the two institutions score 33-26 harper and lees play well for lehigh lingle excellent in foul shooting victory eliminates lafayette and ties lehigh with swarthmore for title the arts and science club has been fortunate in securing mr an dre tridon as the speaker for its january meeting which will be held in coppee hall on wednesday ev ening at 8 o'clock the club wish es to extend an invitation to all members of the faculty and to stu dents whether they be members of the club or not to attend this meet ing mr tridon who will speak on psycho-analysis is well known as an authority on this sub ject for the last fifteen years he has been engaged in psychological work specializing in psycho-analy sis he is the author of several books upon this subject which have had a wide circulation the gathering which mr tridon will address will be a joint meeting of the arts and science club and the members of the university ex tension courses these students hold their sessions in the evening and it was partly for their benefit that professor hughes obtained mr tridon as the speaker prior to the meeting the club will hold a short business session all mem bers are requested to be on hand promptly at 7 : 30 y hears dr lampe on experiences in orient the speaker at the college lec ture on last friday was mr james warwick price of philadelphia mr price has been delivering a se ries of talks under the auspices of the current events club he chose for his topic on friday the dis armament conference mr price said that although the conference was considered a fail ure by a great many people be cause it failed to bring about defi nite decisions in regards to certain vital questions that he considered it worth while in as much as such a conference was even held and that men of all nations would come together and discuss frankly such important matters among the questions which were not definite ly decided mr price placed the shantung question and those of the limitation of submarines and land armaments he praised the work accomplished on naval dis armament and on the distribution of the three yap cables giving one to u s one to holland and one to japan in conclusion mr price said that it was his opinion that some country other than the uni ted states should call an economic conference which would be able to decide many of the various difficul ties now existing between some of the nations wrestling candidates working out daily the fourth basketball game of the season will be played to-morrow night at 7:45 o'clock in taylor gym against franklin and mar shall the lancaster team seems to be more or less of a dark horse for although reported to be a strong team and a winning one it has re ceived very little notice in the sport ing pages and no individual player is spoken of in particular how ever no underestimate of their pos sible strength should be made be cause of this fact those who saw the muhlenberg game last saturday evening nd the preliminary game before it will re alize that every man worthy of a chance on the squad got a workout in one of the two events this means that so far the brown and white team which will meet perm and the navy has not been chosen therefore the importance of the team showing and individual work in the game to-morrow night can easily be seen the probable line up for the franklin and marshall game has not been announced and will not be until to-morrow even ing undoubtedly the team which starts to-morrow evening will be essentially the same one that start ed and finished in the muhlenberg contest harper's playing leaves little to be desired and it can be truthfully said that he successfully filled his position in his first real workout harper lees and lingle were the only men to play out the entire game last saturday although the two others who started also fin ished the game — coleman and hartung the two above factors then should make to-morrow evening's contest a doubly interesting one lehigh will meet a team of which little is known the contest being the initial one in any field between lehigh and franklin and marshall also the playing in this game will probably determine the line-up of the team that will go down to meet perm and the navy friday afternoon in drown hall two more matches in the inter fraternity bowling tournament were held as the tournament is now progressing a great deal more interest is manifest in the matches as shown by close scoring in the later matches the chi psi four nosed out the alpha chi rho team in a closely contested match by winning two out of three games the first game went to chi psi with little effort but in the second game the alpha chi rho bowlers came back and with excellent and consistent bowl ing headed their opponents by nine points the third and decisive game went to the chi psi team who although not bowling as well as in the first two games beat the alpha chi rhos by nineteen points the work of both teams was fairly con sistent and resulted in a victory for the former who won three straight games the first game went to the theta delts with a margin of seven points brumbaugh substituted for mitchell in the second game for theta delta chi this game show ed more consistent bowling and bet ter scoring the final game also a victory for theta delta chi was the best of the match wingate continued on page four inkwell notice e e.'s to hear talk on electricity aboard ship the lehigh soccer team had little trouble in defeating the old rivals from down the river in a 1 to 0 game on taylor field on saturday afternoon by the defeat of the lafayette eleven lehigh eliminated them from the running in the state league championship race and at the same time lehigh jumps into a tie with swarthmore for the pennant the game was lehigh's from be ginning to end and the score does not show in any way the true su periority of coach carpenter's men over the visitors the brown and white team kept the ball in their possession during the greater part of the game and repeated on slaughts on the enemy's goal kept the maroon dribblers too busy to inaugurate a consistent attack of their own the lehigh forward line played the best game of the season and only hard luck kept le high from scoring oftener time and again a vicious drive by mer cur fernandez or walters which looked like a sure goal just narrow ly missed the posts a muddy field hampered the players at the beginning of the game but the ground froze a bit and by the start of the second half was quite hard the university band was in the stands to enliven the occasion and a fairly large number of fans cheered on the par ticipants continued on page four lehigh started off with a rush and for the first five minutes ham mered relentlessly at lafayette's goal only to miss each time by a slight margin about the middle of the period lafayette staged one of their few rallies and carried the ball through lehigh's defense brewer came out of the goal to meet the attack but valdivia took a despair ing slant at the sphere which car ried little force but was