added to the collection of letters from all but two presidents which are on exhibition in the treasure room of the library will present variety night william g billy mccaa who died last saturday was the official lehigh photographer for 32 years and during four of these years he served as a professor of chemistry here mr mccaa first came to bethle hem in 1901 and after several years in business he was named in structor of photo - chemistry a course for senior chemical engin eers he served under prof wil liam h chandler formerly head of the department of chemistry until the latter's death in 1906 at that time the course in photo-chemistry was discontinued mr mccaa continued to serve as official photographer however un til his death all photographs in the epitome during this time have been by the mccaa studios these stu dios will be continued by mr mc caa's oldest son david j mccaa william donald mccaa another son is taking a business course at lehigh and is a member of the class of 36 he is a member of the varsity football team studied classical music mr mccaa was 60 years old he was a native of lancaster county and received his education there his father wished him to become a doctor but this work did not ap peal to him and upon the sugges tion of his mother he took up the study of classical music he special ized in the violin later he became interested in chemistry and photo graphy and moved to south beth lehem he bought the photography establishment of emil schrempel on adams street and went into business shortly after leaving lehigh he sold his original business and d u to hold fete tonight will celebrate fiftieth anniversary of chap ter's origin banquet about 80 alumni of the lehigh chapter of delta upsilon fraternity are expected to attend the fiftieth anniversary banquet of the chapter at 7 o'clock this evening at the saucon valley country club john killmer 23 now engaged in research metallurgy for the bethlehem steel company will be master of ceremonies and r m eichner president of the house will welcome the guests and speak in behalf of the undergraduates freeman galpin a member of the faculty of syracuse university is to be the speaker he is the author of one hundred years of delta up silon three of the surviving charter members are to be guests o*f honor these men all graduates of the class of 1888 are h s miner chief chemist of the welsbach company arid inventor of the welsbach gas mantle c s parker superinten dent of the new york central lines and h s morrow president of the morrow-smith company of wilkensburg unable to attend another living charter member is c p pollack who is at present on the west coast and is unable to attend the celebration it is expect ed that some officers of the national fraternity will on wed nesday evening in the sayre obser vatory after the regular meeting the members of the society under the direction of ralph n van arnam instructor in astronomy and mathe matics turned the telescope to ve nus mars jupiter and the bee hive star cluster in preparation for this evening's open house exhibit the club made plans to meet the day of registration to arrange sche dules into which an astronomy course could be inserted operation of placement office may be watched by visitors the placement office in the alumni memorial building will be open for those visitors who may be lecture on induction melting and heat trea ing at the pre-sectional meeting of the lehigh valley chapter of the american society for metals monday evening at 8 p m in wil liams hall in his talk major bull will ex plain high frequency induction fur naces for the melting of steel he will also describe certain features of induction equipment that lend themselves satisfactorily to heat treatment and to the heating of sol id objects that receive an applica tion of paint lacquer or other ma terial for protective purposes need ing to be dried or baked as a final casting operation major bull is well known as a consultant on steel castings and has had wide experience as inspec tor works-manager vice president and general manager of steel foun dry companies he was the recip ient of the joseph s seaman gold medal in 1927 for contributions to the foundry industry and is a past president of the american foundry men's association he received the rank of major in the ordnance de partment of the united states army dr northup who received an honorary doctor of science degree from lehigh in 1932 for inventions in pyrometers and furnaces will also attend the meeting and will an swer questions banquet to be here next year eleven of the newly initiated members of phi beta kappa na tional honorary scholarship society journey to easton last evening to attend the annual initiatio banquet held in conjunction with the lafay ette chapter of phi beta kappa the banquet was held at the hotel easton the fraternity was addressed by dr corwin profesor of history at princeton dr corwin spoke on the constitution of the united states he contends that the constitution is itself unconstiutional and that it has no more value as a law than the decisions of the supreme court in accordance with the policy of rotating the place of holding the banquet it will be held some place in bethlehem next year new members attend the new members attending were william bamert bus paul budura arts thomas secretary and prof r b cowin treasurer j.m toohy breaks pelvis in accident associate in languages gets hurt in auto accident john m toohy associate profes sor of romance languages received a fracture of a bone in the pelvic region during the easter holidays when he was struck by a truck near his summer home at new milford conn professor toohy his family and mr fame an instructor in romance languages were spending the holi days at his home it was while mr toohy was on his way to visit his neighbors that the truck driven by an intoxicated motorist struck him professor toohy was taken to the new milford hospital where x-rays revealed the fracture he is not ex pected to be able to meet his classes during the rest of the semester they have been divided among the members of