team four lehigh professors hold prominent positions members of the lehigh chemistry department played a large part in the proceedings of the lehigh val ley section of the american chem ical society held friday night at bailey hall lafayette college this meeting was the first at which four members of the chemis try department faculty officially as sumed their duties as officers of the organization these officers were dr h m ullmann head of the chemistry de partment councilor dr w w ewing associate professor of phy sical chemistry chairman dr t.h hazlehurst jr assistant professor of chemistry vice president and dr r d billinger assistant pro fessor of chemistry secretary-treas urer the main speaker was dr george maverick director of research of the standard oil company of new jersey who spoke on petroleum the petroleum calendar according to dr maverick may be divided into three eras the first that of kerosene which ended in 1915 the second that of gasoline which is just ending and the third that of chemically synthesized products from crude oil which chemical en gineers are just initiating schaeffer wolf and toffey have new positions nineteen men who have served for two semesters on the brown and white were elected to the board of that publication by the execu tive committee wednesday at the same meeting judson schaeffer arts 35 who was elected news editor last nity ball scheduled ; rules to be enforced participation in intra-mural football open to non-lettermen tentative plans for the fall house parties and the inter-fraternity ball were made by the interfraternity council at its meeting last night in drown hall fall houseparties were set for the week-end of nov 11 this is an open date for the varsity eleven but a freshman game with the lafay ette frosh is scheduled for the aft ernoon a tentative date for the interfra ternity ball between the first and second semesters was set as tues day jan 30 1934 the ball will be held under the same plan as last year that is on the subscription basis there will probably be an in crease in charges r e mcleod president of the council said the council voted to enforce all freshman regulations especially the hello rule mcleod urged all freshmen and sophomores to take an active part in the founder's day sports 5 dues payable the fraternity dues of 5 are pay able to the treasurer of the council not later than next sunday at the delta upsilon house this was de cided upon as final by the frater nity representatives interfraternity football schedules are out and contests are to be play a new set of rules parti cipation in these sports is open to all fraternity men not holding let ters for intercollegiate competition mcleod announced the strict adherence to the rush ing rules during freshman week by all social fraternities was highly commendable all rushees were well cared for and kept out of mischief mcleod said speaking for the coun cil the next meeting of the council will be held the second monday of november at which time definite plans for the interfraternity ball will be formulated needs appropriation for browsing room total registration is 1 308 faculty told at meet ing new advanced and special students haynes scholarship awarded to nelson y coxe m.e.'34 statistics showing a drop of only 39 in enrollment since last year were presented to the faculty in a meeting yesterday in the alumni memorial building the faculty ap proved the award of the henry s haines memorial scholarship in me chanical engineering to nelson y coxe m.e 34 total enrollment in the univer sity up to last friday figures indi cate was 1,308 several more stu dents have registered since then last year the enrollment was 1,347 since the last figures were an nounced in the brown and white 33 new men have entered statistics from the registrar's of fice show 121 less students regis tered for the first semester of the past school year than for the sem ester beginning in september 1931 this was the largest drop-off that lehigh has experienced freshmen number 333 the freshman class numbers 333 this semester as against 336 last year other comparisons show an increase of 22 in the total number of new students an increase of 22 in the number of students admitted with advanced standing and an in crease of seven in the number of special students by classes the numbers of stu dents are as follows seniors 260 juniors 278 sophomores 357 and freshmen 333 there are also 70 freshman irregulars repeating or entering with advanced standing and 10 special students registration ends the enrollment according to col leges is arts and science 225 bus iness administration 306 and en gineering 777 the registration period ends tomorrow dean mcconn will be the prin ciple speaker at the faculty educa tion club meeting monday at 4 p.m in the alumni memorial building his subject is the project of the progressive education association for improving the relationship be tween secondary whole-heart ed co-operation with the team is es sential lindabury said after members of cyanide junior honorary society under the direction of parker berg president distrib uted lehigh song sheets all those present trooped down behind the band to taylor stadium everybody lined up on both sides of the gateway to the gym and gave the gridders a big hand as they came out on the field while the teams rehearsed signals the student body sang two new songs director of athletics kellogg ex pressed his approval of the atten dance and the enthusiasm shown by the men in his opinion it was the rising star of a new spirit on this campus although the director is a newcomer at lehigh he firmly be lieves that he is quite well acquaint ed with lehigh men and the support to be expected from them a true sense lehigh valley section inspects manufacture of chocolate products approximately 500 persons in cluding ten lehigh professors at tended the annual inspection trip and picnic of the lehigh valley section of a i e e and the en gineer's club of the lehigh valley which was held jointly saturday sept 30 at the hershey chocolate corporation at hershey the members of the lehigh fac ulty who were present were profes sors s s seyfert j l beaver and t e butterfield associate profes sars m o fuller and allison butts assistant professors a r miller and n s hibshman and instruc tors knutson fisher and krauter the morning was spent in an in spection of the hershey factory one of the features of interest on the morning trip was a room of machines which stirred the cocoa syrup for 100 hours to produce the smooth chocolate another was the power house which contained the very latest type of electrical equipment with an output of 16,000 kilowatts which furnishes the power to run the huge mixing and grinding machines the last feature was a talking movie which followed the process of mak ing cholocates from the cocoa tree to the bar wrapped in tinfoil after lunch the visitors were free to choose their own activity op portunities were provided for bridge tennis golf and baseball however many preferred to visit the large new community center which mr hershey maintains for the use of his employees carothers views are included in insurance company advertisement the doctrine against inflation as stated by dr neil carothers head of the college of business adminis tration in an article printed in the new york herald-tribune on july 30 has been quoted in an adver tisement by the insurance