three day engagement at local playhouse ithacans snatch intercollegiate honors from perm state in final bouts lehigh finishes fourth meeting well attended secretary of the american writ ing paper co speaks on the paper making industry winners tally 19 points while perm state scores 12 yale 1 1 and lehigh 9 captain felix riesenberg mas ter mariner former commander of the schoolship newport will ad dress the naval engineering socie ty next thursday evening at eight o'clock in the arcadia room drown hall captain riesenberg went to sea as a boy and sailed around cape horn on a square-rigger his sea experiences have been many and varied as he has sailed both on steam and sailing vessels he is the author of under sail the man on deck and is editor of the seafarer and the '* bulletin the latter being the official journal of the american bureau of ship ping his latest work is the stan dard book on seamanship for the xa.merican merchant marine a very cordial invitation is ex tended to all men of all courses who are in any way interested in ships captain riesenbergs talk will not be technical and should appeal to every man in college the lehigh baseball season will be formally opened a week from to-morrow when the brown and white nine takes the field against fordham nothing much is known of the fordham team since this game is their season-opener also however their star aggregation of last year is practically intact which insures a very hotly contested game the lehigh team is rounding in to form under the tutelage of coach keady for the past two weeks the men have been for the most part simply getting the icinks out of their muscles but this week the coach intends to give them some real stiff practice from all early indications lehigh will have this year a team of championship cali bre from among rote donovan bessemer rodgers osburne hen schen and johnson coach keady should have no difficulty in picking a fast capable infield y the outfield at present is giving the coach the most trouble as there is only one varsity outfielder of last year back in the catching department lehigh seems to be well fortified with two first-string catchers in harwi and reed the pitching\st&ff is also all that could be desired with such men as lees adams dubois and light out for the position considering the team from all angles lehigh's nine this year should be far superior to the brown and white team of last year track men practicing for interclass meet the lehigh university band is giving a concert in the kurtz the atre the first part of this week as the first regular program of this year the band is giving the pro gram only in the evening because of the interference in the afternoon with the studies the first perfor mance was last night and went off quite well there will be two other performances one of them to-night and the other to-morrow night last year the band gave a similar concert at the grand opera house about the same time of the year the program was very well given and the band was highly commend ed for the excellent rendition the band now consists of 45 pieces and is led by joseph ricapi to 24 who is taking charge of the band for the second straight year the leader has been able to get ex cellent results from the group and the music this year is even better than it was last year the program will consist of some very good selections on which the band has been practicing for some time two of the selections are quite difficult and the band has been putting extra work on them in or der to render them as perfectly as possible the program will include four well-known numbers and also several excellent popular pieces the selections are as follows : em blem of peace aida march from g verdi's opera wabash blues and old south the band will be able to secure some money by giving this program in order to purchase new music and also provide sweaters for the mem bers who do not at present have them it is expected that the band will a little later give another con cert or a dance in order to raise funds for purposes which will arise continued on page four mermen elect captain w b frames former baseball coach and physical direc tor gives good talk mr w b frames delivered a very interesting address to the y m c a in drown hall last sun day evening he chose as his topic hitting in the pinches mr frames is a graduate of the uni versity of pennsylvania played six years of professional baseball and coached the lafayette baseball team for three years he has recently returned from roumania where he has been engaged in y m c a work for the past seventeen months mr frames related some very in teresting experiences which • have occurred on the baseball diamond and applied them to the greatest game of all the game of life he said that one of the first essentials of a good batter was confidence in himself he must believe that he can connect with any style ball the pitcher throws to him in addition to confidence he must have nerve for when a man is up to bat he is subject to the jeers and taunts of spectators and he must come through at all costs to do this in the face of these difficulties re quires genuine nerve and lots of it said mr frames in mentioning professionalism in colleges mr frames said that the problem would never be solved un til the athletic heads of colleges re alized that it is a man's right to make use of his natural abilities in the summer-time to help earn mon ey to pay for his education just as students who are musically in clined may go out and earn money in the summer so the athlete should be allowed to earn money in ath letics during the summer one point which mr frames es pecially emphasized was the neces sity of correcting weaknesses which we have he cited 1 examples of baseball players who were worth less to the big leagues because of some one little fault which they could not correct he mentioned men notorious in crime who had corrected their weaknesses and had become good christian citizens civil meeting the paper making industry was the subject of an extremely in teresting and instructive talk given by dr r e rindfuss secretary of the american writing paper co at a combined meeting of the chem ical and mechanical engineering societies last thursday night dr rindfuss for some time was con nected with the research depart ment of the university of illinois and at one time had entire charge of the american writing paper company's laboratories he is at present secretary of the company he was eminently well qualified to discuss the subject from its various phases dr rindfuss began his talk by giving his audience a general idea of the inner workings of a paper mill he then went on to give a detailed account of the various raw materials used in the production of different grades of paper he said that wood pulp may be classified under two heads : first mechanical pulps and second chemical pulps the mechanical pulp is made from the wood of a whole tree it is used in the cheaper grades of pa per the chemical pulp which is obtained by cooking the wood to remove the ligaments is used in the better quality papers dr rindfuss then proceeded to de scribe the chemical processes used in the treatment of the pulps he said that there were two primary chemical treatments the acid and the alkaline treatments the acid process is given to pulps which are to be used in bond and writing pa pers while the alkaline treatment is given to the raw materials used in the production of strong bag papers dr rindfuss then went on to describe the different materials used in paper-making saying that up to the year 1880 omly rags were used in the manufacture of paper in the early production of paper the manufacturers were ashamed to use