policy by the united states chamber of commerce dr neil carothers told the chamber at its final session for the year thurs day morning in washington that the present administration's policies have fallen far short of their goal speaking on economic prin ciples as they apply to present conditions dr carothers declared that the recovery program has not advanced recovery that the nra aaa and the monetary programs have reduced private investments and restricted production and that recovery will be promoted by relax ation of restriction regimentation and interference at this meeting the chamber of commerce voted on the resolutions which decided the policy of bus iness toward the governmental re covery program secretary of state cordell hull also addressed the group merriman to speak before a s c e will lecture on fort peck dam 7:30 p m thursday thaddeus merriman lecturer on hydraulics and water supply will speak on the fort peck dam at the meeting of the student chapter of the american society of civil engineers at 7:30 p m thursday in room 466 packard auditorium the dam is being built across the missouri river 20 miles southeast of glassgow mont it will cost 84,200,000 and will be 9,000 feet long across the crest with an addi tional 11,000 feet of dike the dam will be an hydraulic fill structure made of rock and gravel the fort peck dam is mainly a navigation project which upon com pletion will permit boats of nine foot draft to sail up the missouri river as far as sioux city lowa some power will be generated there however 168 preparatory high schools send representatives at the twenty-fifth annual meeting of the lehigh valley child helping con ference dr carothers stated that the birth rate of the families on relief was double that of the independent family dr carothers called the ccc camps the most successful of the present administration's relief works he named the public schools the noblest result of the present social order and recommended a system whereby each child is measured by his capacity jo learn dr stephen s wise followed dr carothers speaking on security for youth and a chance macnutt visits bethlehem barry macnutt professor of phy sics from 1915 to 1927 is spending several days in bethlehem mr macnutt whose home is in glouc ester mass was connected with the physics and electrical departments from 1899 until he left lehigh in 1927 williams hall armory library attract large crowds pi delta epsilon conducts information bureau be low the flag pole approximately 15,000 persons thronged the campus last friday afternoon and evening to witness the third annual open house it was characterized by prof fred v larkin chairman of the general committee as the most successful attempt ever made at putting le high on parade after a careful tabulation check up of the various buildings was made it was revealed that 13,964 persons actually passed through the various building entrances since there was a large number of early arrivals as well a consider able number were missed in the tabulation it can be said con servatively that the 15,000 mark was reached there were certain buildings and departments which counted a great er attendance than others notable among these were the armory housing the exhibits of the military department and the art gallery in the library bill hall attracts crowds williams hall also attracted large crowds so large in fact that at times passage through the aisles and halls was made only with con siderable difficulty dr trembley's snakes and the display of embryos were the exhibits which attracted most attention in this building journalism students sponsored several activities including a broad cast over station wcba an infor mation bureau was run under the direction of pi delta epsilon hon orary journalistic fraternity a po lice radio call system was operated in the brown and white office in christmas-saucon hall which am plified the program given in pack ard laboratory several other ex hibits dealing with the mechanics of journalism as well as a news bulletin were on display in the same office larkin thanks participants professor larkin in commenting on the event stated that he wished to thank heartily every student and every member of the faculty and administration who helped to make the 1935 open house such a com plete success without the cooper ation and support given by these groups open house would have been impossible he declared professor larkin praised the work done by captain tow of the military department who was in charge of the student police work and john maxwell chairman of the committee on coordination as in strumental in eliminating conflicts and possible accident to the valuable equipment placed on display he concluded that putting le library williams hall and coppee hall were affected being without lighting facilities over the week-end except for some lights on other circuits the transformer was replaced yesterday due to lack of lighting the library was closed on sunday evening to retire from presidency prof percy hughes head of the department of philosophy will re tire as president of the fullerton philosophical club at sat urday morning in palmerton at the twenty-fifth annual meeting of the lehigh valley child helping con ference dr carothers stated that the birth rate of the families on relief was double that of the independent family dr carothers called the ccc camps the most successful of the present administration's relief works he named the public schools the noblest result of the present social order and recommended a system whereby each child is measured by his capacity jo learn dr stephen s wise followed dr carothers speaking on security for youth and a chance macnutt visits bethlehem barry macnutt professor of phy sics from 1915 to 1927 is spending several days in bethlehem mr macnutt whose home is in glouc ester mass was connected with the physics and electrical departments from 1899 until he left lehigh in 1927 williams hall armory library attract large crowds pi delta epsilon conducts information bureau be low the flag pole approximately 15,000 persons thronged the campus last friday afternoon and evening to witness the third annual open house it was characterized by prof fred v larkin chairman of the general committee as the most successful attempt ever made at putting le high on parade after a careful tabulation check up of the various buildings was made it was revealed that 13,964 persons actually passed through the various building entrances since there was a large number of early arrivals as well a consider able number were missed in the tabulation it can be said con servatively that the 15,000 mark was reached there were certain buildings and departments which counted a great er attendance than others notable among these were the armory housing the exhibits of the military department and the art gallery in the library bill hall attracts crowds williams hall also attracted large crowds so large in fact that at times passage through the aisles and halls was made only with con siderable difficulty dr trembley's snakes and the display of embryos were the exhibits which attracted most attention in this building journalism students sponsored several activities including a broad cast over station wcba an infor mation bureau was run under the direction of pi delta epsilon hon orary journalistic fraternity a po lice radio call system was operated in the brown and white office in christmas-saucon hall which am plified the program given in pack ard laboratory several other ex hibits dealing with the mechanics of journalism as well as a news bulletin were on display in the same office larkin thanks participants professor larkin in commenting on the event stated that he wished to thank heartily every student and every member of the faculty and administration who helped to make the 1935 open house such a com plete success without the cooper ation and support given by these groups open house would have been impossible he declared professor larkin praised the work done by captain tow of the military department who was in charge of the student police work and john maxwell chairman of the committee on coordination as in strumental in eliminating conflicts and possible accident to the valuable equipment placed on display he concluded
