rutgers game pep rally will start from flagpole a pep meeting and rally in anticipation of the rutgers game will be held 4 o'clock friday afternoon oct 27 at the flag pole announces r n linda bury president of the lehigh union following the rally the stu dents will march down to the stadium behind the band and watch the team go through sig nal drill songs and cheers will be a part of the program club to give science show subjects for intercollegiate meets to be taken up candidates for the debating club will meet to discuss suitable topics for intercollegiate debate at 4:15 p m thursday oct 26 in room 466 packard laboratory clinton f miller president has announced topics to be considered are nazi germany socialized medi cine soviet recognition gov ernment operation of banks and the nra this year the club intends to use four or five teams to meet differ ent colleges on various subjects the proposition will be chosen by the candidates themselves more than 20 meets have been arranged throughout western and central pennsylvania and in new york city and philadelphia one team will make a southern tour for a week of debating sev eral debates will be broadcast the calif ornia suspension bridge project will be completed during the summer of 1936 the golden gate bridge was the subject on which e f ball assistant chief engineer for mc clintic-marshall company spoke at the lehigh valley section meeting of the american society of civil engineers last night in packard auditorium the mcclintic - marshall com pany recently obtained the contract to build this bridge which is now under construction and will be completed during the summer of 1936 mr ball stated the bridge said mr ball crosses golden gate and connects san francisco county with marin county it is to be one and three quarters miles long and it will have a center span of 4,200 feet which will be the longest single span in the world there will be two main cables on the bridge which will be composed of 80,000 miles of wire after the two towers have been raised each of which is to be 700 feet high the cables are to be laid two iso h.p engines are being used in the con struction of these towers and in raising the cables mr ball ex plained the wires which make up the cables are wound onto spools which are placed on barges and carried across the river one end of the wire is fed out as the barge crosses the river and finally both ends of the wire are made fast steel cables are then dropped and the foundation for the road bed is suspended by means of der ricks finally the cement naval power in american history was explained by prof l h gipson head of the department of history and govern ment during a radio broadcast over station wcba in allentown last night *¦ the broadcast was sponsored by the navy club of allentown to cel ebrate navy day besides professor gipson lieut-commander thomp - son u.s.n inspector of naval ma terial at the bethlehem steel com pany commander means u.s.n and tilghman moyer of the navy club spoke professor gipson spoke several times during the course of the broadcast each time pointing out some time in american history that the navy was responsible for the turn of events discusses revolution the significance of the british and french navies in the american revolution was explained first by professor gipson after comparing the strength of the two naval pow ers he pointed out how the french navy helped win the war in 1780 the french naval commander de grasse arrived with a powerful fleet and bottled up cornwallis army at yorktown this enabled the amer ican troops under washington and the french under rochambeau to bring the war to a conclusion washington realized that the war was won because of the temporary loss of british sea power profes sor gipson stated later in the program which was conducted as a round table discus sion professor gipson explained the significance of the american navy during the civil war not only did the navy blockade the south ern seaports but it caused the con federate army to be spread over a wide area this enabled the army of the north to defeat the confed erates lack of adequate shipbuild ing facilities and material in the south was a major cause of the souths defeat professor gipson said coming events students observe opera tions at bethlehem and allentown hospitals ning in packard auditorium a pioneer in air conditioning methods and equipment mr car rier chose this subject for the basis of his talk he spoke mainly on the future of air conditioning in indus try and public entertaining centers such as theaters after the main talk numerous questions were put to him all of which he answered a w heyman of allentown president of the lehigh chapter of the engineers club was in charge of the session he introduced the speaker and also took part in the discussion preceding the session in pack ard auditorium a dinner was held at the sun inn gerald thorp,ch.e 16 gave the customary over the coffee cups talk he spoke on the adaptation of chemical engineering equipment to process mr thorp was in the chemical warfare service during the war and at present is employed as sales manager for the bethlehem foundry and machine company founded air conditioning mr carrier is past president of the american society of refriger ating engineers and is president of the carrier engineering corpora tion he is called the father of the air conditioning branch of engin eering in the octagon the pub lication of the lehigh valley sec tion of the american naval power in american history was explained by prof l h gipson head of the department of history and govern ment during a radio broadcast over station wcba in allentown last night *¦ the broadcast was sponsored by the navy club of allentown to cel ebrate navy day besides professor gipson lieut-commander thomp - son u.s.n inspector of naval ma terial at the bethlehem steel com pany commander means u.s.n and tilghman moyer of the navy club spoke professor gipson spoke several times during the course of the broadcast each time pointing out some time in american history that the navy was responsible for the turn of events discusses revolution the significance of the british and french navies in the american revolution was explained first by professor gipson after comparing the strength of the two naval pow ers he pointed out how the french navy helped win the war in 1780 the french naval commander de grasse arrived with a powerful fleet and bottled up cornwallis army at yorktown this enabled the amer ican troops under washington and the french under rochambeau to bring the war to a conclusion washington realized that the war was won because of the temporary loss of british sea power profes sor gipson stated later in the program which was conducted as a round table discus sion professor gipson explained the significance of the american navy during the civil war not only did the navy blockade the south ern seaports but it caused the con federate army to be spread over a wide area this enabled the army of the north to defeat the confed erates lack of adequate shipbuild ing facilities and material in the south was a major cause of the souths defeat professor gipson said coming events students observe opera tions at bethlehem and allentown hospitals operations and their technique held the center of interest of the robert w hall pre-medical so ciety during the past week on tuesday oct 17 nine members visited the operating room of the general hospital in allentown and on friday oct 20 ten members visited the operating room of st luke's hospital in bethlehem the allentown group under the direction of dr r l schaeffer one of the chief surgeons of the hospital saw five operations per formed the bethlehem group under the supervision of wr w l estes jr one of the chief surgeons at st luke's hospital witnessed four operations there
