this year's epitome will contain several new features including larg er pictures in the senior section and photographs of some of the more prominent undergraduates the year book will contain pen and ink sketches of the fraternity houses instead of photographs as in for mer years a separate section will be devoted to the faculty and administration in this section will be the pet sayings of the faculty a ten page feature section composed of photographs will be included society takes 13 new men 450 will attend press meeting will address a s m e 7:30 p m thursday the entire field of shipbuilding will be the subject of a talk by h e gould general manager of the fall river plant of the bethlehem shipbuilding corporation at the meeting of the student branch of the american society of mechanical engineers at 7:30 p m thursday in room 466 packard laboratory the talk which according to mr gould will be informative but non technical will be entitled the building of a ship and will deal with design plans materials fab rication installations testing and operation he will also discuss ship yard management and its problems methods planning and safety work mr gould who is located at quincy mass has been connected with the fall river plant for the past 32 years for 24 of which he has been an executive of the plant having been head of the outside en gineering department superinten dent of machinery general super intendent and general manager previous to his connection with the plant he served in the engineering department of the u s navy during the world war when mr gould was the general superinten dent of works manager of the plant over 16,000 men were employed in building 37 destroyers will address joint banquet 186 high and preparatory schools are represent ed by prospectives most favor chemistry visitors from eight states and one district were among the 416 pros pective students who registered on sub-freshman day saturday the guests represented 158 high schools and 28 preparatory schools the number of guests exceeds that of last year by 21 the states represented were con necticut 6 delaware 3 district of columbia 1 maryland 1 massachu setts 6 new jersey 143 new york 68 pennsylvania 187 and virginia 1 about 229 parents alumni and friends accompanied the prospective students the guests registered in the alumni memorial building from 9 to 10:30 a m after which they as sembled in packard auditorium where they were welcomed by pres ident c c williams on behalf of the university visitors tour grounds after the general assembly the visitors were conducted on tours of the buildings and grounds the re spective departments discussed their curricula with those men interested and presented exhibits displaying the work of the students the registration according to cur ricula interests showed 92 men fav oring mechanical and industrial en gineering 39 in electrical engineer ing 110 in chemistry and chemical engineering 14 in metallurgical en gineering 8 in engineering physics 28 in civil and sanitary engineering 6 in mining engineering 50 in the arts college and 69 in the college of business administration lunch in armory at noon the visitors had luncheon in the armory as guests of the uni versity in the afternoon they re turned to further inspect the var ious departments until 2:30 p m when they met at the flag-pole phi beta kappa's dean christian gauss of prince ton university will speak on two economies at the annual banquet of the phi beta kappa chapters of lehigh and lafayette at 6:45 p m wednesday in the accordance with the old custom of alternating it between bethlehem and easton friends and relatives of the mem bers will also attend faculty rejects request to set definite date of easter holiday new re-exam dates set one vote defeated the student pe tition to change the spring vacation from easter to mid-semester at the faculty meeting yesterday after noon the petition defeated was written to have the vacation of the second semester set as a certain week not contingent on the date of easter and to continue from one saturday to the monday following a week later instead of from thursday to thursday > schedules june re-exams an experimental ruling was adopt ed for this year only whereby any student having an e in any course incurred during the present acad emic year will have the privilege of taking the re-examination june 25 26 27 and the morning of june 29 instead of september the purpose of this plan is to enable students who plan to go to summer school to study for the examination and take it in advance of the summer session a ruling concerning incompletes was also adopted by faculty action this ruling states that a student who incures an incomplete in any course and fails to remove the in complete within one calendar year loses all equity in the course and consequently if the course is requir ed will have to repeat it summer employment dropped the faculty member initiated in 1886 by prof e h williams the founder of the society mr heikes spoke about the founding of tau beta pi and its past history robert c h heck 93 one of the first members of the national council of tau beta pi spoke on early experiences with professor williams and the expansion of the fraternity the last speaker of the evening was harry t morris 91 who pro posed the the sides of the auditorium and the cutting through of a door to make the east side of christmas-saucon hall accessible from the new balcony the purpose of the work is to make both sides of the building available to students without neces sitating their interrupting lectures which may be going on in the audi torium previous to this time it has been necessary when going from one side of the building to the other to come in one door of the auditorium and walk down through the center aisle when the construc tion work is finished it will be pos sible to get from one side of the building to advertising this is the first time in the his tory of the association that any pa per has had possession of all three cups first place in the news con test was a tie between the brown and white and the temple univer sity news since the news had held the cup since the fall convention ac tual possession of the cup was given to the brown and white the names of both papers will be inscribed on the priscilla alden west chester state teachers college secretary duquesne enters conference the duquesne university duke was elected to the association whose membership remained at 34 when the cooper member initiated in 1886 by prof e h williams the founder of the society mr heikes spoke about the founding of tau beta pi and its past history robert c h heck 93 one of the first members of the national council of tau beta pi spoke on early experiences with professor williams and the expansion of the fraternity the last speaker of the evening was harry t morris 91 who pro posed the application of engineering methods to solutions of national problems c b welch newly-elected chap ter president spoke on the future of the organization the rest of the officers will be elected at the next meeting of the society meets 8 seniors credits for cheerleaders interfraternity council and pre-meds changed a e d is recognized three changes were made in the point system by which cyanide junior honorary activities society elects its members the changes were made at a dinnef meeting of the society held last week at the delta upsilon house the changes made are the allow ance of two points for junior cheer leaders the deduction of one point from the allowance for membership in the interfraternity council set ting the new allowance at two points and the allowance of one point for membership in alpha ep silon delta national pre-medical so ciety the point system used by cyan ide is as follows seven points 3.5 average up to the time of election varsity letter or sufficient time completed by the mid dle of next week announced an drew w litzenberger superinten dent of buildings and grounds the work being done is the construction of a balcony connecting the two balconies along the sides of the auditorium and the cutting through of a door to make the east side of christmas-saucon hall accessible from the new balcony the purpose of the work is to make both sides of the building available to students without neces sitating their interrupting lectures which may be going on in the audi torium previous to this time it has been necessary when going from one side of the building to the other to come in one door of the auditorium and walk down through the center aisle when the construc tion work is finished it will be pos sible to get from one side of the building to
