garnet twelve to meet lehigh musical clubs to be at the kurtz theatre college musicians have been booked to perform at local playhouse next week swarthmore team will cross sticks with coach o'neil's proteges tomorrow rally by green mountain col legians in eighth throws scare into lehigh fans fast muhlenberg squad will be met on cinder path tomor row at allentown mr j mark frey pleases audi ence with talk on fields of flanders team is in fine form lees plays brilliantly lehigh runners led by captain bray cook and carol should easily capture meet afield and at bat proves to be deciding factor of game final score 6-3 the lehigh lacrosse team meets the swarthmore stick-men on tay lor field on saturday afternoon the game will be the first of the season for the swarthmore team so their strength this season cannot be determined however swarthmore has always presented a lineup which is full of fight and which is capable of clever stickwork in view of the showing of the visitors in former years coach o'neil is expecting a hard game but has all confidence in his proteges during the past week a few changes have been made in the po sitions whitney formerly point is now playing second defense and brumbaugh is now at point dar sie is at first defense and bush has been shifted to third defense continued on page four the superior work of the lehigh twelve over the rutgers team last saturday when they defeated rut gers 3 to 1 gives the brown and white rooters much confidence as to the outcome of the tilt with english lacrossemen are again beaten the lehigh field and track teams open their season this saturday at 2:30 with a dual meet with muhl enberg the event being held on the allentown collegians field a comparison of the times and distances made by the two teams last saturday in the inter-class meets at both colleges show that lehigh has the advantage in track work while muhlenberg excels in the field events however several of the men : who placed in the try outs this week were unable to take part in the inter-class meet on sat urday due to a met and miner trip and even better results may well be expected continued on page two carol who scored heaviest in the inter-class meet is the only man picked as yet for the hurdles mey er and beggs will try out for the second position harms is expect ed to do very well in the pole-vault cook the freshman sensation7"ftr expected to come through easily in the middle distance runs while captain bray and siegmund should show their heels to the field in the two distance events lamb tal madge and white should easily pick up points in the sprints chi the field in all probability the wearers of the brown and white will not fare so good hampton's mark of 19 feet 2 inches last saturday is fair while wingate's feat of clear ing 5 feet 4 inches in the high jump is only mediocre harms has been pole-vaulting in excellent form of late and will make his opponents do better than eleven feet to best him waltz roth and hoffman lehigh will have another oppor tunity to display its musical talent when the combined musical clubs appear at the kurtz theatre next week the success of the band a few weeks ago made the manage ment of kurtz more than glad to secure another head-liner act of this sort the clubs will appear on three days monday tuesday and wednesday april 17 18 and 19 the program arranged is the re sult of much thought on the part of the managers and represents the very best that the clubs have to of fer and from previous performan ces there is every reason to expect a fine evening's entertainment the program to be presented will include selections by the mandolin club the hawaiian quartette the vocal quartette and the glee club in addition johnny opdyke 23 will sing one of the well-known mammy songs for which he is famous the clubs have been re hearsing steadily this week and have spent a great deal of time in per fecting their act it will be run off in truly professional style as this will be the first appear ance of the combined clubs in bethlehem his year it is certain that a large number will patronize the kurtz on these evenings the regular yearly home concert will be staged at the bethlehem high school building probably during the middle or latter part of may the glee clubs will hold a re hearsal friday at 7:15 in drown hall a good turnout is needed as the meeting last wed nesday evening in drown hall the members of the club were given a very interesting travelogue lecture by mr j m frey y m c a secretary at lehigh who spoke on the fields of flanders and belgi um his lecture was presented in a very historical educational and entertaining manner mr frey has travelled very ex tensively throughout europe and canada before and after the world war coming in contact with the social political and educational con ditions in these countries and was well fitted to present travelogues on these subjects in a highly educa tional and interesting style dur ing the lecture various slides were pictured and many of the views were presented in their natural col oring in the nine years that mr frey has been on the platform he has appeared before many of the higher institutions of learning churches schools civic clubs and commercial and fraternal organiza tions the success of these presen tations has been shown by the re peated requests for them from pla ces where they have previously been presented in his speech mr erey started at new york and gave a brief de scription of his voyage across the atlantic explaining the various islands at which stops were made up until the time when the party landed in antwerp belgium