of admissions who will be toastmaster at the banquet gowdy makes score mules make first score with blocked and recovered kick by rick brown outrushed by a heavier muhlen berg backfield lehigh's engineers were unable to produce a consis tent offense dropping an 18-7 ver dict to the mules it was the sev enth in the 27 game series that the mules have won hampered by a steady rain and a muddy field lehigh's speedy backs were unable to break into the clear consistently and a slip pery ball prevented any accurate passing muhlenberg scored in the first five minutes of play when matusa and munchak blocked ellstrom's punt from behind the goal line and dietrich recovered in the end zone for the mules gutekunst scores on pass the second score came two min utes after the opening of the sec conven tion at the maennerchor last eve ning following the dinner a dance was held in drown hall during the dinner german songs were sung by the group in addi tion to this each school delegation sang one of its school songs approximately 100 attended the dinner howard w ennes jr editor of george washington uni versity hatchet and president of the ina asked for all eligible men for committees to sign up for ap pointments the music for the dance was furnished by larry and his royal barons from easton the swing music fitted in with the big ap ple atmosphere which played no small part in the evening frolics a lehigh representative called all steps for the big apple dance and then gave an exhibition of the dif ferent steps several others fol lowed him with similar perfor mances prof dale gramley head of the journalism department was the chaperon close to 150 attended the dance 3 talks planned will address delegates at closing banquet dr neil carothers dean of the college of business administra tion of lehigh university will be the guest speaker at the closing banquet of the intercollegiate newspaper association convention this evening at the hotel bethle hem winners of the critical contest awards in news editorials and lo cal advertising will be announced by prof douglas bement of george washington university acting executive secretary of the association the banquet speaker is a well known economist who accompan ied col frank knox in the nation wide republican campaign tour as financial adviser last year this year he is the speaker on the na tion-wide radio broadcasting pro gram sponsored by the chase na tional bank guests present this evening are president and mrs clement c williams dean and mrs neil car others dean and mrs philip pal mer dean and mrs bradley stoughton prof and mrs dale h gramley mr and mrs e kenneth smiley dr and mrs w n schwarze and mr and mrs har old b farquhar this issue printed especially for the i n a convention was made fall convention of the inter collegiate newspaper association of the middle atlantic states opened in packard laboratory yesterday afternoon when president c c williams of lehigh welcomed 70 delegates from 20 colleges and uni versities john e stempel managing edi tor of the easton express gave an address on a practicing news paperman looks at college news after delegates had returned from campus tours conducted by members of pi delta epsilon hon orary journalistic fraternity fran cis w hunsberger c e 38 con vention chairman called the open ning session to order he intro duced president williams who in his talk expressed admiration and high esteem for the newspaper profession reporters need contacts stressing how small items ap pearing in a paper increase read er's interest the speaker explained that readers get more enjoyment from stories of themselves and their neighbors you can tell he said how well a newspaper is functioning by the number of small stories in it for it shows the close contact be tween reporters and news sources he stated that the reporter is the one upon which the newspa per depends most he must said stempel know the people with whom he is in daily contact by knowing their interests present and future he believes the re porter may ask intelligent ques tions the average individual does not think in terms of news he continued their answers to the reporter's questions should suggest stories and further questioning should bring out information use ful to the reporter ennes conducts meeting discussing writing of news stories the speaker said that the newspaper is the most natural way of telling a story in that the most important part is told first he gave examples of common mis takes in writing and added hints of how to make a story forceful tercollegiate newspaper associa tion meeting in packard auditor ium laid plans to publicize facts about the disease through their publications and by use of post ers acting unanimously on a resolu tion presented by john dougherty of the alfred university fiat lux temporary chairman of the resolu tions committee the convention decided to set up a committee of the editors of all member papers to further the campaign an advisory committee will also be formed this group will be composed of leading workers in the national drive against syphi lis it will be their responsibility to supply facts to the student com mittee broughton speaks phillip broughton assistant in formation adviser to the united states surgeon general stressed the importance of striving to make the wasserman blood test a part of all college physical examinations using posters he outlined the most effective means of publicity in picturing the extent of the disease broughton said that a half million new cases and 600,000 old cases are reported to doctors each year he asserted that syphlis could be more efficiently cured than most other communicable diseases preceding the discussion of the proposed drive the beaver news of beaver college jenkintown was unanimously admitted to the association a motion to drop the ttartan of carnegie institute pittsburgh was defeated in favor of a proposal to attempt to
