council vernon k melhado president of the bethle hem chamber of commerce will address a meeting of all house stewards at 7:15 tonight in ar cadia room drown hall he will present another plan of joint buy ing for fraternities the fraternities voted their ap proval or disapproval of the joint buying plan of b j scarpulla new york business man last week contracts and difficulties of indi vidual houses were discussed in a meeting of house stewards held last thursday evening scarpulla has stated that in the light of this new development in the cooperative buying situation he will release the interested fra ternities from their obligation to sign contracts with his organiza tion until they have heard the counter-plan of the chamber of commerce met with chamber the new development is a re sult of a meeting hold by the chamber of commerce on friday morning when joseph hopkins bus 38 president of interfrater nity council and william dukek chem 38 co-sponsors of this plan discussed the council's position in regard to cooperative buying scarpulla released a statement to the press last friday stating that his enterprise was going to employ bethlehem people pay wages and expenses to local in dustry and was not as the cham ber claimed taking money out of town the chamber of commerce is an organization devoted to the in terests of business men of beth lehem who have anticipated the loss of fraternity trade by this move for joint buying however it has recognized the value of joint buying by offering its own plan in a competing bid for fra ternity business hopkins has requested that all fraternities regardless of their ac ceptance or rejection of the prev ious contracts have at least one member present at this meeting tonight scorns drinking commenting on the location dr williams stated crystal spring ravine has the native pos sibilities of being a feature of great beauty and attractiveness which will add to the enjoyment of studying and living at lehigh university it is our intention to proceed with its improvement in the near future the proposed landscaping of this area should make this a cherished nook of the campus ' praises administration james t bergen ch e an american citizen by adoption entered career at 5 at five he entered upon his musical career dividing his en thusiasm between piano and violin with time the violin finally won over the piano it took the death of a czar to change bauer's musi cal career engaged to accompany a singer on a tour in russia his duties included playing violin solos to fill out the program the em peror's death put a ban on public concerts in the principal cities and the majority of the perform ances were given in small towns no accompanist was available in these places and so solos on the piano were substituted later on when the ban was lifted and the larger cities were visited the tour manager decided that the piano solos were good enough for his purposes and de cided to assume the extra ex pense of engaging another accom panist on bauer's return to paris no one took him seriously as a viol inist circumstances compelled him to take advantage of every op portunity for public appearances and he became a pianist for the simple reason that he was not al lowed to play the violin played in orchestra bauer has since played with many of the important orchestras of the world in 1900 at the in vitation of wilhelm gericke con ductor of the boston symphony he came to america to appear as soloist with that orchestra until his world tour in 1914 he visited this country every two years and he eventually maestro played with but little in termission during the evening he featured a medley of fraternity songs and the alma mater dean enthusiastic i'm really enthusiastic about the senior ball said dean mc conn who together with mrs mcconn was among the chaper ones at the affair in my opinion it was the most attractive and creditable dance we have had at lehigh for a long time and it seemed to me the guests were en joying themselves more than ever before the chairman of the com mittee mr henning and his col leagues are deserving of much credit and credit is also due to the fraternities for their cooper ation the newly-revamped coliseum was decorated in blue and gold with colored lighting effects a low false ceiling extended the length of the hall ventilation was aided by many large electric fans surrounded by fraternity and dormitory booths furnished by the respective living groups the dance floor was always crowded with dancing students and their house party guests who seeminly en joyed the band and their leader who acted as master of ceremonies throughout the evening vocalists included jimmy brown tommy ryan and the three barons during several numbers the entire band sang as a glee club an enlarged public address system gave mr kaye the opportunity to joke with the dancing couples asks for sigma nu's are there any sigma nu's here he once inquired the lead er a graduate of ohio university is a member of this fraternity at times during the evening the usually smooth music was sup plemented by several sessions of the big apple this together with floor sitting autograph seek ing — sammy kaye always oblig ing — and even the singing of a negro spiritual by some undaunted group added spice to the ball although many of the chaper ones from fraternity houses at tended the