kappa alpha fraternity and students for sustainable development raised 1,600 for the honduran water project in a more than a week see story page 3 new scholars program sends interns abroad by alison stravitz news writer two sophomores in the com puter science and business pro gram are taking part in the new pricewaterhousecoopers schol ars program through which participants receive scholarships to intern in budapest and prague this summer if all goes well the students will intern at pwc in new york city next summer and work at pwc after graduation said james hall the peter e bennett chair in business and economics the pwc scholars kyle shapiro 08 and michael ballanco ob each received 2,500 scholarships to help cover room and board expens es while interning abroad said steve goldblatt new york metro campus recruiter for pwc griffith welton a partner at pwc said the scholarship's goal is to allow students who could not afford the travel expenses to have this experi ence we wanted to give that greek week date auction prohibited by lauren rieders assistant news editor kappa sigma fraternity will not host its annual date auction during greek week because administrators think the event undermines the efforts of lehigh and the greek commu nity to promote sorority equity and diversity education dave brown 07 president of kappa sig said he is upset his house cannot host the event greek life coordinator ryan lovell e-mailed him to explain why the event will not be held date auctions are demeaning to women and conjure up images of slavery because the value of each woman is being auctioned according to research compiled by lovell and attached to his e-mail on campuses throughout the country the ideas of brother auctions date auctions etc have started to become taboo lovell said in the e-mail most national sororities and fraterni ties do not allow their members to participate in date auctions anymore they view them as a high liability lovell said the decision to eliminate the event was made after several discussions with assistant dean of students tim wilkinson the heck week chairs and their greek week chair committee in consultation with the office of fraternity and sorority affairs lovell said kappa sig may still host a date auction but not during greek week he said a similar situation arose with alpha omicron pi sorority's decision to pull its mr lehigh competition from greek week and host it separately though we do not support many of the ideas behind auc tions and encourage them to give serious consideration to these reservations they can host it if they wish lovell said it has just been decided that ifc and panhellenic do not believe this event fits within the fabric of the community and greek week in the e-mail lovell sent to brown he cited his research on date auctions and the percep tions behind them racial and gender insensitivity are among improv performance educates on gender roles sex by jackeline leon a two-person show tried to give students different perspectives on gender roles and dating news writer a two-person show called sex signals gave students different perspectives on gender roles and issues accompa nying dating and sex at a performance held in packard laboratory auditorium on monday as part of sexual assault awareness month sex signals travels to colleges nationwide trying to educate college students about sex in a humorous yet poignant way amber kelly and kyle terry gave the improvisation performance which included audience interaction kelly began by asking the crowd what does it mean to act like a lady they responded that ladies should be passive dainty pretty poised virgins terry asked the audience what it means to be a man today and he concluded beer sports sex this is the essence of man the two said stop signs had been affixed to all the seats so that if at any point someone felt uncomfortable they could hold it up dating scenes followed in which kelly and terry demonstrated how easy it can be for two people to get mixed signals resulting in misunderstandings the performance ended with a scene portraying a male rapist trying to defend himself kelly explained the transition from a humorous to seri ous tone during the show was a reflection of how quickly situations can change during a date additionally during a provocative scene some people in the audience had put up the stop
