By AUBREY DETTERLINE The Greenway Path, a project aimed at connecting the South Side with the university and creating a green space in the city, is underway but currently has no definite completion date. The path is going to have different zones: Greenway West, Central, East and South. Steph DeLuca, ’11, became involved with the Greenway project this summer when she interned at Bethlehem’s Chamber of Commerce. “I was shown the importance of community relations and was excited when I became actively involved with a few other girls in my public relations class,” she said. “As a group, we decided that it would be a fun and worthwhile project to take on.” While many agree this is a worthwhile project, DeLuca said the main problem with the project’s elongated completion is funding. “A student group from Professor Jim Harper’s public relations class is acting as the public relations team for the ILE [Integrated Learning Experience] group in hopes to spread the word of the Greenway project on Lehigh’s campus,” said Megan Donelan, ’11. She said there have been promotional speeches at several events this year, and fliers have been posted. The group’s initial marketing steps took place at the annual Halloween 5K in downtown Bethlehem. In preparation for this event, the group stuffed each runner’s participant bag with fliers, and on the day of the event, representatives were there to talk to anyone who had any questions or concerns regarding the project. In regard to speaking opportunities on Lehigh’s campus, the group was able to have members from ILE speak at the annual Black-Out, Lights-Out event, which was part of Green Week/International Week sponsored by Green Action and the Global Union. “Facebook and Twitter pages are being constructed at this time and will be launched after the Thanksgiving break for the public,” Donelan said. “We are hoping that the more we are able to help the ILE group spread the word about the Greenway Project, the more support they will receive from the Lehigh and greater Bethlehem community.” Students at Lehigh seem pretty eager to utilize the path and have a good place to run. Amanda Phillips, ’12, said she enjoys running and can’t wait to have a nice place to run with her roommate. “I think the Greenway project sounds awesome,” she said. “It’s really close to campus, which is nice, and there will be pretty scenery to look at as well.” Meghann Barber, ’12, agreed with Phillips and said she’s really excited for the path because it will give her a change of scenery when she runs and the chance to explore more of Bethlehem.
