the brown and white vol 113 no 40 lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 tuesday march 28 2006 all the lehigh news first broughal to be leveled rebuilt by katelyn noderer news writer broughal middle school will be completely rebuilt beginning in april 2007 with expected completion in april 2009 the school that sits on the corner of west packer and brodhead avenues will be knocked down once a new building built on the athletic fields directly to the north of the current building is com plete the area where the old building stands will be con verted into new athletic fields architecture furst won the competition to design the new middle school main goals of the new building include a science and technology theme maximum program flexibility and stu dent security at a board facil ities committee meeting on feb 6 robert furst president of architecture furst said there is also a conscious attempt not to identify with the gothic design of lehigh and be viewed as an exten sion of its campus last may the school board rejected lehigh's offer to buy the broughal building and the surrounding land for 1.9 mil lion lehigh also offered the bethlehem area school district building g on the mountaintop campus and the surrounding 10 acres the board decided to rebuild the school in the south side furst said he respects the community's desire to pre bb,w photo by nishika street president mayor urge south side investment by christie jephson news writer town-gown relations have never been better bethlehem mayor john callahan told stu dents and faculty last wednesday at lamberton hall the event was intended to promote town-gown relations and encourage students to pur sue entrepreneurial opportuni ties representatives from two local companies ecotech marine and hfield technologies also discussed their accomplish ments and ideas b&wphoto by bj shepard president gregory farrington callahan wayne barz of the ben franklin technology center curtis mac donald of hfield technologies and pat clasen and tim marks of ecotech marine spoke at the event farrington began the discus sion by explaining the develop ment of entrepreneurial oppor tunities at lehigh callahan spoke about how the opportunities at lehigh can continue to grow in the bethlehem community mayor john callahan president gregory farrington and local busi ness representatives discussed opportunities for entrepreneurs u.s needs more women in politics senator says by nicole nigro news writer the united states has not seen a female presidential candi date because its party structure is weak said pennsylvania state sen lisa boscola said at a talk last thursday there have to be good men and good women in the govern ment boscola said the discussion titled women in power a look at the global female leaders and prospects for a female u.s president was held in honor of women's history month and sponsored by the global union and the women's center along with hannah stewart gambino a political science pro fessor boscola examined the election of female presidents in other countries specifically the recent election of michelle bachelet in chile boscola and gambino com pared and contrasted these condi tions with the united states they discussed the reasons women are not dominant in poli tics in the united states and why they are needed gambino said the party struc ture in chile is unlike the united states with an electorate divided in thirds one-third left one-third center and one-third right small splinter parties are among these thirds in chile competition among these parties has created ideological positions and a strong history of party identification chile elected a female presi dent due to the sophistication of the chilean party system not the sophistication of the voters gambino said gambino said women are often regarded as wives and mothers gambino said howev er bachelet is impressing people bachelet has promised that one half of her appointments will be women gambino said she thinks bachelet's success may suf fer because of this decision boscola said a woman in poli tics cannot rely on a party to get elected she said bachelet worked hard in her first election giving up 26,000 of her own money and going door to door to get her name publicized she said bachelet won the pri mary because people saw her working hard once she gained the democratic nomination how ever money started pouring in at the time she was running against a republican female can didate i don't know if i would have won if that candidate was a male boscola said during boscola's senate run her competition was a male who had been in the house of representatives for 10 terms she said women often told her to wait her turn to her surprise she did worst among women polled between the ages of 18 and 35 i'm still battling gender issues boscola said you always feel like you're at a disadvan tage boscola said some disadvan tages include getting family sup port raising children and difficul ties raising money she said over time female politicians gain faith and confidence that they should be equal and she often deals with criticism or
