crawford lafayette first home carr and bray of lehigh second and third proposed changes for arcadia two speakers address e.m meet committee submits arcadia con stitution amendments for approval professors eckfeldt and miller tell of mining in mexico and world mineral resources those who attended the y m c a meeting last sunday evening were well repaid by the lecture given by dr j h clewell and the musical selections given by two of the seminary girls miss iva hummel rendered two solos and was accompan ied by miss muriel danner at the piano miss danner also favored the v audience with a excellent piano solo at the conclusion of this pleas ing number dr clewell gave a short talk on checking up the account he said that there has been no time in the history of men except possibly the time of christ when men had to think so intensely affairs are in such a state at the present time that they need good clear headed and thinking men the brown and white's losing streak was decisively broken last saturday when they walked through the muhlenberg eleven on taylor field by a score of 33 to 7 the allentown collegians though considerably outweighed furnished a much stiffer opposition than had been looked for and succeeded in crossing lehigh's goal line for the first time since 1911 on a fumbled pass which placed them on our ten-yard line from where smythe took it over the mustard and cheese club held the first important meeting of the year last thursday night at kurtz's the business meeting was held at eight o clock followed by a banquet at which about twenty members were present including dr emory and professor palmer it was unanimously decided to give a variety show the latter part of ijanuary and will probably be given the week following the mid year examinations it was also de cided to give the main show some time before junior week and re peat this show for the benefit of the house parties during junior week the try-outs for the variety show will begin the first of december as the club is anxious to start things moving at once all kinds of talent is wanted from the student body for this show whether musical ora torical or oriental and it is hoped that the freshmen in particular will show an interest together with the old members of the mustard and cheese who have returned to college it is planned to hold the show in drown hall and to follow it with a dance this is expected to be one of the biggest college af fairs of the year the type of show for the end of the year has not yet been decided upon but it is hoped to be able to present a musical comedy of some sort rehearsals for the latter show will begin im mediately following the variety show continued on fourth page the eligibility of the club was also discussed and it was decided to elect all new members individu ally by vote of the club parts in choruses or mob scenes are to be given to members of the mustard and cheese as far as possible heretofore men were automatically members of the club who stood on the stage during a performance but the present plan provides for the election of new men entirely ac cording to their ability this will in bringing out his subject dr clewell said that just as bookkeep ing is an exact science so is the checking of a man's account a good man must always be able to balance his accounts so that there are no debits on the credit side individual self is effected the second case is when a man by not recognizing his good and bad points directly effects a group of people in his immediate vicinity the third case involves the man who due to selfishness nearsight edness or a like cause will allow his account to get in such shape as to effect the whole community but the last and most important case is that one in which the nation as a whole suffers this is the most dangerous case and should be looked to by the thinking men of to-day then dr clewell drew a con trast by placing beside each ex ample of these cases an illustra tion of what good it does a man to have his accounts checked up continued on fourth page soccer team defeated in close game debating team planned over fifty men attended the first meeting this year of the miners society held last friday night at williams hall the two principal features were addresses by prof howard eckfeldt dept head and prof b l miller president saxman presided at the meeting and first introduced prof eckfeldt who spoke briefly on general topics pertaining to the society before beginning his ad dress proper he said that at pres ent there are 104 men taking the mining course which is the largest enrollment in the history of the college he advised the new men to take an active interest in the society and to get up and tell their experiences so that everyone could profit by them learn to get up on your feet and talk ' ' this is a critical time in the history of the world it will take men with level heads such as the engineer who is trained to see things in the pro per perspective to neutralize this unrest get all you can out of your college training don't fol low the line of least resistance get in touch with things about you go to y m c a meetings and get something out of them keep in touch with your profession and be come affiliated with american in stitute of mining and metallurg ical engineers continued on third page , professor eckfeldt then gave his address on mining methods in mexico and told of his experi ences there in 1906 owing to the peculiar weather conditions prevailing the miners all plant corn during the wet season and run the mines during the dry season they employ a very crude yet rather efficient method called the patio process for extracting the silver from the ore the process usually yields as high as 80 ag owing to the remote wild regions the brown and white cross country team closed a successful season last saturday when they tied with lafayette for first place in the third annual cross country championship of the