affair the official chap erones were dean and mrs c m mcconn dean and mrs g b curtis and dr and mrs c g beardslee o thieves enter fraternity thirty-five dollars were stolen from the lambda chi alpha fra ternity at midnight sunday the thieves entered through an un locked door this is the fifth fra ternity house to be robbed at le jhigh this fall report by dean palmer shows selections that more students in the col lege of arts and science major in biology than in any other sub ject was revealed yesterday at a meeting of the faculty of the col lege in the faculty room of the alumni memorial building the report presented by philip m palmer dean of the college of arts and science showed that 33 students are majoring in biol ogy 17 in business 15 in govern ment 14 in geology 13 in journ debating manager raphael g scoblionko arts 39 was appointed assist ant manager morris mindlin arts 38 was named intercollegiate de bating manager it was also de cided that the intercollegiate de bating program will not be ex panded at the meeting tomorrow even ing certificates of membership will be awarded to members of last year's squad who were elected to delta omicron theta j c cal laghan instructor in english and coach of the debating team will anounce a tentative intercollegiate team for this coming season bradford to talk on credit before cosmos club frederick a bradford profes sor of economics will speak on monetary and credit policies at a meeting of the cosmos club to night in the faculty club room at drown hall the club was originally organ ized in the spring of 1926 by prof a a bennett former head of the mathematics department as the science and research club the name was indicative of the prim ary purpose of the club which at that time was limited to men in the physics and mathematics de partments later membership was broad ened until at present most of the departments in the university are represented its membership is rotational and consists of eleven members o alumnus in auto accident early saturday evening charles h ford arts 37 who visited lehigh during houseparty was in an accident at 8:30 satur day evening on broadhead aven ue his car came down broad head avenue and collided with the parked car of w h werst of this city considerable damage was done to werst's car no one was hurt in the accident by h m conner a heavy spattering rain failed to lower spirits or lessen the jov ial mood of 550 couples who danced to the music of sammy kaye and his orchestra at the sen ior ball on friday at the coliseum with dancing from 10 p m to 3 a m the swing and sway maestro played with but little in termission during the evening he featured a medley of fraternity songs and the alma mater dean enthusiastic i'm really enthusiastic about the senior ball said dean mc conn who together with mrs mcconn was among the chaper ones at the affair in my opinion it was the most attractive and creditable dance we have had at lehigh for a long time and it seemed to me the guests were en joying themselves more than ever before the chairman of the com mittee mr henning and his col leagues are deserving of much credit and credit is also due to the fraternities for their cooper ation the newly-revamped coliseum was decorated in blue and gold with colored lighting effects a low false ceiling extended the length of the hall ventilation was aided by many large electric fans surrounded by fraternity and dormitory booths furnished by the respective living groups the dance floor was always crowded with dancing students and their house party guests who seeminly en joyed the band and their leader who acted as master of ceremonies throughout the evening vocalists included jimmy brown tommy ryan and the three barons during several numbers the entire band sang as a glee club an enlarged public address system gave mr kaye the opportunity to joke with the dancing couples asks for sigma nu's are there any sigma nu's here he once inquired the lead er a graduate of ohio university is a member of this fraternity at times during the evening the usually smooth music was sup plemented by several sessions of the big apple this together with floor sitting autograph seek ing — sammy kaye always oblig ing — and even the singing of a negro spiritual by some undaunted group added spice to the ball although many of the chaper ones from fraternity houses at tended the affair the official chap erones were dean and mrs c m mcconn dean and mrs g b curtis and dr and mrs c g beardslee o thieves enter fraternity thirty-five dollars were stolen from the lambda chi alpha fra ternity at midnight sunday the thieves entered through an un locked door this is the fifth fra ternity house to be robbed at le jhigh this fall report by dean palmer shows selections that more students in the col lege of arts and science major in biology than in any other sub ject was revealed yesterday at a meeting of the faculty of the col lege in the faculty room of the alumni memorial building the report presented by philip m palmer dean of the college of arts and science showed that 33 students are majoring in biol ogy 17 in business 15 in govern ment 14 in geology 13 in journ and the globe theater were considered the club notified the bethle hem board of education of its des ires to use broughal auditorium and last monday evening the board gave its approval club secures
