned the fact that it was a general opinion that athletics had gone to the bad but said that this opinion was caused by people who judged the organization by excep tions the athletics of to-day are as a whole on a much higher plane than before bosey also said a few words in behalf of the athletic commit tee he said that the system used here is better as a whole than the majority of systems used at the present time he said that student control was much better than fac ulty control in that it is difficult to obtain men on the faculty who will take an interest in controlling sports continued on page three prof reiter then presented a new light on the much-discussed problem of athletic professionalism he compared two men in the average college one is a student the other is an athlete in the summer the student sets his brain to work and writes a book and the athlete plays on a ball team both receive money for their work and in the fall both return to college the student is received with open arms by the faculty and is honored by posi syracuse racquet men are next opponents for the second time this season lehigh's crack racquet-wielders de feated the university of pittsburgh on saturday afternoon the su periority of the lehigh netmen ov er the panthers was more pro nounced in the second meeting than in the first and the visitors failed to gain a single point lehigh car ried the attack most of the way and at no time during the afternoon was the result of the meet in doubt the second victory over pitt but adds another success to lehigh's rapidly-increasing line of victories and advances them one more step toward a most successful season the constant success of the clay court artists shows that lehigh once again has a team of intercollegiate championship calibre captain beck of the lehigh team upheld his splendid record in the singles by defeating captain will iam of pitt in straight sets 6-0 and 6-3 captain beck not only has the record of not being defeat ed but also has the honor of not having lost a single set in any match this year beale koegler and vventz lehigh's other singles men could not seem to get started at the opening of the tournament and each dropped their first set but came back strong and took the oth er two sets pfeiffer the only man to score for pitt in the opening en gagement when he won in straight sets from laughton found a tartar in wentz and after a hard fought battle succumbed to the vicious at tacks of the brown and white rac quet-man the summary : — singles beck lehigh defeated williams pittsburgh 6-0 6-3 beale le high defeated sarroway of pitts burgh 3-6 6-1 6-3 koegler lehigh defeated green pittsburgh 5-7 6-0 6-3 wentz lehigh defeated pfeiffer pittsburgh 3-6 6-1 7-5 doubles beck and koegler of lehigh de feated williams and pfeiffer of pittsburgh 6-4 6 1 ;