middle at lantic states intercollegiate asso ciation at easton saturday after noon each team scored 29 points while bucknell who came in in third place scored 62 points con trary to expectations there were only three starters the race was run over the le fayette cross country course of about six miles starting at the northampton country club the course follows the cement road to easton then turns up the hill to the lafayette athletic field end ing with a lap around the cinder track there crawford of lafayette won the muiviuuai nonors oy taking first place followed by w a carr of lehigh in second place and j d bray of lehigh came hdme third in winning the race crawford set a new low record for the course bettering the course record of 34 46 made by russel of lafayette in 1917 by over two minutes an idea of the pace at which the race was run is shown by the fact that the first ten men home were under the old record due to a technicality lafayette retains the title lafayette was title holder in 1916 and 1917 the last years in which the race was run before according to the rul ing made by samuel j dallas referee of the race and president of the a a xl lafayette retains the torical organ recital prof shields devoted the first part of the even ing to lecturing on the history of music while he rendered several selections on the organ during the second half at the close of college last year a committee was appointed by the arcadia to draft certain amend ments to the aircadia constitution the need for which has been felt for some time this committee which consists of j j shipherd chairman n a newell and r e brown has had the matter under consideration since that time and has recommended the following amendments to the arcadia consti tution : 2 that in the future the college meetings shall be conducted by the president of the arcadia instead of by the president of the senior class 1 that article 3 section 1 dent shall be an honorary member of the arcadia he ivill be allowed the floor but will have no vote be stricken out 3 that article 2 section 1 di vision d which states that a living group shall consist of leonard hall shall be stricken out 4 regular meetings of the ar cadia shall be held every first thursday of the month during the college year . 5 article 6 section 1 reads addition should the ar cadia deem it necessary the pe titioner may be summoned to ap pear in person before the body to furnish such additional informa tion as desired 6 all cases not covered by this constitution shall be decided ac cording to the roberts rules of order respectfully submitted j j shipherd chairman n a newell r e brown according to the rules govern ing the changing of the arcadia constitution amendments must be passed by the arcadia itself and a soccer games ever witnessed at lehigh was play ed saturday afternoon on the upper field against the north end team one of the fastest teams of the blue mountain league al though lehigh was defeated by a 3-2 score the team showed up well considering the small number of veterans who could 1 form/thei nucleus of this year's team beard desh and captain lewis played well for lehigh and the work of the nonpiess y beaten harry rote who has been more or less handicapped by injuries so far this year had ample oppor tunity to distinguish himself and his broken field running including one run of 90 yards for a touch down was one of the main features of the contest buzz herring ton who was at quarter during half the game played spectacular ball and his line plunging was the best this season and was respon sible along with the long gains by wysocki in this manner for sev eral of lehigh s scores the brown and white line prov ed too heavy for the muhlenberg backs to tear through and on many occasions they were thrown for big losses owing to the deadly tackling of spagna mccarthy and booth while pons nailed everything that came his way mike wilson received a bad knock in the early part of the game and was forced to retire in favor of saxman who played a strong game on defensive and scored one of the touchdowns on a forw r ard pass from rote larkin played his usual stellar game at left end but was taken out in order to give loos a chance to show his worth and the latter showed up exceedingly well during the game coach keady used two complete backfields the first consisting of herrington wy socki henzelman and savaria and the second of rote douglas carl son and simendinger in addition to these substitutions many changes were made in the line positions and judging from their performance lafayette will have a hard time putting in a substitute team their equal next saturday continued on third page for muhlenberg the work of smythe at quarter crawley at end and parks at tackle was undoubt edly the best on the team smythe scored their only touchdown from the ten yard line after crowley had placed it there by recovering a fumble caused by a high pass from center on a 60 yard run carlson gave crawley a hot chase on the play overcoming a big lead and making a beautiful running tackle a preliminary meeting for the purpose of ascertaining 1 whether it is possible to revive lehigh's de bating society now defunct for many years has been called for wednesday 4 15 p.m in saucon hall it seems unfortunate that lehigh should be able to show no activivty at all in this field de bating offers the best opportunity for mental discipline training in public speaking and familiarity with vital present day problems and it would be greatly to lehigh s credit if interest in this field could be revived our neighboring col leges are all very active in debate challenges are received from them year after year only to be turned down by us because ' ' lehigh is do ing nothing in debate just now ' ' this year has already brought challenges from rutgers c c of n v and others mall no doubt follow among over 1000 lehigh men there must surely be several dozen who have some
