present more awards in oratory and school debates performance as sophocles elec tra a role which has taxed the theatre's great stunned and electri fied new york audiences her re portoire has included the high peaks of dramatic literature although one of her most successful engagements from a box office viewpoint was the notable run of joan bart's play of spanish life the squall this play ran for 14 months on broadway followed by a road tour born in st paul of czech par ents blanch developed a great love for music at an early age she had private toutors in music singing acting anl languages after being brought to new york in her ear liest teens she studied for a few years but gradually found herself becoming more interested in the theatre belasco's understudy with her decision to seek her ca reer in the theatre miss yurka de termined to reach the man who stood for the best in that field i always felt it's no harder to reach the great ones than the near great said miss yurka so she managed through shee persistence to break through the wall of secretaries and henchmen who defended the sanc tum of david belasco and began her career under the great man as a general understudy the type of part that miss yurka favors most she once described in answer to a reporter's query well whether on stage or screen i like what i call astringent roles if you know what i means parts that have a tremendous biting contact with life i long to create charac ters that are real sincere people with red blood in their veins miss yurka will present several of these astringent roles this thursday night in a program spon sored by the student concert-lec tures series she will appear in the auditorium of the broughal high school corner of brodhead and paker avenue at 8:15 p m all students will be admitted on presen tation of their series tiket blanche yurka long-known to broadway as an actress of unusual talent and dramatic skill succeeded in capturing an entirely different type of audience when she worked in hollywood last spring she was cast in the role of madame defarge one of the most striking characters of the movie tale of two cities comparatively unknown to the pacific audiences and n l morse ch e 39 will take the negative of the question resolved that congress should be empowered to fix minimum wages and maximum hours for industry to be third debate this will be lehigh's third non decision debate this season the first having been with albright thurs day afternoon at reading friday evening lafayette traveled to bethlehem to debate lehigh in packard auditorium on the question resolved that the best interests of american labor in the heavy goods industries require the organ ization of unions on an industrial or vertical basis morris mindlin arts 38 and d leet shields i e 39 debated the negative side of the question for le high and lafayette was represented by seymor bean and lambert pur sell about 50 persons attended the debate to hear r soto d cameron bradley arts 38 and coleman citret arts 37 will por tray the leading roles in the mus tard and cheese club's world war spectacle paths of glory which will be presented friday and sat urday evening in drown half both bradley and citret are fa maliar to mustard and cheese audi ences bradley has taken major parts in two of the club's produc tions that of dr carol in yellow jack and of jack homer in salt water he has also taken various minor parts and in addition has served as a member of the techni cal staff he will take the part of private didier a soldier of the ranks who brings out the prizes were authorized by the faculty at their monthly meeting yesterday after noon in the faculty room of the alumni memorial building the first of these prizes consists of 75 and 25 for first and second places respectively for extempor aneous speaking and is open to juniors and seniors a first prize winner is not eligible for later com petition prize for debating the other prize is for intramural debating teams consisting of 120 and 80 for first and second places respectively the amounts are to be divided among the members of each winning team the fund was set up for these prizes by the university regulations for degree of doctor of philosophy were adopted by the graduate faculty last week the degree of doctor of phil osophy is conferred on candidates who have demonstrated in addition to general proficiency and high at tainment in a special field of knowl edge capacity to carry on indepen dent investigation as evidenced by the presentation of an acceptable dissertation embodying the results of original research according to the adopted regulations set forth requirements various requirements are more specifically set forth the candidate is expected to spend three or more years in resident graduated study and at least two years of resident graduate study are necessary work done in other schools tow ard the word or spread over a long period of time will be considered by the graduate faculty and given credit as determined by the faculty and the department under which the candidate is doing his work there is to be a limited number of candidates for the doctorate ac cepted in a limited number of de partments formal application for candidacy must be presented to the graduate board foreign students must have a satisfactory command of the english language must arrange plan the plan of work for the degree must be arranged and then be ac cepted by the major department several minor courses must be in cluded in the program y examina tion the candidate must give evi dence that he has a reading knowl edge of two foreign languages a preliminary examination must be taken by the candidate to deter mine his proficiency in the field of his minutes the second negative speaker will cross-examine the first affirmative speaker like wise for an equal period of time the first negative speaker will be cross examined by the second affir mative speaker following this the second nega tive speaker will deliver a six-min ute rebuttal-summary speech the debate will end with a six-minute rebuttal-summary speech by the second affirmative speaker speaker following this the second nega tive speaker will deliver a six-min ute rebuttal-summary speech the debate will end with a six-minute rebuttal-summary speech by the second affirmative speaker