he then with the aid of the slides de scribed various points of interest in the following cities : bruges os tend ghent liege louvain aude narde namur huy-on-the-meuse dinant mechelen waterloo and brussels all of these places men tioned were under the rule of the german army during the war continued on page four mr frey spoke of the conditions which existed in that country and also on the educational system of various colleges he made mention of the fact that there are only nine ty-five students to every one hun sigma nu team wins close game the oxford-cambridge combina tion met with its second reverse in baltimore on tuesday when the colors of the englishmen were low ered by the mount washington club by the scare of 7 , to 2 the britons displayed better form than in saturday's game with johns hopkins holding the americans scoreless during the second half switzer playing first defense for the oxford u cambridge squad was forced to leave the game in the first half after being hit on the head with a mount washington stick and may be out for several days he was replaced by bennett who put up a plucky game the second half was mostly a game of open-field work in which the two teams fought it out for the right to carry the ball and although the battling was of the warmest kind the americans could not get into striking distance for a shot at goal pearson of oxford-cam bridge scored the only goal made in this period the brown and white batsmen got back in the winning column again on wednesday afternoon when durgin the star pitcher of the university of vermont nine was found for eight safeties net ting six runs the game by agree ment was called after the first half of the eighth frame after the green mountain boys had rallied scoring three runs the final count was lehigh 6 vermont 3 johnny lees kept his pitching record unstained by defeat besides pitching air tight ball for six in nings up until the seventh inning the vermont players could not con nect for a single hit but in that in ning tryon drove a hard single to right for the first hit of the game for his team of the three hits garnered off lees tryon collected two one a home-run over the right field fence as in every game played this sea son the brown and white tossers began hostilities first for three innings both teams battled without being able to shove a run across the plate in the fourth adams led off with a long double to center and advanced to third when harwi was thrown out at first lees drove the ball into deep center for a sin gle adams scoring johnson was given a pass and the bases were filled on rowley's infield hit with one out hess hit to short-stop and lees was thrown out at home ro gers drove the ball to the center field fence for a two-bagger scor ing johnson rowley and hess rote singled to right with rogers crossing home plate for the fifth run of the inning rote was out shortly after rogers scored trying to steal second continued on page four the next inning the brown and white came through again scoring another run their last tally of the game donovan was out durgin to carney adams fanned but i larwi was safe at first on carney's error lees hit to short and in an effort to put out harwi at second chevalier muffed the catch and 1 larwi was safe harwi romped home on johnson's single to center rowley completed the inning by taking three lusty swings phi gamma delta to entertain freshmen while the lacrosse team is enter taining the swarthmore twelve on taylor field the brown and white batsmen will try conclusions with the little quakers on their own loam with the excellent showing made against vermont on wednes day the prospects of annexing an other victory are exceedingly bright the relative strength of the swarthmore nine is not very well known in their opening game of the season they easily defeated the philadelphia textile school by a 6 to 4 score during the course of the game coach pop klechner the garnet mentor and former ma jor leaguer used twenty men in the line-up in order to test the ability of his proteges under fire and to get a line on the most prospective candidates the garnet nine appears to be very well fortified in the hurling staff which is headed by captain curley ogden brother of john nie ogden star hurler for the bal timore orioles besides ogden they have george earnshaw star guard of the basketball quintet and doc heinbaugh a budding southpaw the little quakers also possess a combination of sluggers headed by their stocky little shortstop but terworth in the game with the philadelphia textile school out of three trips to the plate he garnered three singles which accounted for three of their runs they also boast of a circuit clouter in hays a freshman find and former chester high star in regard to the strength of the brown and white nine all le high men have had opportunity to formulate their own opinion if coach keady's proteges can show the same form and finished style of play that they showed against the green mountain boys on wed nesday and can keep it up through out the season with an increase in efficiency correspondingly as the season progresses there is little doubt as to the success of this year's campaigning the line-up that coach keady will use is only problematical as he is still in the science who is spending a year's leave of absence in switzerland at zurich the delegate of lehigh university at the celebration of the 600 th an niversary of the founding of the university of padua to be attended by delegates from a large number of colleges some time in may those of the student body who heard dr tridon and dr dever will be