the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 113 no 33 tuesday february 21 2006 ah the lehigh news first two students face attacks off campus by lucy mele assistant news editor two students a robbery and an attempted robbery on separate occasions last week andrew esca 08 was picked up by police at 12:30 a.m on saturday after a neighborhood resident report ed seeing him walking on the 500 block of montciair avenue with multiple injuries including a cut on the back of his head a bloody nose and a bruise over his eye esca told police he was on his way home from a party on birkel avenue when he was pushed to the ground by three men the suspects proceeded to beat him and stole his wallet containing 220 a debit card and his lehigh identification card the morning call reported according to the morning call the neighbor told police that esca asked her not to report the assault because the injuries were inflicted by his friends when police asked esca whom he had been with earli er that night he refused to answer and said he couldn't remember the location of the party esca who police said was uncooperative and intoxicat ed had a blood alcohol con tent of 13 and was charged with underage drinking after esca refused ems treatment police took him to st luke's hospital-fountain hill to treat his injuries the morning call reported the attack followed the reported attempted robbery of kevin cho 07 on east packer avenue on wednesday night cho was approached by two men between 17 and 18 years old while walking down the street at 7:10 p.m police said the morning call reported one suspect was carrying a 12-inch metal pipe which he used to threaten the victim while the other suspect tried to grab his backpack he told police cho was not injured during the robbery thefts in taylor gym prompt stricter rules by david webster news writer following recent incidents of theft and unauthorized access to taylor gym a feb 10 press release announced the gym's employees and facility directors will become more stringent on entrance policies and recom mended increased caution the press release did not detail new security measures but rather better enforcement of the current check-in and screen ing policy the current procedure includes entering only through the front door and presenting a valid lehigh identification card to the programs offered online for years news writer an mba from lehigh is now available through the internet — last month the university joined other schools that make their mba programs available online mary gulick assistant director of recruitment said the admissions process is the same the high standards are the same the curriculum is identical and students have access to all of the on-campus resources that traditional students have the only difference is that the method of deliv ery is in a virtual environment gulick said gulick said although sometimes there is a nega tive stigma attached to online educational programs she thinks the program offers everything an on-cam pus course can provide although program development and providing quality education was difficult gulick said lehigh eventually succeeded we did not develop a new program gulick said we just migrated an already successful pro gram to an online format lehigh is no stranger to distance education the university has been offering online certificate pro grams for years enrollment for lehigh's online programs is open to anyone and the programs are not restricted to location gulick said taking the mba program online was the next logical step gulick said that although she doesn't think online programs will overtake traditional programs there is plenty of room for online growth an online school with an mba program helps older non-traditional students get an education from a good school gulick said such was the case for fotinos panagakos 86 who enrolled in the pro gram the advantages are that i can fit in much of the work around my work and home schedules panagakos said i travel quite a bit for my job so being able to log onto blackboard from anywhere and view classes is a big plus business major alexander zachariah 06 said graduate students aren't the sole beneficiaries of the online program zachariah said he thinks the program gives lehigh positive national exposure i think it allows the school to
