man be gan in 1914 when he became dram atic critic for the new york times he has since been associated with the new york papers the herald and the world among his writings are the comamnd is forward 1919 mr dickens goes to the play 1923 enchanted aisles 1924 the story of irving berlin 1925 while rome burns 1934 and the woollcott reader 1935 which contains what mr wooll coott considers some of the minor masterpieces of the literature of his own day he appeared on the stage of the belasco theater in new york in 1931 as harold sigrift in brief moment he gained recognition by his work with the columbia broad casting system he became famous as the town crier in 1935 his home is in new york city mr woollcott spent two years as an elisted man in the a e f including one year on the editoral council of the stars and stripes result of joint action this lecture and the entire pro gram series for the year comes as a direct result of the efforts of tau beta pi national honorary engin eering fraternity omicron delta kappa national honorary senior fraternity and the brown and white there is a joint committee of the faculty and students on the pro gram series the student commit tee was editorial manager of the brown and white faculty read first lady a 1935 oldsmobile coupe driven by william sheppard e m 38 crashed head on into the wall in back of drown hall at 8 a m yes terday when sheppard swerved to avoid hitting another student who leaped into the path of the coupe from the running board of another vehicle the front of sheppard's car was badly smashed both fenders the radiator grating and the bumper being damaged no one was in jured while the leaders of the present administration have given them selves headaches looking for new things to tax to raise funds for relief wpa pwa and all other abc's some quiet investigator re alizing that there is nothing left to tax has discovered a new way to finance these economic fallacies at least we learn in our eco 3 course that they're fallacies this anonymous friend of the people's has unearthed several pennsylvania laws which if en forced would quickly raise substan tial sums for the administration to experiment with the laws namely sections 1227 2121 and 2152 of the election code limit as the ins so aptly put it the activities of elec tion outcome prognosticators to just plain prognasticating bets are tripled but where does all the money come in you ask section 2121 takes care of that by ruling that any person who makes any bet or wager upon the result of any election within this commonwealth . . . shall first lady a play by dayton and kaufman was read by the fac ulty dramatic club wednesday evening in packard laboratory mrs nelson hibshman presided over the meeting the group will meet again wednesday nov 4 at which time they expect to read ethan frome upon conviction thereof forfeit and pay to the state three times the amount so bet or offered to be bet when one considers that a harris burg electrical contractor has of fered 278,000 on roosevelt's win ning the election he can readily see that three times this amount would come to nearly one million dollars which incidentally is a good beginning for the new tax furthermore any person caught betting on elections in pennsylva nia can be disfranchised whatever that means no one convicted but allay your fears ye students who have wagered a week's allow ance and are already mentally fig uring that should the state request triple the amount you'll have to for feit all your houseparty money for the same anonymous investigator also announces that in the years and years and years of the laws existence there is not a single rec ord of anyone having been con victed for violating it oh well by s j lewis the worst voice in america — that's what some critics say about alexander woollcott his voice is thin and squeaky it doesn't have the richness and deep qualities of the best platform speakers but that hasn't stopped him from be com a star of radio and a popular public speaker throughout the na tion instead of succeeding through his vocal cords he has succeeded through his superlative story-tell ing abilities there are lots of men who can roll their rrrr's better than woollcott but few who can make a simple story more touching or poignant smart alex woollcott as jer ald mason magazine writer once called him has made a living since he left college by stringing words together better than anybody else he first talked himself into a job with the philadelphia record soon after his graduation from hamilton college he went the reportorial rounds for several years working his way into a position on the new york times he stuck in that field until 1922 he probably would still be with the times but an assign ment on the famous rosenthal case took so much out of him that he had to give up with the loss of two chins and one hundred pounds entered dramtics work he took some courses at colum bia the next year and managed at representatives of various com panies will be at lehigh soon to interview seniors stated a e mor gan director of the placement bu reau yesterday the desir on the part of the companies to make a preliminary survey of the situation is the rea son for the early sending of rep resentatives of last year's class of 241 grad uates only 9 are yet to be placed in some position mr morgan requests that the seniors pay a visit to the placement bureau office to familiar ize themselves with the literature there various pamphlets issued by industrial organizations setting forth programs and factual data will be found the same time to work himself into the dramatic department of the times mr van anda the manag cott got the job because he looked coott got the job because he looked like thackeray and wrote better than dickens you can't do much better in the way of a compliment came the war and off went young woollcott he observed a lot during his experience overseas and his war stories are still as fresh as the day he came back in the glitter and glare of broadway he again took up his pen as a full fledged dramatic critic he evident ly liked the job for he stuck to it on various newspapers until the first years of the great depression then just to be different he re tired his life since his retirement has not been one of utter boredoom he traveled to russia in moscow the natives marveled at his well-fed proportions and rode rickshas in peking he has also managed to turn out a few best-selling books notably while rome burns any body who has read these books doesn't wonder why he can get along in radio without a top-notch voice just what he will talk about monday evening is known to no one but himself but it's going to be a smart lecture if it's by smart alex woolcott brown and white bethlethem pa , friday october 23 1936 price — five cents play director club to entertain lehigh grid squad woollcott will open new series monday vol xliv no 8 medicals hear dr s rauch on fractures paths of glory will be given by cast of 50 all the lehigh news first member intercollegiate newspaper association