chemical wood pulp when continued on page two final meeting of arcadia on thursday the regular civil engineering society meeting will be held on wednesday evening at 7 : 30 o'clock in the physics lecture room the speaker of the evening will be mr walter caocia who is employed by the rogers-hagerty co contract ors mr caccia is employed as resident engineer on the bethle hem hill-to-hill bridge the topic of the talk will be general con struction and everyone interested h f underwood 23 varsity plunger and holder of the taylor pool plunging record was unani mously elected captain of the swim ming team at a meeting of its mem bers last saturday noon under wood has been out for the team all three years he has been in college and this year came forth as a star in his department during the rut gers meet he broke the plunging record by three feet and set the mark at 69 feet for taylor pool he did consistent work in all the meets and took second place in the inter-collegiates held at lehigh on march 11 track practice is well under way now with over 75 men trying out for the team the prospects for this year's team are much better than they have been for several seasons a good nucleus on which to build a new team is left over from last year besides several new men of real ability most of the track equipment has been issued to the men and they are now settled down to hard earnest training coach kanaly is well satisfied with the showing of the candidates but he urges all men who have had any experience at all in track work to come out as there are plenty of openings for good men on the team the first meet is less than a month away and there has not been as much time as might be desired for practice due to the poor weather but with steady consistent work it will still be possible to round out a good team the annual inter-class meet will be held on april 8 this year due to the intense rivalry between the lower classes some very good ma terial which might have not other wise been discovered is hoped to be found this meet will also assist to get the track team in good trim for the opening meet the following saturday with muhlenberg the track is being put in shape now and it is expected that it will be in good condition by the middle of the week springsteen cook and lodge are showing good form in the quarter mile and j childs is progressing rapidly in the art of throwing the in drown hall on thursday evening 7:30 o'clock and it is desired that all regular representatives be present the first meeting of the new arcadia will take place the following thurs day so that it will be necessary for each living group to elect a new representative before that time the town group will elect a new representative some time before this meeting and town men are request ed to watch the bulletin-boards for an announcement of the time and place of this meeting in order to have a strong arca dia and a working student govern ing body it is necessary that its membership be composed of the best men the college has to offer each living group should elect the man who is most active and best fitted to occupy such a position lehigh again was represented in the first bout when warriner op posed holmes of princeton in the 125-pound class the men were on their feet about half the match when suddenly the lehigh wrestler secured the hold he was waiting for and they went to the mat warri ner retained his advantage until the end of the bout and thus received the referee's decision the other two bouts in this class were fairly close schwartz of columbia de feated kronholm of yale in extra periods after a very even nine min ute bout weimschenk of state overcame chasseus of perm by se curing an early advantage and re taining it throughout the match the red and blue wrestler put up a good fight but was unable to turn the tables on his opponent the bye in this class went to roberts of cornell the first bout in the 135-pound division was fast and furious throughout wallace yale came out on top when the contestants went to the mat and proved him self a worthy opponent by quickly throwing his adversary lienhardt of columbia with a reverse bar and chancery in the second bout of this class webster of princeton opposed evans of state the nas sau wrestler secured an early ad vantage and kept it until near the end when his state opponent quick ly turned the tables and almost threw his opponent webster was awarded the decision due to his greater time wigsten of cornell and davis of perm engaged in a listless contest during the regulation period but in the extra sessions they each displayed a spirited brand of wrestling which finally brought the decision to the perm matman with the small time advantage of 50 seconds the bye in this class went to gihon of lehigh all the bouts in the 145-pound class were won in extra periods ayau of cornell defeated craven of yale by obtaining the necessary time advantage in the extra ses sions hart of columbia former 135-pound inter-collegiate champ ion had little trouble in defeating todd of princeton in the extra periods in the first one he almost obtained a fall while in the second he gained his feet immediately continued on page three cornell university captured the title in the eighteenth annual inter collegiate wrestling meet held in taylor gym on friday and satur day of last week cornell scored 19 points and beat out the former champion perm state who only scored 12 points yale earned third place with 11 points while lehigh beat out columbia for fourth place by scoring 9 points one more than the new york team could gain pennsylvania ranked next with 3 points and princeton 1 brought up the rear with 2 points preliminaries promptly at 2 o'clock on friday afternoon the preliminary matches of the meet began everything had been prepared for the contests and the meet started without a delay or hitch of any kind in the morning all the athletes had weighed in to the satisfaction of the authorities then the drawings were held and the schedule of the meet made up each team received a bye in one class lehigh drawing its in the 135 pound class which gave gihon a rest for the afternoon capt pen dleton the pennsylvania 175-pound entry did not wrestle as his status was disputed by princeton due to his previous competition the princeton claim was upheld by the judges the first bout of the afternoon was in the 115-pound class between schwartzbach lehigh and thomp son yale the lehigh man started off with a rush and took his oppo nent to the mat but could not hold him for a minute's time advantage and 1 as both remained on their feet during the rest of the period the bout went into extra sessions schwartzbach won the toss and chose the underneath position his opponent made good use of his ad vantage and secured a scissors which he used with such good ef fect that the lehigh candidate was almost thrown here schwartz bach giving a great exhibition of grit and stamina broke the hold and secured the advantage which he held until the end of the period during the second period he re mained on top most of the time and thus gained the decision by time ad vantage while this match was in progress handler and kiep the princeton and perm 115-pound rep resentatives were having a scrappy battle on the other mat kiep had secured an early advantage and this he quickly improved so that after four minutes of wrestling his op ponent's shoulders were on the mat the other 115-pound bout was be tween schwab of columbia and captain ackerly of cornell the red captain started out as if he intended to make short work of his opponent but soon changed his mind as schwab put up a plucky battle and took all sorts of chances the match went into extra periods and