especially interested to hear dr w f hoffman lecture in cop pee hall tuesday april 18th at 8 p m on mental balance how to obtain it and how to retain it " dr hoffman is assistant super intendent of the state hospital for insane at rittersville and is a psy chiatjrist of reputation he has been giving lectures and clinics to le high undergraduate and extension course students during the last five years in which he has shown how a psychiatic hospital is not really an asylum following the lecture will be a thirty-minute period for questions the meeting is open to the public this lecture which is under the auspices of the pre-medical socie ty warrants attendance not only because of dr hoffman's eminent ability and his generous services to the university but even more be cause of the practical value of his presentation out of the romantic and technically involved maze of the psycho-analytic and kindred phases of psychology he will offer something tangible and practicable which concerns one of the most vi tal things in human life namely mental poise or balance the sigma nu five defeated the pi lambda phi quintet with a 17 to 12 score in a basketball game last tuesday afternoon the re maining games of the tournament include a game house the committee is being ably assisted in their plans by m j callow the dancing will begin at 10 p m the committee has been for tunate in securing the fantasy six well-known entertainers from al lentown for the music the sub scription will be 5.00 and tickets may be obtained from the mem bers of the committee a recent order from the war de partment announces that major j d patch will be major lang's suc cessor as head of the department of military science and tactics here at lehigh major patch graduates from the infantry school at fort benning georgia in may and is very highly spoken of as a drill and tactical officer major lang's de tail to lehigh ends next fall at which time he will return to active service for at least a year the government has recently de termined to give the inoculation for small-pox to all members of r o t c units who are going to attend summer camp this inoculation will be given at the same time as the inoculation for typhoid which is to be given on the first three saturdays in may all those men who are going to camp this sum mer who have not received this in oculation before will be required to take it at this time the number of men from the le high unit who have stated their plan to attend camp has recently come up to 175 these men are all plan ning and hoping to equal the record of the unit at camp last year the accomplishments of the lehigh unit last year were one of which any organization could be justly proud tennis team to open season with moravian the tennis squad has moved out doors this week since the varsity courts below the physics building have been fixed and is in busy preparation for their first match with moravian college the sec ond match will be with rutgers and then the team will take an extend ed trip through the western part of the state during junior week play ing carnegie tech washington and jefferson west virginia and pitt the material which has been select ed is very good and the freshman candidates are showing especially good form for such an early date the men who are showing the best form and who will probably start the season are capt beck koeg ler wentz beale and laughton prospects for a very lentown for the music the sub scription will be 5.00 and tickets may be obtained from the mem bers of the committee a recent order from the war de partment announces that major j d patch will be major lang's suc cessor as head of the department of military science and tactics here at lehigh major patch graduates from the infantry school at fort benning georgia in may and is very highly spoken of as a drill and tactical officer major lang's de tail to lehigh ends next fall at which time he will return to active service for at least a year the government has recently de termined to give the inoculation for small-pox to all members of r o t c units who are going to attend summer camp this inoculation will be given at the same time as the inoculation for typhoid which is to be given on the first three saturdays in may all those men who are going to camp this sum mer who have not received this in oculation before will be required to take it at this time the number of men from the le high unit who have stated their plan to attend camp has recently come up to 175 these men are all plan ning and hoping to equal the record of the unit at camp last year the accomplishments of the lehigh unit last year were one of which any organization could be justly proud tennis team to open season with moravian the tennis squad has moved out doors this week since the varsity courts below the physics building have been fixed and is in busy preparation for their first match with moravian college the sec ond match will be with rutgers and then the team will take an extend ed trip through the western part of the state during junior week play ing carnegie tech washington and jefferson west virginia and pitt the material which has been select ed is very good and the freshman candidates are showing especially good form for such an early date the men who are showing the best form and who will probably start the season are capt beck koeg ler wentz beale and laughton prospects for a very successful sea son are good arid a very attractive schedule has been arranged which provides for many games at home in addition to several good trips bethlehem pa friday april 14 1922 arts and science
