number 354 men were fraternity members 61 dormi tory residents and 205 members of town groups the percentage of men receiving valentines has shown a slight rise over the past two years the 1 letter awards at an nual banquet rudolph ashman lehigh's e i w a 126-lb champion was elect ed captain of next year's wrestling team at their twelfth annual banquet which was held last night at the saucon valley country club the banquet is presented annual ly by r a lewis vice president of the bethlehem steel company in honor of the varsity and freshman wrestling teams and their coach billy sheridan walter okeson chairman of the national football rules committee served as master of ceremonies for the evening after the dinner okey introduced president wil liams who commended the team on its splendid record and stated that he was keenly interested in lehigh's athletic program sheridan praises scobey the man who was the main rea son for lehigh's success was then called upon and billy sheridan rose and spoke briefly on the national wrestling tournament which was held last friday and saturday at washington and lee lexington va billy paid scobey a wonderful tribute and then spoke to the mem bers of the freshman team about the responsibility which they face when they join the varsity ranks next year colonel kellogg dean mcconn glenn harmeson bosey reiter and austin bishop coach of wyoming seminary's wrestling team and bro ther of both ben and dick also ad dressed those attending the banquet howell scobey was presented with a gold watch by mr lewis as his gift to lehigh's captain of both football and wrestling during the 1935-36 season howell expressed his appreciation and took advantage of this opportunity to offer to billy sheridan the team's gift a new trout fishing rod so that their coach might enjoy his spare time to good advantage lettermen announced the retiring manager of wrestl ing bill hoddinott read the list of men who received varsity letters for their upper quar ter of the junior class in electrical engineering are eligible for election o gramley talks of hoaxes dale h gramley associate pro fessor of journalism talked to the students of lincoln high school jersey city n j yesterday morn ing on newspaper hoaxes and frauds dr edwin r theis associate professor of chemical engineering conducted investigations as techni cal expert on evidence for the pros ecution in the weird murder of mrs viola e moore of altoona the defendant pauo m strawmeyer a sailor was acquitted because of a lack of concrete evidence the testimony revealed that mrs moore was slain by a unique device known as the navy roll which broke her neck the device which was produced in evidence consist ed of a basket like headgear to which was attached ten feet of strong wire and a short stick an inch in diameter the wire was attached to the headgear and then looped about the victim's heels the stick was insert ed in the wire and twisted in tourni quet fashion until her neck broke the police found parts of the cel luloid covering of mrs moore's heels in the ledge of the seat of a car which the defendant was driv ing when arrested these flaky pieces and the shoes of the victim which were found wrapped in wire near the body were brought here to be chemically tested and compared by dr theis dr theis testified that the flakes exactly matched the celluloid on the heels the state contended that straw meyer after a quarrel at a drinking party in altoona last december took mrs moore to a nearby alley where the cruel torturing murder was committed strawmeyer admitted that he ac companied mrs moore on visits to beer parlors and on a long ride in the country the night she was killed but he insisted he drove her home afterwards he denied they quar reled previously mrs dewey ermine wife of a night club proprietor and betty shraff a waitress testified that strawmeyer and mrs moore visited their establishment that night drank several bottles of beer and that mrs moore sang and danced causing an argument with strawmeyer as the couple left mrs ermine said that mrs moore turned to those who remained at the inn and called goodbye folks if we meet again i hope it'll be in heaven it was in an alleyway near the inn that her body was found next morning dr theis who testified on fri day was asked to conduct the in vestigation by state authorities these authorities applied to the endicott-johnson shoe company's offices in new york the shoe com pany recommended the lehigh chemistry department dr theis went to hollidaysburg on thursday and returned on saturday he is still of the opinion that strawmeyer committed the crime although he contends that the crime was not premedidated metallurgist will describe iron steel inspection inspection of iron and saucon valley country club the banquet is presented annual ly by r a lewis vice president of the bethlehem steel company in honor of the varsity and freshman wrestling teams and their coach billy sheridan walter okeson chairman of the national football rules committee served as master of ceremonies for the evening after the dinner okey introduced president wil liams who commended the team on its splendid record and stated that he was keenly interested in lehigh's athletic program sheridan praises scobey the man who was the main rea son for lehigh's success was then called upon and billy sheridan rose and spoke briefly on the national wrestling tournament which was held last friday and saturday at washington and lee lexington va billy paid scobey a wonderful tribute and then spoke to the mem bers of the freshman team about the responsibility which they face when they join the varsity ranks next year colonel kellogg dean mcconn glenn harmeson bosey reiter and austin bishop coach of high school jersey city n j yesterday morn ing on newspaper hoaxes and frauds dr edwin r theis associate professor of chemical engineering conducted investigations as techni cal expert on evidence for the pros ecution in the weird murder of mrs viola e moore of altoona the defendant pauo m strawmeyer a sailor was acquitted because of a lack of concrete evidence the testimony revealed that mrs moore was slain by a unique device known as the navy roll which broke her neck the device which was produced in evidence consist ed of a basket like headgear to which was attached ten feet of strong wire and a short stick an inch in diameter the wire was attached to the headgear and then looped about the victim's heels the stick was insert ed in the wire and twisted in tourni quet fashion until her neck broke the police found parts of the cel luloid covering of mrs moore's heels in the ledge of the seat of a car which the defendant was driv ing when arrested these flaky pieces and the shoes of the victim which were found wrapped in wire near the body were brought here to be chemically tested and compared by dr theis dr theis testified that the flakes exactly matched the celluloid on the heels the state contended that straw meyer after a quarrel at a drinking party in altoona last december took mrs moore to a nearby alley where the cruel torturing murder was committed strawmeyer admitted that he ac companied mrs moore on visits to beer parlors and on a long ride in the country the night she was killed but he insisted he drove her home afterwards he denied they quar reled previously mrs dewey ermine wife of a night club proprietor and betty shraff a waitress testified that strawmeyer and mrs moore visited their establishment that night drank several bottles of beer and that mrs moore sang and danced causing an argument with strawmeyer as the couple left mrs ermine said that mrs moore turned to those who remained at the inn and called goodbye folks if we meet again i hope it'll be in heaven it was in an alleyway near the inn that her body was found next morning dr theis who testified on fri day was asked to conduct the in vestigation by state authorities these authorities applied to the endicott-johnson shoe company's offices in new york the shoe com pany recommended the lehigh chemistry department dr theis went to hollidaysburg on thursday and returned on