man be gan in 1914 when he became dram atic critic for the new york times he has since been associated with the new york papers the herald and the world among his writings are the comamnd is forward 1919 mr dickens goes to the play 1923 enchanted aisles 1924 the story of irving berlin 1925 while rome burns 1934 and the woollcott reader 1935 which contains what mr wooll coott considers some of the minor masterpieces of the literature of his own day he appeared on the stage of the belasco theater in new york in 1931 as harold sigrift in brief moment he gained recognition by his work with the columbia broad casting system he became famous as the town crier in 1935 his home is in new york city mr woollcott spent two years as an elisted man in the a e f including one year on the editoral council of the stars and stripes result of joint action this lecture and the entire pro gram series for the year comes as a direct result of the efforts of tau beta pi national honorary engin eering fraternity omicron delta kappa national honorary senior fraternity and the brown and white there is a joint committee of the faculty and students on the pro gram series the student commit tee was chosen by president c c williams sidney j lewis arts 37 is chairman while g b cur tis registrar is secretary of the committee other members of the commit tee are dr t edgar shields di rector of music editorial manager of the brown and white faculty read first lady a 1935 oldsmobile coupe driven by william sheppard e m 38 crashed head on into the wall in back of drown hall at 8 a m yes terday when sheppard swerved to avoid hitting another student who leaped into the path of the coupe from the running board of another vehicle the front of sheppard's car was badly smashed both fenders the radiator grating and the bumper being damaged no one was in jured while the leaders of the present administration have given them selves headaches looking for new things to tax to raise funds for relief wpa pwa and all other abc's some quiet investigator re alizing that there is nothing left to tax has discovered a new way to finance these economic fallacies at least we learn in our eco 3 course that they're fallacies this anonymous friend of the people's has unearthed several pennsylvania laws which if en forced would quickly raise substan tial sums for the administration to experiment with the laws namely sections 1227 2121 and 2152 of the election code limit as the ins so aptly put it the activities of elec tion outcome prognosticators to just plain prognasticating bets are tripled but where does all the money come in you ask section 2121 takes care of that by ruling that any person who makes any bet or wager upon the result of any election within this commonwealth . . . shall first lady a play by dayton and kaufman was read by the fac ulty dramatic club wednesday evening in packard laboratory mrs nelson hibshman presided over the meeting the group will meet again wednesday nov 4 at which time they expect to read ethan frome upon conviction thereof forfeit and pay to the state three times the amount so bet or offered to be bet when one considers that a harris burg electrical contractor has of fered 278,000 on roosevelt's win ning the election he can readily see that three times this amount would come to nearly one million dollars which incidentally is a good beginning for the new tax furthermore any person caught betting on elections in pennsylva nia can be disfranchised whatever that means no one convicted but allay your fears ye students who have wagered a week's allow ance and are already mentally fig uring that should the state request triple the amount you'll have to for feit all your houseparty money for the same anonymous investigator also announces that in the years and years and years of the laws existence there is not a single rec ord of anyone having been con victed for violating it oh well by s j lewis the worst voice in america — that's what some critics say about alexander woollcott his voice is thin and squeaky it doesn't have the richness and deep qualities of the best platform speakers but that hasn't stopped him from be com a star of radio and a popular public speaker throughout the na tion instead of succeeding through his vocal cords he has succeeded through his superlative story-tell ing abilities there are lots of men who can roll their rrrr's better than woollcott but few who can make a simple story more touching or poignant smart alex woollcott as jer ald mason magazine writer once called him has made a living since he left college by stringing words together better than anybody else he first talked himself into a job with the philadelphia record soon after his graduation from hamilton college he went the reportorial rounds for several years working his way into a position on the new york times he stuck in that field until 1922 he probably would still be with the times but an assign ment on the famous rosenthal case took so much out of him that he had to give up with the loss of two chins and one hundred pounds entered dramtics work he took some courses at colum bia the next year and managed at representatives of various com panies will be at lehigh soon to interview seniors stated a e mor gan director of the placement bu reau yesterday the desir on the part of the companies to make a preliminary survey of the situation is the rea son for the early sending of rep resentatives of last year's class of 241 grad uates only 9 are yet to be placed in some position mr morgan requests that the seniors pay a visit to the placement bureau office to familiar ize themselves with the literature there various pamphlets issued by industrial organizations setting forth programs and factual data will be found the same time to work himself into the dramatic department of the times mr van anda the manag cott got the job because he looked coott got the job because he looked like thackeray and wrote better than dickens you can't do much better in the way of a compliment came the war and off went young woollcott he observed a lot during his experience overseas and his war stories are still as fresh as the day he came back in the glitter and glare of broadway he again took up his pen as a full fledged dramatic critic he evident ly liked the job for he stuck to it on various newspapers until the first years of the great depression then just to be different he re tired his life since his retirement has not been one of utter boredoom he traveled to russia in moscow the natives marveled at his well-fed proportions and rode rickshas in peking he has also managed to turn out a few best-selling books notably while rome burns any body who has read these books doesn't wonder why he can get along in radio without a top-notch voice just what he will talk about monday evening is known to no one but himself but it's going to be a smart lecture if it's by smart alex woolcott brown and white bethlethem pa , friday october 23 1936 price — five cents play director club to entertain lehigh grid squad woollcott will open new series monday vol xliv no 8 medicals hear
