the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 113 no 41 tuesday april 4 2006 all the lehigh news first clery tragedy 20 years later murder sparked battle against campus crime by patrick thornton editor in chief emeritus on april 5 1986josoph henry walked into stoughton house in lower centennials with a broken glass bottle in hand and saw a student lying asleep he imagined slashing the sleeping stu dent's throat but decided against it he made his way through three doors that were supposed to be locked instead each one was propped open the doors were meant to keep out dangerous people - like henry he entered the first unlocked room on the third floor jeanne clery's she had left her door unlocked because her room mate had lost her keys and was spending the night out photo courtesy of security on campus at 6 a.m jeanne awoke to find class mate henry robbing her to support his drug addiction a struggle ensued with henry beating raping and sodomizing jeanne with a broken bottle held to her head before he strangled her to death jeanne's murder shocked lehigh and changed campus security across the nation we all know that such crimes can happen said vice provost of student affairs john smeaton in an e-mail but none of us ever expected that lightning would strike here lack of security prior to jeanne's murder dorm doors were routinely propped open with pizza boxes and other objects on the night of jeanne's murder henry encountered locked doors to the first and second floor halls the door to the third floor was propped open by a student expecting a delivery doors could be propped open indefi nitely without campus security being noti fied today's doors sound a loud alarm after being open for a short period of time and campus security is notified lehigh had conducted a 10-year study about door propping and its impact on security a group of students hired by lehigh were supposed to go around each night and count how many doors were propped open and then close them in one two-year period around the time of the murder more than 3,100 incidents of the rape and murder of jeanne clery 20 years ago led to increased campus security how safe and secure is the campus today by lindsay mover news editor in the year followingjeanne clery's murder security workers locked and inspected all residence hall doors each night when they found a problem they called in donald o'shall of access control to fix it - no matter what hour of the morning it was o'shall had come to lehigh after teaching in new york where he had picked up a somewhat eccentric style one night o'shall responded to a call at b&w photo by jeff kauffman 3 a.m wearing cowboy boots blue jeans and a shirt with a cowboy yoke the smell of alcohol remained on his breath because he liked to have a beer to calm down in the evening although he was there to help keep students safe every flag should have gone up when a student saw him approaching the residence hall o'shall said i didn't look like i belonged at lehigh in any way shape or form he said but people would hold the door for me with two students read a plaque outside stoughton house honoring the memory of jeanne clery wednesday marks the 20th anniversary of clery's murder talib kweli to headline sundaze music festival by kathryn jacobson news writer hip-hop artist talib kweli has been confirmed to head line sundaze on april 22 kweli accepted university productions offer last week kweli began his career working with artist mos def in the rap group black star but has since released four solo albums kweli released his latest album right about now last november he performed in dave chappelle's 2006 movie block party and rapped on kanye west's album college dropout kweli was one of university productions original choices when the group began to search for a headliner in december said sarah foster 07 co-director of music this year we were actually lucky in that talib was on our original list of artists we were interested in foster said and in most other years we end up having to look outside of that list foster said the artist selection process is more compli cated than selecting any artist they want to perform realistically to stay within a budget we have to try and book bands that are already on tour and in our area with an open date on the day of sundaze foster said we can't afford to just fly in artist x to perform one date university productions co-director jennifer lennon 07 said the organization's members are happy to have kweli performing we're really excited to have him because he's going to bring a lot of energy to sundaze lennon said he's probably going to hit it big really soon so a lot of people are really excited that we're bringing him students said they are optimistic about kweli's perform ance chris bergen 08 said he has been listening to kweli's music for a long time i'm actually a big fan of talib bergen said i'm pumped he's coming to lehigh because i went to see him in new york city for a concert once but i had to leave early and never got to see him perform lidia monticola 08 said she looks forward to sundaze i think sundaze will be a lot of fun this year no matter who is there monticola said but i think he will put on a good show university productions is still looking for two other bands to open for kweli but their choices have yet to con firm kweli will join postjunction winner of the march 18 battle of the bands in performing at sundaze sundaze is scheduled for saturday april 22 from noon until 6 p.m see clery page 2 see safety page 3 mmm^m*m*mm*m]mm*ma^^m^m 3to8bbb|^^^^mfj students choose en s lacrosse special feature to study abroad defeats clery tragedy during the summer j 1 y bucknell 7-5 past and present
