club last night in packard auditorium previous flights and the failure of the 1935 summer flight were also discussed motion pictures and slides were shown and their tech nical points were explained by cap tain williams being in charge of the ground ob servation captain williams was able to explain the workings of the instruments and the steps involved in launching the balloon the talk was opened by a dis cussion of previous army flights there are approximately 12 days in a year which are suitable for stratosphere flights from rapid city s d the point of origin of the ascensions the job of the through the selenium cell no practical use may be made of this energy except to revolve a small motor for demonstration pur poses but dr lange expressed the hope that his experiments would lead to an efficiency sufficient to provide energy for the world when fuel supplies have become ex hausted the fact that the current pro duced is proportional to the inten sity of the light permits the use of the cell as a smoke detector in fire alarm systems it can also be used to measure the concentration of a chemical solution even when the solution appears colorless to the naked eye dr lange is touring
