the fiftieth annual in itiation and banquet held on friday april 12 this group was the larg est in the society's history the ritual ceremonies took place in packard laboratory following which the new members joined the old members and some guests in a formal banquet at the sun inn ernst b schulz associate profes sor of history was the speaker he discussed some of the duties of an engineer in his social sphere by p e p white historical dramas are not as a rule remarkable they are apt to follow a rather fixed design mus tard and cheese's yellow jack was nothing if not remarkable uni que staging and an ambitious cast provided an unsual evening for those who filled drown hall audi torium friday and saturday for some it surpassed jour ney's end and outward bound others puzzled by the peculiar technique employed were not as ap proving black-out scene-shifting and suggestive props detracted slightly from the action simply be cause they were not conventional they were not enough however to steal the interest from the charac ters themselves that interest nearly ran away with the audience some of the heroic symbolism of the play was lost beneath the humor incident to the action in its attempt to main tain suspense the play was kept at too high a pitch was too intensely dramatic the effect was to tire an audience which — in the first place — was inclined to favor something lighter leading men excellent not that the actors may be eas ily blamed those who had the strong parts were in almost every case admirable david bradley and roy hertz playing carroll and agra monte were excellent bill hutch inson as lazear despite a tendency to overact was quite as good as his reputation harold towne cast as major reed was the only disap pointment and as a central charac ter was far from outstanding john mccomb and roger wol cott as soldiers were responsible for much of the comic relief and did well friday night there was a tendency for some of the players to rush their lines sacrificing clarity of words for emotional action jack williamson playing stacpoole and hertz were the chief offenders scotty cornelius made an accep table last-minute substitute for bill maynard in the part of william dean edward land fitted major gorgas direction is commendable noticeable by its absence was the affectation of an english accent which detracted from journey's end and might have spoiled the london and south african scenes in yellow jack in general the direction deserves high commenda tion not a hitch spoiled the smoothness of the scene-changing not a missed lighting cue was no ticeable tents laboratories and hospitals were created and disap peared as silently and quickly as the actors in them bethlehem pa tuesday april 16 1935 two cups won by brown and white price five cents brown and white vol xlii no 47 phi eta sigma taps fifteen during chapel to decorate junior prom with flowers students ask model league for revision brown to talk on dinosaurs for sigma xi member members joined the old members and some guests in a formal banquet at the sun inn ernst b schulz associate profes sor of history was the speaker he discussed some of the duties of an engineer in his social sphere by p e p white historical dramas are not as a rule remarkable they are apt to follow a rather fixed design mus tard and cheese's yellow jack was nothing if not remarkable uni que staging and an ambitious cast provided an unsual evening for those who filled drown hall audi torium friday and saturday for some it surpassed jour ney's end and outward bound others puzzled by the peculiar technique employed were not as ap proving black-out scene-shifting and suggestive props detracted slightly from the action simply be cause they were not conventional they were not enough however to steal the interest from the charac ters themselves that interest nearly ran away with the audience some of the heroic symbolism of the play was lost beneath the humor incident to the action in its attempt to main tain suspense the play was kept at too high a pitch was too intensely dramatic the effect was to tire an audience which — in the first place — was inclined to favor something lighter leading men excellent not that the actors may be eas ily blamed those who had the strong parts were in almost every case admirable david bradley and roy hertz playing carroll and agra monte were excellent bill hutch inson as lazear despite a tendency to overact was quite as good as his reputation harold towne cast as major reed was the only disap pointment and as a central charac ter was far from outstanding john mccomb and roger wol cott as soldiers were responsible for much of the comic relief and did well friday night there was a tendency for some of the players to rush their lines sacrificing clarity of words for emotional action jack williamson playing stacpoole and hertz were the chief offenders scotty cornelius made an accep table last-minute substitute for bill maynard in the part of william dean edward land fitted major gorgas direction is commendable noticeable by its absence was the affectation of an english accent which detracted from journey's end and might have spoiled the london and south african scenes in yellow jack in general the direction deserves high commenda tion not a hitch spoiled the smoothness of the scene-changing not a missed lighting cue was
