board expresses regret at president's retirement walter r okeson secretary of the board of trustees issued the following statement in acceding to president richards repeated suggestion that he be relieved of his heavy responsibilities the board of trustees faced a conflict of emo tions on the one hand was the con viction that lehigh would suf fer an irreparable loss on the other hand was the feeling in spired by deep personal affection for dr richards that he should consider his own health first and his job afterwards finally however realizing that the president was genuine ly worried over the possibility that his partial incapacity might impede the progress of the uni versity the board reluctantly agreed to allow dr richards to announce his retirement charles russ richards m.m.e sc.d ll.d eng.d w e lingelbach to speak june 11 regretfully — farewell in the resignation of president richards lehigh suf fers a loss which can never be replaced students who knew him were filled with respect admiration and faith in this man both for himself and for his great achievements in the upbuilding of lehigh university even those students who never came in contact with him realized that here was a man whose untiring efforts had put lehigh at the top of america's educational institutions and that accordingly they were indebted to him beyond hope of repayment president richards was an engineer but he was more v than just an engineer he was a humanitarian and held j high the ideals of art culture and all of the finer things in / life he set an example that every lehigh student can aim for but few achieve while he dreamed of well equipped buildings and laboratories for engineering work at the same time he planned for a more beautiful campus a larg er library and a broadening of the engineering curricula to develop the cultural side of the university and the stu ( dent to describe the character the vision the broadness of c president richards is an impossible task but the growth of / lehigh university in the past 1 2 years indicates to some ex ! tent this quiet yet powerful this visionary yet practical / man who placed lehigh's star in the ascendancy his first great achievement was his program for a greater lehigh " which resulter in the raising of two and a half million dollars to provide funds for the projected improvements continuing his original objective president richards devoted the ensuing 1 2 years of his administra tion to the materialization of his ambitious plans carefully wisely courageously he planned and worked strengthen ing the faculty revising educational procedure initiating research remodeling buildings setting up an efficient sys tem of business management — in short making lehigh university a nationally recognized institution of the highest caliber as the prestige of the university increased the stu dent enrollment grew rapidly increasing 50 per cent the faculty too was increased nearly 50 per cent the value of plant and equipment was doubled and the endowment funds were more than doubled every phase of the uni versity's activity flourished and even during the depression years president richards talent for business management enabled the university to operate without a deficit at any time this unique record a ar»©ng american colleges was made withoutjredwiingqhje 5 scate'of salaries without reduc in^ti*e\sii|ii,aim:rfe faculty beyond the proportionate drop s"*esiroltment without allowing plant or equipment of the university to fall below its high standards as a result lehigh's enrollment has an attempt to re-count it would fill many pages to those who know him the story of his achievements will indicate the unselfish devo tion the untiring efforts the patient unswerving idealism and the lawyer minis ter and educator robert alexan der lamberton the third president was a lawyer thomas messinger drown the fourth president was a medical doctor and professor of chemistry henry sturgis drinker fifth president and now president emeritus was a mining engineer and a lawyer charles russ richards the last of the six is a mechanical engineer and an educator coppee taught literature henry coppee for whom coppee hall is named was professor of belles lettres english literature at the university of pennsylvania when on nov 4 1865 the trustees decided to tender him the office of president he accepted and on april 1 1865 took office ten years later in 1875 he re signed the presidency but remained here with the modest title of pro fessor of english literature inter national and constitutional law and philosophy of history he held this position until his death but on three occasions he was acting president the first time until his successor could be chosen the second dur ing the interim between the resig nation of president leavitt and the installation of mr lamberton and the third from 1893 to his death on march 21 1895 he is buried in nisky hill cemetery leavitt was second president john m leavitt the second pres ident of lehigh has the distinction of resigning that office to become president of st john's college an napolis mr he was born in 1824 at steubensville ohio at the age of 17 he was graduat ed from jefferson college he then studied law and practiced for four years in 1848 he became an epis copal minister he taught at ken yon college and later at ohio uni versity before coming to lehigh robert a lamberton was born april 26 1824 at carlisle pa he was graduated from dickinson col lege in 1843 and later studied law at harrisburg where he gained a state-wide reputation in 1871 he became a trustee of lehigh and in 1880 he was made president of the university he was the first pres ident who had no teaching duties he died on sept 1 1893 the first established by the class of 1878 in 1875 as a sophomore publication illness is reason for giv ing up position is not fully recovered from recent heart attack special committee of board appointed to find successor president will retire august 31 ; came to lehigh in 1922 from university of illinois president richards has resigned the resignation of charles russ richards as president of the uni versity was accepted at a special meeting of the board of trustees tuesday afternoon in the office of eugene g grace president of the board in new york city dr richards who was in educa tional work 42 years suffered a se vere heart attack last august and has not yet fully recovered for the past two months he has assumed part of his duties but his physician feels that it would be hazardous for him to take up his full duties a special committee of the board was appointed to find a successor to dr richards members of the committee are eugene g grace chairman samuel d warriner william c dickerman howard h mcclintic and walter r okeson secretary of the committee university his great concern the president placed the welfare of the university before his own health in resigning several times during the past year he has asked the board of trustees to allow him to resign rather than let him con tinue in a partial capacity and run the risk of letting the university suffer the board finally