his department grocery clerk attends lehigh for four years with only 10 professor hibshman and haring to conduct small groups on tour of grounds buildings visitors will have luncheon at armory then see games lehigh will entertain more than 400 prospective students tomorrow in the annual sub-freshman day exercises according to andrew e buchanan general chairman of the committee in charge and john w maxwell who is assisting him the program for the day is sim ilar to that of last year it in cludes tours registration and in the afternoon four sports events the committee has profited by the ex perience in previous years says maxwell and we feel that the present set up will be the best ever registration of guests in the fac ulty room of the alumni memorial building will be held from 9 to 10:30 a m about 50 upperclass men under the supervision of pro fessors hibshmann and haring are to conduct small groups on a tour of the buildings and grounds fraternity men represented this group of guides includes representatives of all the fraternity houses and members of arcadia after the general assembly at the packard laboratory auditorium vis itors will report to the rooms in the laboratory to which they were as signed when they registered here they will meet faculty guides who will conduct them to points of es pecial interest around the campus rooms which the various depart ments will the leaders of six lehigh valley college singing groups represent ing 250 voices had planned for this spring has been cancelled states kent s putnam manager of the combined musical clubs the six choruses will not be available at one time or any day during the rest of the school sem ester is the reason for the cancella tion of the concert putnam stated that he will ask the leaders of the friend came to philadelphia and asked him why he was not in some college when told of his lack of funds his friend a bethlehem tailor told of the oppor tunities offered at lehigh gives opinion of college in my town vare i come from der's a college vot lets you go four years study vat you like and after vards yen you're all finished and successful you can pay dem back and dey don't even esk interest stated his friend the tailor on his return to beth lehem took up ettleman's case with a professor who wrote and asked him to come to lehigh and look the place over the invitation was ac cepted and with 10 in his pock et mr ettleman set out for col lege on sept 27 he arrived in beth lehem and entered the offices of dr drinker natt emery and sev eral others after stating his case he was informed that the univer sity occasionally gave help to stu dents who proved themselves de serving after his first year in le high the thought of giving up never occurred to ettleman he held his ground until finally dr drinker called upon his former math pro fessor received good recqmmenda tions and consented to take a chance with him dr natt emery gave him his registration card asked him what course he wanted to take and found out to his surprise that ettleman did not know what course he wanted after dr emery told him of the courses lehigh offered he chose civil engineering pays first year's tuition mr ettleman was able to honor his notes for the first year's tuition through his own efforts before the beginning of his sophomore year and continued thereafter on his own he is now a banquet to be here next year eleven of the newly initiated members of phi beta kappa na tional honorary scholarship society journey to easton last evening to attend the annual initiatio banquet held in conjunction with the lafay ette chapter of phi beta kappa the banquet was held at the hotel easton the fraternity was addressed by dr corwin profesor of history at princeton dr corwin spoke on the constitution of the united states he contends that the constitution is itself unconstiutional and that it has no more value as a law than the decisions of the supreme court in accordance with the policy of rotating the place of holding the banquet it will be held some place in bethlehem next year new members attend the new members attending were william bamert bus paul budura arts thomas of a bone in the pelvic region during the easter holidays when he was struck by a truck near his summer home at new milford conn professor toohy his family and mr fame an instructor in romance languages were spending the holi days at his home it was while mr toohy was on his way to visit his neighbors that the truck driven by an intoxicated motorist struck him professor toohy was taken to the new milford hospital where x-rays revealed the fracture he is not ex pected to be able to meet his classes during the rest of the semester they have been divided among the members of his friend came to philadelphia and asked him why he was not in some college when told of his lack of funds his friend a bethlehem tailor told of the oppor tunities offered at lehigh gives opinion of interest stated his friend the tailor on his return to beth lehem took up ettleman's case with a professor who wrote and asked him to come to lehigh and look the place over the invitation was ac cepted and with 10 in his pock et mr ettleman set out for col lege on sept 27 he arrived in beth lehem and entered the offices of dr drinker natt emery and sev eral others after stating his case he was informed that the univer sity occasionally gave help to stu dents who proved themselves de serving after his first year in le high the thought of giving up never occurred to ettleman he held his ground until finally dr drinker called upon his former math pro fessor received good recqmmenda tions and consented to take a chance with him dr natt emery gave him his registration card asked him what course he wanted to take and found out to his surprise that ettleman did not know what course he wanted after dr emery told him of the courses lehigh offered he chose civil engineering pays first year's tuition mr ettleman was able to honor his notes for the first year's tuition through his own efforts before the beginning of his sophomore year and continued thereafter on his own he is now a
