honorary classical society doctor swift is a well-known american archaeologist and is a fellow of the american school of classical studies in greece where he was a student in 1914-15 he has published held to discuss plans for the annex to the chemis try building and the proposed dor mitory unit the alumni associa tion is now carrying on a drive to raise sufficient funds for the plan ned building program as was de cided at a meeting last june according to president williams there is a possibility that the con struction of the chemistry building addition might be started by next semester but until the results of to day's meeting are made public a more definite statement cannot be issued members of the building com mittee of the board of trustees are charles d marshall 88 chairman alan c dodson 00 and aubrey weymouth 94 an exhibition of contemporary american etchings woodcuts and lithographs is on display at the university art gallery it shows the original work of art in the graphic medium by forty-nine of the fore most living artists in america a collection of water colors and oils is on display by the artist guild of easton mrs bray of ban gor has on exhibition a group of bacteriologists meet gerrish missing the complete program of blanche yurka actress who will appear at lehigh next week has been an nounced miss yurka who will present a dramatic lecture-recital under the sponsorship of the con cert-lectures series thursday dec 10 will offer six interpretations of leading roles from some of the greatest plays of history the title of the group is the arc of the theatre miss yurka will remark briefly upon the importance of the roles she will recreate and then offer some of the most striking passages from the plays she has selected her detailed program follows lysistrata aristophanes the magistrate scene electra sophocles two scenes romeo and juliet shakespeare the garden scene the way of the world congreve millamant hedda gabler ibsen elizabeth the queen anderson elizabeth characterizations are known several of the characterizations are ones that miss yurka has made famous during her broadway ca reer taken as a unit the group traces the development of the thea tre from the golden age of the greeks to modern-day drama all of them are well-known to theatre goers sidney j lewis arts 37 chair man of the concert-lecture series says the appearance of blanche yurka will be unusual as she will be the first actress and probably the first woman to address a large le high gathering her visit fits in very well with the purposes of the con cert-lectures series a student founded group whose aim it is to bring artists of outstanding cultural achievements to the campus as a supplement to the many events of strictly technical interest this is the second presentation of the series committee for its first program it presented alexander woollcott to the largest audience that had ever attended a lehigh lec ture judging by the career of miss yurka she should have little trou ble captivating the lehigh audi ence lewis stated her record in the theatre has been a long list of triumphs she began by impressing herself upon david belasco when she was unknown and he was the greatest producer of the times after that she had little trouble in becoming a broadway notable and was the star of several memorable stage events her most recent tri umph was her characterization of madame defarge in the movie tale of two cities that part was considered the plum of the season many famous screen stars were eager to earn the role but miss yurka won it in the face of unusually stiff competition after her interpretation of this part on the movie set everyone within sound of her voice was moved to spontaneous applause it was the greatest tribute the screen survey of adventures in biography from ear liest times to the present dr et tinger pointed out that each period in the development of biographical writing has had its own striking characteristics dr ettinger has written two prize winning studies in the field of bio graphy his book pierre soule published by the yale university studies won the dunning prize of the american historical association dr bacteriologists meet gerrish missing the complete program of blanche yurka actress who will appear at lehigh next week has been an nounced miss yurka who will present a dramatic lecture-recital under the sponsorship of the con cert-lectures series thursday dec 10 will offer six interpretations of leading roles from some of the greatest plays of history the title of the group is the arc of the theatre miss yurka will remark briefly upon the importance of the roles she will recreate and then offer some of the most striking passages from the plays she has selected her detailed program follows lysistrata aristophanes the magistrate scene electra sophocles two scenes romeo and juliet shakespeare the garden scene the way of the world congreve millamant hedda gabler ibsen elizabeth the queen anderson elizabeth characterizations are known several of the characterizations are ones that miss yurka has made famous during her broadway ca reer taken as a unit the group traces the development of the thea tre from the golden age of the greeks to modern-day drama all of them are well-known to theatre goers sidney j lewis arts 37 chair man of the concert-lecture series says the appearance of blanche yurka will be unusual as she will be the first actress and probably the first woman to address a large le high gathering her visit fits in very well with the purposes of the con cert-lectures series a student founded group whose aim it is to bring artists of outstanding cultural achievements to the campus as a supplement to the many events of strictly technical interest this is the second presentation of the series committee for its first program it presented alexander woollcott to the largest audience that had ever attended a lehigh lec ture judging by the career of miss yurka she should have little trou ble captivating the lehigh audi ence lewis stated her record in the theatre has been a long list of triumphs she began by impressing herself upon david belasco when she was unknown and he was the greatest producer of the times after that she had little trouble in becoming a broadway notable and was the star of several memorable stage events her most recent tri umph was her characterization of madame defarge in the movie tale of two cities that part was considered the plum of the season many famous screen stars were eager to earn the role but miss yurka won it in the face of unusually stiff competition after her interpretation of this part on the movie set everyone within sound of her voice was moved to spontaneous applause it was the greatest tribute the screen colony could bestow miss yurka's program will again be given in the auditorium of the broughal high school the commit tee will continue its policy of clos ing the doors of the auditorium at 8:15 p m
