42 stags attended dance the last artist to appear this year on the program of the student con cert-lecture series was conrad thi bault who gave a recital friday evening in packer memorial chapel before an audience of 900 despite a cough thibault presented a pro gram which included 22 songs four of which were given as an encore this was the first time that such a concert has been presented here the selection of songs included sev eral popular selections an aria from carmen and many classical pieces divided program the program was divided into four parts between each part thi bault took a short rest there were four songs in the first part five in the second five in the third and four selections in the fourth part at the conclusion of the program the applause was so great that the with the lehigh discussion forum's tenet that war be eliminated as a means of settling international disputes president clement c williams today rejected the for um's petition for an 11 o'clock one hour holiday thursday morn ning to discuss means to that end he gave as reasons for rejec tion 1 the petition was presented too late for the faculty to take parlimentary action upon it 2 heads of the departments whose classes would be affected by the holiday objected to the disruption of their work carl palmer president of the forum announced today that the discussion on war will take place on thursday evening in packard laboratory speakers will be major carter collins dr c g beardslee and professor suther land an open discussion will as usual follow the addresses eering received a leave of absence for one year prof inge m lyse was granted a leave until nov 1 1937 profes sor lyse has been awarded a de gree of doctor of technology by the norway institute of technology and will go abroad to receive it and to lecture budget is increased the new budget of 980,580 which was adopted is one of the largest in the history of the university last year the budget totalled 931,875 the increase is due to in creases in salaries additional facul ty appoinments and facility im provements which are planned among the improvements will be renovation of the central heating system which will occur this sum mer according to walter r oke son treasurer of the university the university's income is increaing and a surplus remained at the close of the last fiscal year although the budget is balanced okeson expects a surplus again this year as there has been for the past 20 years bids were received for the new wing of the chemistry building the contract will be let by the building committee in the immediate future and it is expected that the building will be completed in time for the second semester of 1937-1938 mem bers of the building committee are charles d marshall chairman aubrey weymouth and alan c dodson plans for an armory an nex and a new dorm unit were also discussed but no action taken cornelius prize accepted the board voted to accept the 100 prize offered by william cor nelius alumni secretary to be awarded to the senior mechanical engineer who has profited most by his opportunity at lehigh the award will be based on scholarship attainment and personality dealing with the bequest of 100,000 left to lehigh by william gotshall for scholarships in engin eering the board ruled that in the event suitable graduate candidates are not available for scholarships the residue of funds at the discre tion of the president may be used as undergraduate scholarships in engineering equal to tuition approval was given for the placing of a tablet to the memory of mr gotshall in packard labora tory and for a tablet in memory of dr natt m emory late vice pres ident of the university to be placed in the chapel no change was made in the rule limiting the enrollment to 1500 pay um's petition for an 11 o'clock one hour holiday thursday morn ning to discuss means to that end he gave as reasons for rejec tion 1 the petition was presented too late for the faculty to take parlimentary action upon it 2 heads of the departments whose classes would be affected by the holiday objected to the disruption of their work carl palmer president of the forum announced today that will be let by the building committee in the immediate future and it is expected that the building will be completed in time for the second semester of 1937-1938 mem bers of the building committee are charles d marshall chairman aubrey weymouth and alan c dodson plans for an armory an nex and a new dorm unit were also discussed but no action taken cornelius prize accepted the board voted to accept the 100 prize offered by william cor nelius alumni secretary to be awarded to the senior mechanical engineer who has profited most by his opportunity at lehigh the award will be based on scholarship attainment and personality dealing with the bequest of 100,000 left to lehigh by william gotshall for scholarships in engin eering the board ruled that in the event suitable graduate candidates are not available for scholarships the residue of funds at the discre tion of the president may be used as undergraduate scholarships in engineering equal to tuition approval was given for the placing of a tablet to the memory of mr gotshall in packard labora tory and for a tablet in memory of dr natt m emory late vice pres ident of the university to be placed in the chapel no change was made in the in 1919 and his ph.d from princeton in 1924 hall served 35 years dr hall came to lehigh in 1902 as instructor in the biology depart ment which he helped organize he had received his ph b from yale in