sufficient to pass goal-keeper brewer and the ball rolled on toward the net with no one between the ball and the goal rodgers made a quick recov ery and just saved the day by kick ing the sphere out from behind the first half ended with the score 0 to 0 first college dance of year proves enjoyable the fourth of the series of social meetings of the inkwell club will be held thursday evening the members will gather at st peter's church at 7:45 o'clock for a short business session and will then visit grace church broad street near center where the club will be en tertained by the young ladies it is the first visit to grace church and promises to be an enjoyable event all lutheran students and their friends are cordially invited and urged to attend fully fifty men enjoyed dr wm e lampe's lecture at the y m c a meeting sunday evening in drown hall dr lampe gradua ted at princeton with the class of 96 and has been spending consid erable time in the last few years engaged in y m c a work in the orient his topic was a new outlook on life and in it he enu merated many of his experiences and observances of oriental life while teaching in japan during his entire talk he emphasized the fact that the chinese people have awakened to their possibilities and that it will be dangerous for any outside power to attempt to dictate to them in the future the won derful new medical college recent ly dedicated in pekin and the new militaristic attitude of the chinese government proves conclusively that a greater china has awakened dr lampe attributes this to the wonderful rise of christianity among the chinese in the last twenty years he also paid elo quent tribute to the japanese school system which he informed his hear ers is much superior to the present system in vogue now in the united states in concluding dr lampe assured his audience that a war with japan in the near future is impossible and that the so-called yellow peril talk now so ramp ant in the united states is entire ly erroneous according to his per sonal observations burr notice lehigh won an interesting bas ketball game from muhlenberg last saturday night the score being 33 to 26 lehigh led throughout and was never in danger the score at half time was 19 to 11 in favor of the home team muhlenberg was reported to have a strong team and expected to sur prise the brown and white but failed to show much strength dur ing the second half coach fisher sent in a number of substitutes and the visitors dropped in five goals from the floor the foul goal shooting of lingle was a feature of the game he dropped in 19 out of 26 tries the muhlenberg tossers made 12 good out of 16 coleman and lingle ex celled for lehigh while of the visi tors holstrum showed up well un til forced out of the game by per sonal fouls in this respect lehigh showed the effects of coach fish er's training as the entire team on ly made four personal fouls during the game the lehigh team appeared in new uniforms which were a decided improvement on the old ones the brown jerseys with a white stripe around the middle and white trou sers make a neat appearance while the men are improving there is still much to be done if the team is to make a good showing against the navy and perm who will be met shortly both teams played a five-man defense on sat urday and this tended to cut down the scoring but lehigh seemed to be lacking in team work the nu merous substitutions breaking up any effective combination neither lehigh-maryland club the regular monthly meeting of the lehigh-maryland club will be held thursday evening in drown hall at 7 : 30 o'clock all members should note that the day has been changed to thursday and should make a special effort to be present as the date for taking the club pic ture for the epitome will be de cided at this meeting with the time for the opening of the season rapidly approaching the varsity wrestling squad is gradu ally rounding into shape under the tutelage of coach billy sheridan after a long rest of two weeks dur ing the xmas holidays the men re turned last week and the hard gru elling work was resumed most of the men that had reported before the holidays were out during the week and appeared to be little the worse after the long rest the daily record sheet of the work of each man includes a list of about 125 names one-third of whom are candidates for the fresh man team who have reported for at least one practice some time dur ing the year the actual number of men however who are making a real bid for the varsity is much less than the record would indicate in the light-weight classes from 115 to 145 pounds competition is quite keen and there is little doubt in the mind of coach sheridan that the team will be well represented in these classes the real problem confronting him now is to find men for the heavy-weight classes ma terial for these berths is very scarce and practically no new men outside of last year's squad have reported of the old men coxe and tremaine loom as the best contenders for the 158-pound class quick in the 175-pound class and carlisle and moorehouse in the heavy-weight class the only new man for the heavy weight classes is roth whose sen sational work at center on the foot ball team this fall will long be re membered he is a candidate for the 175-pound class and the ability with which he has adapted himself to the game shows that he will be a strong contender for the varsity berth continued on page four the first college dance of the new year was held on saturday ev ening and although not so well at tended as some of the fall dances proved enjoyable to all present the music was furnished by the college syncopaters and was up to their usual standard of pep the dance was a little late in get ting under way due to the fact that many couples attended the basketball game refreshments consisting of cakes and punch were served the patronesses were mrs c l thornburg mrs j l beaver and mrs wright several other mem bers of the faculty and their wives were present there will be no regular january meeting of the electrical engineer ing society instead of this the society will meet with the engin eers club of the lehigh valley at drown hall thursday january 12 at 8:00 p m the meeting being conducted by the lehigh valley section of the a i e e the speaker of the evening will be mr maxwell day marine en gineer for the general electric co mr day will speak on electricity aboard ship covering both pro pulsion and the operation and main tenance of auxiliary apparatus all students will doubtless be in terested to know that the electrical engineering society and the me chanical and railroad societies will hold a debate some time in early spring the subject of the debate is resolved that the gradual electrification of trunk lines will be advantageous from a standpoint of economy maintenance and op eration the electrical society will take the affirmative and the mechanical and railroad societies the negative a new competition for positions on the editorial staff of the burr
