this morning these men had paid 207.50 in fines of 7.50 and 12.50 banner theft opened feud the initial action which brought about renewed hostilities between lehigh and lafayette after six years of peace began shortly after 3 a m thursday when approxi mately 125 lafayette students in 21 cars entered the lehigh campus and centered their attack on the beat lafayette banner which ex tended between the two wings of the taylor dormitory a statement from lafayette indi cates that the raid came as an an swer to dares sent to them by an apparent lehigh student who told them of the existence of the ban ner and challenged them to remove it the latter story corroborated in part a rumor that the men held in the attempted robbery of the sup ply bureau had hoped to force a lehigh-lafayette fight to cover continued on page four complete support of the 1926 ar cadia-k.r.t resolution against le high-lafayette hostilities and a restraint of any mass action against lafayette for its invasion of taylor dormitories was voted last night at an emergency meeting of arca dia in a lengthy discussion of the peace pact formulated in 1926 by arcadia and knights of the round table the lafayette senior-junior honorary society one faction of the meeting was of the opinion that la fayette had violated the resolution by invading the lehigh campus and taking the banner strung across taylor hall another group was of the opinion that the lafayette stu dent body was ignorant of the joint resolution it was pointed out that the k.r t yesterday made all efforts pos sible to avoid further trouble be tween the schools through print ing copies of the resolution and posting them on all lafayette bul letin boards one of the purposes of the meet ing was to make every living group acquainted with the resolution in order to discourage lehigh stu dents from breaking the gentle men's agreement made in 1926 possible termination of the le high-lafayette football series was hinted by officials of both schools today as a result of student rioting this week dean c m mcconn issued a statement to this effect shortly aft er he had suspended 56 lehigh stu dents who were arrested by eas ton and bethlehem police during rioting maneuvers early this morn ing the dean's statement indicates that president richards and dean arthur a hauck of lafayette con cur in favoring the termination of football rivalry in event distur bances should break out tonight or tomorrow in addition to the 56 men sus pended this morning other suspen sions are expected in the case of students who participated in the in vasion of the lafayette campus this morning the 56 suspensions made today are for a period of one week or un til after the thanksgiving holidays in addition the students have been placed on disciplinary probation for the balance of the academic year refuse bail by mcconn of the 56 men 29 were confined in the easton jail and 27 in bethle hem those jailed in this city were released at an early hour this morning on bail furnished by dean mcconn but many of the students arrested in easton were not re leased until late this morning be cause of the refusal of the easton authorities to accept dean mc conn's check a majority of the students arrest ed in easton forfeited their bail in order to attend the meeting in dean mcconn's office at 10 o'clock this morning they were scheduled to appear in an easton court at 9:30 but only a few were present bail ranged from 7.50 for the majority who were charged with disorderly conduct to 12.50 for others in the case of those who were ar rested in bethlehem bail was plac ed at 12.50 for each student sus pension from the university also faces students other than the 56 al ready banned from the campus who are alleged to have taken part in what dean mcconn today called this disgraceful riot notices of the suspensions or dered this morning were sent by special delivery today to parents and guardians of the offenders dean issues statement the dean's statement follows in full it seems to me that the stu dents who participated in this dis graceful riot have no defense of any kind and that those that have been caught and punished are en titled to no sympathy in that they defied not only the civil authorities and the university discipline but also the nearly unanimous decision of their own student governing body president richards is deter mined that this sort of fracas shall be broken up and stopped and has stated that if after a fair trial this cannot be accomplished in any other way it will be done by ter minating the series of lehigh-la fayette games dean hauck has ex pressed himself as favoring this same drastic measure if necessary offenders caught in any further disturbances tonight or on satur day must expect the same penalty imposed on those caught last night or more severe ones if the occa sion seems to warrant it bethlehem pa friday november 24 1933 price five cents the lehigh university ban ner and challenged them to remove it the latter story corroborated in part a rumor that the men held in the attempted robbery of the sup ply bureau had hoped to force a lehigh-lafayette fight to cover continued on page four complete support of the 1926 ar cadia-k.r.t resolution against le high-lafayette hostilities and a restraint of any mass action against lafayette for its invasion of taylor dormitories was voted last night at an emergency meeting of arca dia in a lengthy discussion of the peace pact formulated in 1926 by arcadia and knights of the round table the lafayette senior-junior honorary society one faction of the meeting was of the opinion that la fayette had violated the resolution by invading the lehigh campus and taking the banner strung across taylor hall another group was of the opinion that the lafayette stu dent body was ignorant of the joint resolution it was pointed out that the k.r t yesterday made all efforts pos sible to avoid further trouble be tween the schools through print ing copies of the resolution and posting them on all lafayette bul letin boards one of the purposes of the meet ing was to make every living group acquainted with the resolution in order to discourage lehigh stu dents from breaking the gentle men's agreement made in 1926 possible termination of the le high-lafayette football series was hinted by officials of both schools today as a result of student rioting this week dean c m mcconn issued a statement to this effect shortly aft er he had suspended 56 lehigh stu dents who were arrested by eas ton and bethlehem police during rioting maneuvers early this morn ing the dean's statement indicates that president richards and dean arthur a hauck of lafayette con cur in favoring the termination of football rivalry in event distur bances should break out tonight or tomorrow in addition to the 56 men sus pended this morning other suspen sions are expected in the case of students who participated in the in vasion of the lafayette campus this morning the 56 suspensions made today are for a period of one week or un til after the thanksgiving holidays in addition the students have been placed on disciplinary probation for the balance of the academic year refuse bail by mcconn of the 56 men 29 were confined in the easton jail and 27 in bethle hem those jailed in this city were released at an early hour this morning on bail furnished by dean mcconn but many of the students arrested in easton were not re leased until late this morning be cause of the refusal of the easton authorities to accept dean mc conn's check a majority of the students arrest ed in easton forfeited their bail in order to attend the meeting in dean mcconn's office at 10 o'clock this morning they were scheduled to appear in an easton court at 9:30 but only a few were present bail ranged from 7.50 for the majority who were charged with disorderly conduct to 12.50 for others in the case of those who were ar rested in bethlehem bail was plac ed at 12.50 for each student sus pension from the university also faces students other than the 56 al ready banned from the campus who are alleged to have taken part in what dean mcconn today called this disgraceful riot notices of the suspensions or dered this morning were sent by special delivery today to parents and guardians of the offenders dean issues statement the dean's statement follows in full it seems to me that the stu dents who participated in this dis graceful riot have no defense of any kind and that those that have been caught and punished are en titled to no sympathy in that they defied not only the civil authorities and the university discipline but also the nearly unanimous decision of their own student governing body president richards is deter mined that this sort of fracas shall be broken up and stopped and has stated that if after a fair trial this cannot be accomplished in any other way it will be done by ter minating the series of lehigh-la fayette games dean hauck has ex pressed himself as favoring this same drastic measure if necessary offenders caught in any further disturbances tonight or on satur day must expect the same penalty imposed on those caught last night or more severe ones if the occa sion seems to warrant it bethlehem pa friday november 24 1933 price five cents the lehigh university
