the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 113 no 47 tuesday april 25 2006 all the lehigh news first rain casts cloud over sundaze by samantha burns news writer just half of lower grace hall was filled for talib kweli's performance at university productions annual sundaze music festival in lower grace hall on saturday pete francis post junction and the working title also performed at the event the event was originally scheduled to be held at upper sayre field but up moved the event inside because of the weather there was predicted rain all week so we went ahead and changed locations to grace hall said up member colin mcleod 08 this changes the mood because people are used to the lawn and sun and here there's tighter security fran downey 08 said she was disappointed with the turnout this is embarrassing that there are so few people here she said there is one great concert day we have all year and no one's here attendance increased dur ing kweli and francis's per formances members of the audience said they were excited to see kweli perform talib has the gnarliest beats said erik sudnick a visitor to lehigh's campus he spits fire like no other i came all the way down from massachusetts to holler at him kweli energized the crowd by asking the audience to make some noise several times throughout his set kweli's dj also did a solo set for the crowd kweli came out for an encore after his set during the encore he pulled members of the crowd up on stage to break dance for the audience i was right up on the fence and the free style was amazing unbelievable dave langsam 07 said it was awesome for a school as small as lehigh to get someone as big as talib kweli audience members were also excited to see former dispatch member pete francis i'm sundaze festival per formed in lower grace hall saturday aopi theta chi top greek week by katie ginda news writer theta chi fraternity and alpha omicron pi sorority won greek week which ended with a dance competition friday night the winners were chosen based on the cumulative num ber of points each house received during the greek week competitions this week delta tau delta and sigma alpha mv fraternities tied for second place sigma phi epsilon fraternity placed third pi beta phi placed second for the sororities and gamma phi beta sorority took third greek week activities ranged from the beta carnival hosted by beta theta pi fraternity to delts dodgeball b&w photo by john conner opening day monday's opening day cere mony and greek olympics launched greek week fraternities and sororities com peted in tug-of-war relay races and for best banner the ceremony began with a banner competition where greek members came up with a sisters of alpha omicron pi sorority show off their togas and banner at greek week opening cer emonies monday aopi and theta chi fraternity won first place in the week-long competition faculty senate vote fails to pass by alison stravitz news writer the possibility of creating a faculty senate remains unclear after a vote for the senate failed to pass this month the idea of creating a faculty senate was discussed wednesday in a meeting of lehigh's chapter of the american association of university professors aaup executive board mem ber hannah stewart-gambino professor of political science said the proposed faculty senate would replace the current gover nance structure in which all fac ulty members make decisions what we have had in the past stewart-gambino said and still have because the faculty senate didn't pass is something called a committee of a whole which means that all of the members of the faculty meet and make decisions together stewart-gambino said the faculty senate would be in response to the inefficiencies of the current system the senate proposal came from a widespread feeling that we are no longer going to get more than a fraction of the over 400 faculty to attend faculty meetings stewart-gambino said many issues are complex and require informed discus sion so the senate designates a smaller number of people to represent and be accountable to the faculty the proposed senate would be composed of 28 faculty sena tors the senate would be divided into an executive com mittee college representatives standing committee representa tives and a faculty compensa tion committee right now not more than a few dozen professors routinely come to university faculty meet ings stewart-gambino said leaving a large number of fac ulty unrepresented she said she is happy the faculty really cares about work ing toward shared governance at lehigh smart well-intentioned peo ple can disagree but there is a genera inclination throughout the faculty to try to improve our system of governance stewart see sundaze