company of north america the advertisement appears in the latest issue of the literary digest and is recommended by the com pany to all its policyholders and fellow citizens the article is en titled the purpose of inflation and sets forth in five statements rea sons why this country should not inflate its currency professor carothers will be one of the speakers at the annual new york herald-tribune women's con ference on current problems which is to be held oct 12 and 13 at the waldorf-astoria hotel in new york following are the five points of the doctrine against inflation as they appear in the literary digest first — the depression is coming to an end without inflation second — there is ample currency and credit now available without inflation to bring prices to a prosperity level third — no depression in history has been ended by inflation fourth — there are no grounds for be lieving that inflation can end a depression fifth — extensive inflation in any coun try has brought national misery it is time for plain speaking in flation is not a desperate remedy for a desperate situation on the contrary it is an arbitrary and un necessary interference with a recov ery well begun its purpose is not to end depression but to relieve cer tain groups of people of to cope with rivals like columbia and har vard however lehigh will meet columbia in new york saturday as for the proposed auditorium he said i believe it would be a good thing if some time in the fu ture lehigh could have a hall for wrestling matches basketball games and possibly lectures addresses and student meetings — a hall seating 3,500 persons the fourth plan the director of athletics will outline is to bring good football material to the le high teams of future years he is asking the aid of new york le high club members in making this possible the dinner is open to students of the university who wish to attend tickets cost 2.50 per plate new calendar in use coming events cyanide seeks duties lehigh union will sponsor annual social event the fall social season will begin tonight with the founder's day dance sponsored by lehigh union at drown memorial hall this is an annual affair and has always been well patronized the attendance has often been around 200 couples or more the dance will be informal and the frosh are especially invited to attend in order that they may ac quaint themselves with the social life on the campus dr and mrs beardslee and captain and mrs rice will be chaperons the brown and white collegians will furnish the music they played at several university social functions last year the dance will start promptly at 9:30 and will continue to 1 30 mustard definite faculty action is expected in the near future the operating costs last semester when the room was open 36 hours a week amounted to 155 this was covered by an appropriation made by arcadia when it appeared that the room would remain closed in definitely at present four attendants are on duty in the room which is open 32 hours a week it is open on weekdays from 10 to 12 in the morn ing and from 1 to 5 in the after noon saturdays it is open only in the morning from 10 to 12 the library is to be open on sundays from 2 until 10 p m for the time being if the use seems to warrant it this printed in the new york herald-tribune on july 30 has been quoted in an adver tisement by the insurance company of north america the advertisement appears in the latest issue of the literary digest and is recommended by the com pany to all its policyholders and fellow citizens the article is en titled the purpose of inflation and sets forth in five statements rea sons why this country should not inflate its currency professor carothers will be one of the speakers at the annual new york herald-tribune women's con ference on current problems which is to be held oct 12 and 13 at the waldorf-astoria hotel in new york following are the five points of the doctrine against inflation as they appear in the literary digest first — the depression is coming to an end without inflation second — there is ample currency and credit now available without inflation to bring prices to a prosperity level third — no depression in history has been ended by inflation fourth — there are no grounds for be lieving that inflation can end a depression fifth — extensive inflation in any coun try has brought national misery it is time for plain speaking in flation is not a desperate remedy for a desperate situation on the contrary it is an arbitrary and un necessary interference with a recov ery well begun its purpose is not to end depression but to relieve cer tain groups of people of their ob ligations and to permit the govern ment to spend money recklessly without balancing its budget . . . ," the advertisement concludes director to outline ath letic program tonight at alumni club dinner to strengthen the coaching staff lighten the football schedule for next year urge the construction of a large sports auditorium here and call for more football material from the student university who wish to attend tickets cost 2.50 per plate new calendar in use coming events cyanide seeks duties lehigh union will sponsor annual social event the fall social season will begin tonight with the founder's day dance sponsored by lehigh union at drown memorial hall this is an annual affair and has always been well patronized the attendance has often been around 200 couples or more the dance will be informal and the frosh are especially invited to attend in order that they may ac quaint themselves with the social life on the campus dr and mrs beardslee and captain and mrs rice will be chaperons the brown and white collegians will furnish the music they played at several university social functions last year the dance will start promptly at 9:30 and will continue to 1 30 mustard and cheese to meet for selection of fall play mustard and cheese will select the play for its first production of the season at its regular meeting to be held 4 o'clock thursday aft ernoon in drown president of the spiked shoe society librarian hopes university will provide funds the browsing room in the lin derman memorial library will be open all this semester librarian howard s leach hopes while the room is now open no action has been taken to maintain it or pro vide the funds for operation it is hoped that the funds will be provided by the university this semester mr leach said definite faculty action is expected in the near future the operating costs last semester when the room was open 36 hours a week amounted to 155 this was covered by an appropriation made by arcadia when it appeared that the room would remain closed in definitely at present four attendants are on duty in the room which is open 32 hours a week it is open on weekdays from 10 to 12 in the morn ing and from 1 to 5 in the after noon saturdays it is open only in the morning from 10 to 12 the library is to be open on sundays from 2 until 10 p m for the time being if the use seems to warrant it this three honorary degrees seven master's degrees 38 bachelor's de grees 35 prizes and 48 honors will be awarded at the exercises which will be preceded by the address the names of the three to receive honorary degrees will be withheld until tomorrow faculty to march preceding the address the facul ty and candidates for degrees will march in the traditional academic procession from the alumni mem
